    Default Affinessence Sampling

I have received a sample pack from the fragrance house Affinessence. They have one line so far, with four fragrances, called the Notes de Fond (Base Notes) Collection:

    Santal-Basmati
    Vanilla-Benzoin
    Cedar-Iris
    Patchouli-Oud

Here's a picture from their website:

    Affinessence (1).jpg

The packaging is nice with 2-ml sprays. I'm happy to make this a sample pass if anyone is interested. Based on sampling the first one, which I've just put on, there's enough for three more samplers. Update: Three willing samplers have come forward.

I've started with Santal-Basmati, which is the one I'd seen recommended a couple times. The opening was disappointing, which I might have been better prepared for if I had absorbed the concept behind the line, that it's focussed exclusively on base notes.

To me, the opening was a typical, sweet, modern perfume smell. Within a few minutes, it settled into a sweet, woody fragrance with some complexity competing with the sweetness: promising development.

I used to love the smell of basmati rice, but it smells subtle compared to 10 years ago, either from me becoming accustomed to it, or the rice becoming blander, although it's still the only kind I buy. I have boiled some to go with this wearing. The bowl of rice is more complex than the perfume.

I doubt I would have ever made a connection between this perfume and rice. There is a touch of interesting complexity as the sweetness dissipates, but I would have guessed it came from the wood note itself. Inhaling in a spot where I applied the fragrance, I can imagine a creamy rice.

For how disappointing the opening was, it has settled into a surprisingly agreeable skin scent, although I'm settling on a rating of neutral.

Update: The notes list on the website includes cashmeran, which definitely matches: much more cashmeran than basmati.

Do you want to try them? If one or two others in North America are interested, we can have them come to you last.

    Update: We're booked.

I'm trying sample 2 of 4, Cedre-Iris (Cedar and Iris [Orris Root]).

The opening is the cedar note. I get an impression of dark roasted peanut butter which I also get form Olympic Orchids Woodcut. Also, one of the Amouage fragrances I've smelled in the shop has a similar wood note, to my nose.

By searching for it, I think I'm able to get an orris root note, fairly well buried under the roasted wood, but coming into its own more as the scent develops.

In the same way people who like cashmeran would likely appreciate Santal-Basmati, people who like this roasted wood note should like this one. I would like to put a name to this note, the ingredient name as its marketed to perfumers.

The heavy, somewhat sweet style is consistent with Santal-Basmati. I've enjoyed the early development of this one more, although Santal-Basmati became nice within an hour. I'm not excited about either, but I could imagine other people appreciating them.

Over time, the iris becomes the dominant note.

I'm a sample addict! These sound interesting, especially the Vanilla-Benzoin. I'd be interested in trying. By the way, I get notes of rice in Fils de Dieu du Riz et des Agrumes by Etat Libre d'Orange. I find it to be a fresh Spring scent that I enjoy occasionally.

David David - Good to see you. You're in. I'll ship to Epapsiou, he'll ship to you, and you can ship to N. Cal Fragrance Reviewer. I haven't tried the two you mention, although I'm an unrepentant sample addict, so it could be a matter of time.

I'm trying sample 3 of 4, Vanille-Benjoin (Vanilla-Benzoin). I don't really like it. I'll probably go with a thumbs down for this one. It's consistent with the house style, based on the first two: on the sweet, heavy side.

The opening was off-putting for me. I'm not smelling vanilla as much as something else, presumably benzoin. The harshness of the opening of this one, and the other two, dissipates with time, as the skin does what it can to work with them. It doesn't feel like much creative energy went into making these.

I would love to read some smelling notes from people who enjoy this line.

Update: After wearing it through a full day, it got better over time, and I gave it a neutral.

For memorable associations, I have the soft drinks Mr. Pibb and Dr. Pepper crossing my mind deep into the wearing of Vanille-Benjoin.

I had a few coherent thoughts on each one when I first got all four back in October of 2015. Let me see if I can dig them up from past threads or SOTD wearings.

I'm trying sample 4 of 4, Patchouli-Oud, and it's different from the other three. Instead of a thick, heavy, sweet, modern synthetic feel, this one smells more natural. The opening is even agreeable, interesting, and almost promising. After the first three, I was worried about the opening, so it's a big relief.

This reminds me of the smell of black tea. It seems to have more projection than the other three.

I'm encouraged that it breaks the mold from the rest of the line, and it's my favorite from the line, but I'm still giving it a neutral.

I liked Carner Barcelona D600 more than anything from Affinessence. Affinessence Santal-Basmati is similar to, and probably a little nicer than Rima XI. Affinessence Cedre-Iris and Affinessence Vanille-Benjoin are at about the same level as Carner Barcelona Rima XI, or close. Affinessence Patchouli-Oud is unique; you might like it. Nothing from Affinessence is offensive like Carner Barcelona Tardes.

I gave the four Affinessence fragrances neutrals. My order of preference is:

    1. Patchouli-Oud
    2. Santal-Basmati
    3. Cedre-Iris
    4. Vanille-Benjoin

    Santal-Basmati:
The sandalwood here is the same one used by almost all these days like Perris MC, Guerlain, and some more I came across during Manhattan Meetup.
There is no basmati accord here. Instead there is a toasted coconut smell.
A shame really as I was so looking forward to basmati.
I guess I will have to wait. In the meantime there is always the saffron biryani.
A gourmandy faux sandalwood. Not my thing.

I couldn't get a basmati smell either. The faux wood I smell is cashmeran.

    Cedar-Iris:
Get the lipstick Iris up top and some vanilla. Dry downs to something woody (perhaps this is what they mean by Cedar.)
Again not offensive but nothing here that would make me want to spray again

This concludes my tryst with this house. Thank you Bavard for making this possible.
Santal-Basmati was high in my to-sample list for the basmati note.
A shame that there was no basmati in this. I guess I will have to wait for real basmati inspired fragrance

The Vanilla-Benzoin had no Benzoin and Oud-Patch had no real oud.
On the whole the house is meh. Safe and boring fragrance.
Oud-Patch has promise and I won't mind FB but am not paying for it. I'd rather get Baruti Noud or Indigo.

The package will be on its way to Juxtapozbliss later this week.

I have a similar overall impression from the line, that's it's not too exciting. With Cedar-Iris, I smelled the wood note first, then iris.

I've tried the first three already. I went to the Basenotes pages to compare my scent notes to the claimed notes. Check out what I found.

    http://www.basenotes.net/ID26149441.html For Cedre-Iris
    http://www.basenotes.net/ID26151265.html For Vanille-Benjoin

Look at the reviewer mademoiselle_nicole. She said in both review the exact same thing: "The whole collection of affinescence is pricey but worth it. If you have a trained nose you will realise that the ingredients are high class fine quality." Just placed in a different part of the review.

Could be wrong...but that sounds a bit product placement to me.

I saw that. It's a tricky argument: "If you don't like this, your nose is broken," but it happens often enough, and I'm curious to see if her impressions will be substantiated by yours.
