Default POBox in US to receive shipments

Does anyone here use a US Post Office box or other package service to receive things? Looking for tips or recommendations.

Opening a PO box at a US post office is a big pain - lots of documents, not even sure it can be done if the residence is abroad.
I don't know about private companies-I assume it's going to be easier.
