Default Perfume exhibit at Somerset House

Apologies if this has been posted before, but any Basenoters who may be hanging around London between June and September may be interested in this. It features ten perfumes that have "changed our perceptions of fragrance" in the last 20 years. One is Tauer's L'Air du Desert Marocain. I'd never heard of a couple of them. More info and booking here: https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/perfume

Recognized six of the scents in the selection.

Yes, someone did post about this event some time ago. I can't attend but I'm sure frequently travelling or UK-based BNers will report back.

I popped along this morning and came away mildly disappointed; a case of style over substance.
Room 1 contains a dozen or so bottles of classic perfumes under glass (from l'Origan to CK1), only 2 of which you can smell.
You're then invited to blind sniff 10 perfumes, each of which is presented in its own space with very nice visual props but inaudible audio. Of course, when you're smelling the various objects impregnated with the perfume you're only really getting the base notes.
The final room offers the chance to smell some Givaudan materials but the 'lab' is only staffed at certain times and even then, not necessarily by a perfumer.
As Kaern pointed out in another thread (sorry, couldn't locate it) there isn't much here for the average BNer.
    Shame.

    Shame.
That's a pity. The Guardian article made it sound much more intriguing than your visit proved to be. It also contained two social trend ideas I had not put together before, and on reflection seem quite sensible:

The millennial appetite for experience over possession; [....] The new wave of fragrances that are radical rather than pretty, which transport you to a hot roadside, or a cool church, or the morning after a campfire – are, quite literally, the essence of paying for an experience.

    ^ Ah, there ya go.
For an exhibition devoted to the olfactory I found the heavy emphasis on the visual odd. I've seen Emin's bed; I don't think I need to smell Sec Mag on a reproduction.
Very modern and very niche, too.
Would love to hear from someone who visited and felt it was a very positive experience.

Whoa, wait a minute -- you mean they were actually SELLING the perfumes that they used in the exhibit???

So this was a marketing opportunity for the currently available scents?

Yup; including numerous perfumes that weren't even featured in the exhibition!
