Default Is MAC Velvet Teddy the best Tobacco Vanille killer?

I think it's safe to say that Tobacco Vanille is one of Tom Ford's most popular fall/winter fragrances. The big downfall is pricepoint, and perhaps some may be offput by the spiciness from the cloves. Phaedon's Tabac Rouge came out, and quickly got frag heads saying that it was better and cheaper than TV. I recently bought a bottle of Zegna Bourbon Vanilla, but that is really hard to find online and is not exactly a cheap fragrance in it's own right. I recently got a test strip whiff of MAC Velvet Teddy. I see it available online at several stores for roughly 60 dollars. Is this the one that finally puts Tom Ford's Tobacco Vanille to rest? I know some purists will always love TV and disregard any cheap attempts to replicate it, but I think it's certainly worth seeking out, either as a full bottle, or perhaps a decant if anybody decides to split it somewhere. Just saying... don't sleep on Velvet Teddy. If you want a nice sweet tobacco scent that is kinda like TV, especially in the drydown stage, this is probably even worth a blind purchase.

Whilst not the same, definitely not as thick but certainly sharing a similarity at a pocket money price you can't go wrong with Eau des Baux as its not a TV killer, heck it isn't even a TV attempted murderer as its an aggravated assault at best but those two or three licks its gets in are done quite well and is a decent scent on its own merits.

I smelled the MAC only once. It didn't think it was as woody as TV, but much lighter and smoother. Nice overall though, and as you say much cheaper. The MAC perfume lineup used to be shown in all MAC counters, but more recently it seems to have been made less prominent or even withdrawn from some. Wondering how long those perfume will stay in production.

I think Tabac Rouge did that a while ago...but that's just me. On a cheaper level I think Zara Warm and Addictive does a pretty good job at it too.

I haven't smelled this one though.

I agree. Tabac Rouge is as good as they come when smelling like Tobacco Vanille.

you mean whether MAC velvet teddy is one of the newest releases? Yes, it's one of the recent series of 6 or so perfumes with the name of best selling MAC lipsticks.

For me it definitely does. Have a 50ml decant of TV and MAC's Velvet Teddy. To my nose Tom Ford's is a tad bit spicier with a a teenie bit stronger projection in the beginning. Longevity seems better on Velvet Teddy. They are both owned by the same company, Estee Lauder so it's crazy to think they would use the same scent in both perfumes. The people I've told to spot the differences told me I'm making fun of them and that I've sprayed my left and right hand with the same scent.

Also noteworthy of trying is My Heroine, which resembles Tuscan Leather but with more incense and a greenish note. Smells like walking through forests after a storm and the trees were laid flat.

Nope, Tobacco Vanille (or at least the hype around it) died a natural death some time ago.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.

good point about the two being the same company. I had also noticed My heroine, which to my nose is sharper and has more berry than TL, but uses the same type of leather reconstruction.

Somebody will need to do more comparisons. For instance, Lady danger is a slightly fruity patch. What TF could that be?

I have a sample of TV and can't believe how flat is smells. It borders on boring. I've tried the MAC, but it didn't leave an impression. I agree that Eau des Baux is in the same territory and smells better. Tauerville's Vanilla Flash is also worth checking out as a TV alternative. I find it fantastic and is more deserving of the TV name.

TV is over hyped scent. Pretty linear and boring. I bought it blind based on the hype but that was a big mistake. Eau De Bavx is much better if you are comparing it with TV. Yet to try MAC though!

I've never tried the MAC fragrance, but I've found Franck Boclet's Tobacco to be a smoother, more wearable and much more versatile scent done in a similar vein as TV.

Actually it's something between the beige and the pink. There's a more pink one.

Yes, but unfortunately just as pricey.

I got to test this out today. Yes, it is definitely a Tobacco Vanille descendant, but this is no "poor man's" clone. This is a thoughtfully executed reinterpretation of the TV fragrance DNA.

If Tabac Rouge, which I find to be far superior to TV, took the scent DNA in a more "juicy shisha" direction, Velvet Teddy dials back the spiced "holiday" aspects and go in a more floral, aromatic direction.

So what you get in Velvet Teddy is a slightly looser, fresher take on Tobacco Vanille with the vanilla toned way down, some iris and a strong note of wild, dirty, natural honey. The thick, almost waxy "Christmas candle" vibes Tobacco Vanille gives off are thankfully absent here.

It's lovely, pungent, and smells "expensive," nothing lesser-than or compromised about it. It's still quite sweet, but the more natural, floral feel helps keep it from getting too cloying.

I absolutely need to get a bottle of this.

I agree, VT is fantastic, especially for the money. I picked up a bottle a few weeks at the Estee Lauder's Cosmetics outlet store based purely on reviews and price (75% off, so I figured out that I had little to lose even if it turns out too floral or feminine one me), and I enjoyed it so much that I went back to the store next day and picked up the remaining bottles - I have been seeing rumours that MAC/ELC is phasing out the shadescents fragrances. I find the mix of honey, tobacco and tonka quite intoxicating and mood-lifting, can't wait to wear it in cooler weather and during holiday season.

At the Estee Lauder outlet store, apparently. There's not one near me.

The prices I'm seeing online are more than fair, though. I could detect no "cut corners" in Velvet Teddy.

My Heroine sounds fascinating (I saw a Noir Anthracite comparison!). I wonder what Estee Lauder was thinking when they tried to smuggle in skanky "masculine" scents into their MAC line.

Tabac Rouge is the best in its class. Boclet Tobacco isn't *quite* as good (its composition isn't as nicely defined as Tabac Rouge), but it also smells genuinely luxurious in a way that Tobacco Vanille doesn't.

But, in quality, Velvet Teddy is still competing with the Phaedon and the Boclet, and that's the crazy thing. I need to spend more time with it, but I'm inclined to say that Velvet Teddy is better than the Boclet because it has better structure, though the differences in stylistic approach make it hard to compare them directly against one another.

ELC Cosmetic Company Store at Premium Outlets, same stores that have Tom Ford fragrances at 50% off on and Jo Malone fragrances at 35% off. The selection varies from store to store, but I picked up VT and Creme d'Nude there for $14.25 for a 50 ml bottle on clearance.
