Default List and rate the tobacco frags you've worn

Samba Skin-dirt cheap cherry tobacco. Surprisingly good for the price. 7
Pure Havane-excellent. Dry, but with a bit of fruitiness. 8.5
Tobacco Vanille-This seems a little polarizing, and though it's linear and simple to me, it's exquisite. 10
18.21 Man Made-high quality honeyed cigars. Great performance. 9.25
Insurrection II Wild-Probably the best value for under $30, and similar to PH. 8
My updated top ten, in no particular order:
    Bentley Intense
    Cosmair Polo Green
    Green Irish Tweed
    Calvin(original blue)
    L'Occitane Eau Des Baux
    Spicebomb/Lomani Body and Soul(tie)
    Hanae Mori HiM EDP
    Pure Havane
    Dunhill Icon
    Halston Man Amber

Will the rating be based on how good the fragrance is, or how good it is as a tobacco fragrance?

Too many I own to list. I'll just mention five I currently enjoy:

    Cuir Tabac by David Jourquain
    Tobacco by Franck Boclet
    Tabac Rouge by Phaedon
    Herod by Parfums De Marly
    Pure Havane by Thierry Mugler

Rating is tough because I like them all for different reasons.

    1. Moods by Krizia
    2. Vintage Gianfranco Ferre for Man
    3. Tobacco by Boclet
    4. Tabac Rouge by Phaedon
    5. Cigalia by Roger and Gallet

Honorable mention: Vintage Dolce and Gabbana PH

Edits: I mistakingly wrote down some leather frags that I just deleted... Oops!

Wild Card: Eau de Baux by L'Occitane (though not a true tobacco)

There are others, but this is my top 5 (for now ).

Monsillage Aviation Club is my favorite tobacco - 10/10

Tom Ford for Men is another one I highly rate - 9.5/10.

The rest of my tobaccos are Basenotes favourites. Not much point listing them.

I take back my question. I don't think rating based on how good a 'tobacco fragrance' makes a lot of sense, as in that case anything that approximates some version of a tobacco 'soliflore' would be the best.

These would be my ratings for some tobacco fragrances (there are some here that I do not think of as tobacco fragrances, but are frequently mentioned in the same category) -

    Feuilles des Tabac - 3/5
    Tobacco Rose - 2.5/5
    Back to Black - 2.5/5

    Eau des Baux - 3.5/5
    Pure Havane - 3.5/5
    Havana - 4.5/5

    Tabacco Toscano - 2.5/5
    Acqua di Cuba - 4/5
    Odori Tabacco - 4/5

    Blend 30 - 4.5/5
    Tabarome Millesime - 1.5/5
    Tobacco Vanille - 3/5
    Tobacco Oud - 2.5/5
    Burberry London - 3/5

    Chergui - 4.5/5
    Czech & Speake Cuba - 4/5
    Tabac Original - 3.5/5
    Fumerie Turque - 3.5/5

    Equipage - 4/5
    John Varvatos Vintage - 2.5/5
    D&G The One - 3/5
CK Shock for Him - 2.5/5
    Vermeil for Men - 4/5
    Cuir Cuba Intense - 3/5
    Volutes EdP - 3/5
    Versace Dreamer - 3.5/5
    Jasmin et Cigarette - 2.5/5
    Monsillage Aviation Club - 3/5
Tom Ford for Men - 2.5/5
Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme (Germany version) - 3/5
Guerlain Vetiver (ribbed EdT bottle) - 4/5
    Gucci Nobile - 4/5
    Davidoff - 4/5
Gucci Pour Homme II - 3/5
    Ralph Lauren Polo - 4/5
    Quorum - 3/5
Tim McGraw Southern Blend - 2/5
    Spicebomb - 2/5
Jaguar for Men (current) - 2.5/5
Bel Ami (previous version) - 4/5
    Jazz Club - 2.5/5
    Tea for Two - 2.5/5

I'm not saying all of these are 'tobacco' fragrances - to me, at least. But each one of these have been mentioned/suggested by members on Basenotes in various tobacco fragrance threads.

The ratings are reflective of how good/bad they are as fragrances, and not necessarily tobacco fragrances.

    Rating Scale: 3.5 & up - positive / 2.5, 3 - neutral / 2 and below - negative

Edit: Put in italics and underlined the ones I consider as tobacco fragrances of one style or the other.

Still no place to reasonably sample Tobacco by Boclet in the US I assume? Thats still one ive wanted to try for a long time...

Anyway im bad at tier lists to many i like but, TV, the one, herod, tobaccognac, 1821, b2b, ck shock, commandante, pure havane, one million prive, tea for two, tabac rogue, light my fire, enigma blah blah could go on and on really right? But those are all things that I would wear and enjoy to varying degrees

These two are tops for me:

Frapin - Speakeasy (I absolutely love it, the tobacco accord is the real deal with tobacco absolute and stars after 3 hours in)
Odori - Tabacco (If you asked an artist to create a tobacco fragrance without actual tobacco absolute this would be it. Leathery tobacco leaves & vanilla with soft fluffy jasmine petals.)

Middling tobacco fragrances worth a try:

Chopard - Oud Malaki (Tobacco accord created with a combination of dry spices. It is humid at some points, even a bit sweaty like Pasha)
Tom Ford - Tobacco Vanille (I am certain they reformulated this for the better. More of the clove tobacco less of the tooth rotting sweet vanilla and gooey fruits)
Michael Kors - Michael for Men (virile with its dried plums and apricots in a leather bowl with tobacco leaves stewed in warm urine. Its an ambery type of tobacco scent)

These two are NOT tobacco fragrances (contrary to mass belief):

Thierry Mugler - Pure Havane (Wearing this now, its a spicy vanilla, probably selling it soon, mediocre fragrance)
Parfums de Marly - Herod (More of a cinnamon dusted custard filled italian pastry with a cherry on top. I get ZERO tobacco)

I recommend going to a cigar shop and get a pouch of unflavored loose tobacco so you understand the high degree complexity the smell of tobacco has.
I have come to the conclusion that many of those commenting on tobacco fragrances have no idea what real tobacco smells like.
It doesnt smell like cherries and it doesnt smell like vanilla. Its ripe, its complex, spicy, aromatic, dark, strong, deep, flaky, dry, slightly sweet, a little urinous at times.

    Tabarome Millesime 3/5
    Tobaco Oud 2.5/5

Yes, the last two are, in fact, negative values.

I'm sure I've warn some more tobacco scents here and there, but it's usually not my thing. Not because of the note itself, but because of what comes with it.

    Hmm,

So far this year I've worn and own only two I rate them:
    1-Creed Royal Oud
    2-Bvlgari Man in Black

Both are great for different reasons. I have smelled, but never wore Tom Ford Tabacco Vanille. I don't need a whole lot of tobacco scents. Two seems more than enough for now and it would take something very unique and good to get me to think another tobacco'ish fragrance is worth putting in my collection. I still want to try Parums de Marly Herod.

I'm shocked nobody mentioned Royal Oud. Sure, there are many notes in it, but smells like tobacco is one of the main front notes to me. And I don't care if Creed or Fragrantica doesn't list tobacco as one of the notes. It smells like it big time to me. I even layer a tobacco deodorant with this because of the scent.

While john varvatos may not be a "tobacco" scent, I sure get tobacco every time I wear it, along with dates and vanilla. Regarding ratings, I think it's 5 out of 5. In addition to a lovely, mature scent that is versatile and sexy, I get great longevity--8+ hours, and I'm a light sprayer. However, projection may not be the greatest. For me, projection is no issue however.

Of the ones I have with prominent amount of tobacco in them, best to least best:

    Herod
    Versace Man
    Chergui
    Aramis Havana
    Pure Havane
    Tobacco Vanille
    Cigar by Remy Latour

I like all of them, but the longevity on Cigar is pitiful. Herod is quite beastly, Havana is best bang for buck and Versace Man is the real surprise when I tried it. Very nicely blended tobacco and saffron.

I've probably seen you say this about Pure Havane eight or nine times now on here. It was actually marketed as a cigar-evoking perfume, wasn't it? So whether or not there is an actually tobacco accord in it, it's all about the impression the fragrance gives to the wearer, surely?

...obviously you forget that tobacco is not 1 smell: there are various cigar (matted/unmatted) tobacco smells, various cigarette- and/or pipe tobacco smells: it depends on how the tobacco is processed. Then you have also the fresh plant as in Havana (Aramis). There is tobacco in Pure Havane as well as in Herod (ask Jacques Huclier and Olivier Pescheux!).

I dont need a note list or perfumer to tell me if tobacco is in a composition or not. I use my own nose.
The most basic form of tobacco and easiest to obtain is unscented loose tobacco. For those not familiar with the scent I recommend basing your tobacco experiences based on that and not perfume claims. You'll quickly see there are very few that are even close to attaining the level of complexity of actual tobacco regardless of its form.

Literal or impression, I think it falls woefully short.
Its ambery, spicy, vanilla with a bit of leather. Maybe that maraschino cherry thing at the top was supposed to be tobacco. I give up on it.

I've learned over the years that tobacco usually isn't my note, and I particularly have trouble with the big, sweet, heavy hitters like Tobacco Vanille and Back to Black.

I do enjoy a few that use the note with a lighter touch, though: Tabacco Toscano, Guerlain Vetiver, Diptyque Volutes.

In the next tier down, I'd place Chergui, The Dreamer, Pure Havane, and D&G Pour Homme (vintage).

On the subject of what is real tobacco and what not, I think this kind of thought process potentially takes the fun out of things. Even if pure havane and herod have no "real" tobacco note, its what they are suppose to evoke. Its the fun, its the story of it. I mean lets be honest have you guys ever read some of the ridiculous stuff that companies put out on their fragrances "le fragrance you imagine the tropical air, the lambrogini with laser guns, you are smoke le tobacco, zesty sea breeze as you are with your girl on a seductive night" blah blah... Just let it be fun, as long as its with in reason whats the problem?

I can tell you I wear fragrances all the time people stop me and tell me they think im wearing something different, is it that bad if a certain combo of smells make you liken it to something else? Heres one I wear randomly montales vanille absolute.. you know how many times, someone has ever told me they thought I smelled like vanilla when I wear that?? maybe ONCE.. ONCE ever. Almost everyone thinks it smells like chocolate(which I also think vanilla and woods makes me think of chocolate as well), hell I even have some people say they think that one smells like pipe tobacco as well.

Anyway, just saying just because a fragrance doesnt have a "real" note of that, is it that bad? especially considering its SUPPOSED to make you think that in the first place?

If a fragrance does not evoke "tobacco" is it a tobacco fragrance because the marketing insists it is?
Im not really getting your point here, fun or not, this hobby is a constant exercise in sensation and perception.
I've smelled many forms of dry, cured tobacco. Cigar, cigarette, hookah, chew, loose. Flavored and unflavored. I havent smelled the uncured wet, green leaf.
When I say a fragrance doesnt have tobacco, it means it doesnt evoke any of those I've smelled above. I've smelled plenty. Its one of my very favorite scents out there in the world.
Maybe I'm in the wrong on tobacco, anything is possible, but nothing gets my attention more than the smell of a freshly packed and newly lit pipe. Its magic to me.

    Chergui 7/10
    D&G Pour Homme (vintage) 7.5/10
Lanvin Avant Garde 8/10 (would get a 10/10 if it lasted longer/projected more)
Odori Tabacco 7/10 (would get an 8 or 9 out of 10 based on smell alone, but performance is horrible for me)

Really wanting to try 18.21 Man Made, may just blind buy it when funds become available again

Default Re: List and rate the tobacco frags you've worn

Is everyone picking only tobacco fragrances as single scents? I don't see anyone pick Bvlgari Man in Black which I think is a really great take on tobacco with a fresh, aldehyde-almost-mint back drop with tobacco and black pepper and a faint black tea note. I think it crushes Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille. Just my opinion. That's why I own Man In Black over a number of others I've smelled. I just think Bvlgari's MIB gets no love because it's easy to hate on a corporate name. I think it's underrated now after reading this thread.
