Encre Noire, Vetyver by L'Occitane and Vetiver by Guerlain. I don't know what means cheap to you. Grey Vetiver is a great option but the price is above the afore mentioned ones.

Not sure where people are finding vettiveru for cheap these days.
I'd say check out guerlain l'eau boisee. Its a really uplifting vetiver imo.

Just to pile on the concensus-
    +2 for
    Encre Noir Sport
    L'Occitane Vetyver

    +1 for
    Vetiver Hombré
    Guerlain Homme L'eau Boise

The L'Occitane has an advantage of being easier to test (presuming they have shoppes in your region.)

I feel it's more wearable for a newcomer than ENS, but ENS is certainly worthy in it's own right, and I say this as a card-carrying Sycomore owner.

I should note that I'm on my fourth bottle of Guerlain Vetiver, but I've never been able to isolate the eponymous note — for my pedestrian nose, it's just too well blended (and that's a good thing).

    Happy hunting,
    /Acey

I'll express my impressions of the different vetivers with a color (for the ones I have smelled). Currently you can buy the following:

    Around $15/30:
    - Guerlain Vetiver - dark green with tobacco (my first vetiver, and still my favourite)
    - Guerlain Vetiver Extreme - dark green with incense
    - Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisee - fresh light green
    - Lalique Encre Noire - Earthy black, black, and black
    - Lalique Encre Noire a' l'Extreme - Grey
    - Lalique Encre Noire Sport - Fresh black with a drop of white
    - Carven Le Vetiver (white bottle with grey woody cap) - light green with florals , quite complex and a little old school
    - Franck Olivier Black Touch - Dracula's powdery (very) synthetic take on Encre Noire + Terre d'Hermes
    - Karl Lagerfeld Bois de Vetiver - rose/orange/hint of green

    Around $40
    - Givenchy Vetyver - classy mid-tone green/grey, hazelnut feeling. Drydown similar to Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire.
    - Mugler Cologne - soapy light green (actually, does not contain vetiver, but the floral/musky accord tricks the nose in an impression of vetiver, and the results is a (better clone similar to Creed Original Vetiver)
    - ELdO Fat Electrician (small 1oz bottle) - sweet brown with a hint of dark green (this one is 80% sweet creamy chestnuts supported by some vetiver, not the opposite)

    Around $60
    - L'Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu - smoky grey/green
    - Elie Saab Essence n.6 Vetiver - classy, perfectly tailored green
    - Hermes Terre d'Hermes - orange/green
    - Hermes Terre d'Hermes Eau Intense Vetiver - metallic green/grey

    Around $80
    - Etro Vetiver - earthy green/brown, with a roasted chestnut note, but not sweet like ELdO Fat Electrician
    - Montale Red Vetyver - metallic green/black
    - Hermes Terre d'Hermes Parfum - asphalt/orange/hint of green (more formal and better projecting version of the original)
    - Tom Ford Grey Vetiver - a sharper Guerlain Vetiver. A little overpriced -
    - Hermes Bel-Ami Vetiver - sharp green opening, brown red drydown
    - Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental - beautiful sparkling green/orange with a sweet background (not unlike Timbuktu)
    - D&G Velvet Vetiver - emerald green. Very luxurious.

    Currently around $130
    - Monsillage Pays Dogon - superb light green with orange/pink background
    - E.Zegna Haitian Vetiver - It's the high-quality version of Guerlain's Vetiver

Currently "I don't wanna know how much they cost"
    - Creed Original Vetiver - light airy green in the sun. Mugler Cologne is similar to this one, in "lower definition".
    - Roja Dove Vetiver Extrait - pure perfection, but overpriced
    - F.Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire - hay-ish, yellow/brown, not identical to, but shares strong similarities with Etro vetiver and Givenchy Vetiver
    - Le Labo Vetiver 46 - yellowish/brown, an hay-ish vetiver. A masterpiece and a hard pass at the same time because of its price.
    - Chanel Sycomore - the top is 80% Encre noire Sport, the heart is a 95% Encre Noire a' l'Extreme, the base is 80% Encre Noire a' l'Extreme +20% Lutens Vetiver Oriental. Great, but given the price tag, Encre Noire a' l'Extreme is a VERY good alternative.

My 2 cents, hope it helps!

For something new, with a a fresh vibe, but a completely new DNA, although akin to Guerlain Homme Boisee, I highly recommend checking out Bois de Vetiver by Lagerfeld. I realize this OP is a bit older, but I'm assuming most reading this now are vetiver fans, so if you haven't tried this, I would look into it while prices are still reasonable.

The combination of vetiver and mint make it refreshing and uplifting, while the vetiver is not too prominent in the opening, it becomes the main stay note in the dry down. The rose note adds something unique, although hard to detect I think. This is a wonderful, masterfully done fragrance that should be going for several hundred a bottle imo. Oh wait, maybe it was at one point, and it just flopped big time in sales. A great pick up!

I'll vote a +1 on Guerlain Vetiver: it was actually the bottle I reached for most often last year when it was sunny out.

It's got a prominent tobacco note in it that I really like even though it's not the best tobacco note out there.
Oddly, I didn't notice it at all for days (even weeks?) and now I notice it right away!

Grey Vetiver I sampled in a store and liked but didn't love, might need to go back and ask for a sample since so many people love it.

Thanks for posing the question, all of these helpful replies are useful for me too....
This is my Opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

There are at least two sides to vetiver, the leaf and the root.
Check out allbeauty, MoTW : the Carven is £14.95 (but the caps/sprayers can be faulty, treat carefully - I returned mine for a refund), Guerlain Vetiver (green and fresh) £35.95, Encre Noire (dark and rooty) under £25.00.

END Clothing carries CdG frags online. including Vettiveru 2 at £45 + delivery.

I still haven't found a vetiver fragrance that I love. I think it is that easy that I don't like vetiver.

I guess the two following is OK. The first is better than the second:
    Thierry Mugler - Mugler Cologne
    Creed - Original Vetiver

For "vetiver on a budget", I will be the hundredth person in this thread to recommend both Encre Noire and Guerlain Vetiver. Both are a steal at online discounters like FragranceX and FragranceNet, and each one offers a distinct take on vetiver. Encre Noire is vetiver covered in potting soil and smoke, but very sheer and modern in style. It wears like a veil of black gauze - dark, but not dense. Guerlain is green rather than black, and a more traditional take on vetiver. It has a soapy/fresh quality and a tobacco accord that puts it squarely in "old-school" territory, but in the most charming way. It smells like a proper men's fragrance, a carefully constructed blend - one from another era, certainly, but too crisp and sunny to write off as stuffy or dated.

Both scents are absolute must-sniffs, from an educational standpoint if no other. If you decide you're willing to expand your budget, I strongly recommend Tom Ford Grey Vetiver. Versatile, long-lasting, high-quality stuff. (Eau de toilette or eau de parfum, it doesn't matter, despite what some mouth-frothing Basenotes reviews might suggest.)

In your fragrant travels you may come across some scents that are even less expensive than the former two, stuff like Carven and Krizia Uomo and whatnot. To my nose, these don't really smell like proper vetiver - under a certain budget threshold, in my experience, "vetiver" fragrances start smelling like synthetic, plasticky pine or cedar with lashings of citrus. With vetiver, in my experience, you do have to spend a little above the bargain basement to get anything resembling the real stuff.
