    I look forward to reading your impressions.

    Could I ask what you think of DHI? Are you smelling a newer or older release?

    So, my DHI is a 2017 - I had been under the (mistaken) impression the trade was for a 2011, hence my willingness to let my Guerlain Encens Mythique go! But, in truth, it smells divine on my husband, and it's a keeper.

    If anyone would like to do a sample pass and would like some 2017 to compare with older batches, I can "donate" 5-10 ml

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Now on to the BIG SNIFF!!
    I was really excited when N.Cal contacted me to participate - some of these I have had in my collection, some I have wanted to sniff for a while, and others, I'd honestly never heard of!
    Today I tested two that were familiar in various formulas and decades, and I have owned both at times in their various formats and from several different decades. That was a mouthful, but it's late and I wanted to get started - please forgive grammatical nonsense!
    Chanel No 19 - So, I have owned nearly every version of this (EDT, EDP, Parfum, and even the Poudre) and my favorite is the pure Parfum. I have recently given my sister my 2018 bottle of No 19, as I really prefer the earliest versions (1970's) with he big chunky glass dauber. I prefer it as it presents with far more rose than the newer as well as a healthy (and gorgeous) dose of jasmine - and if I'm not mistaken, all of Chanel's Parfums/extraits are still produced in Grasse, whereas other formulations are often produced today in NYC. IFRA has since restricted the use of several components to the original, and while the current formulation is nothing to sneeze at, it is not as "complete" as its predecessor.
    Chanel Cuir de Russie - I sold my small bottle of this last summer; it was not because I no longer liked it, but it was because I was truly wanting the earlier version I had stupidly swapped with a lovely BN'er (you know who you are LOL!). I could not reconcile the newer and "brighter" facets with the older, more "cozy" desire I get from the very old stuff. I think our dear Camel gave a very good description, and it would be redundant to say too much more - but suffice to say, Chanel CdR VINTAGE is definitely a worthwhile hunt - it is so rich and cozy - like wearing a fur coat and drinking brandy in a forest of birch trees - knowing your beloved will be undressing you soon.
    I will try and review more than two samples tomorrow - again, thank you for allowing me to participate!
    Zephyr1973 you should try the original formulation. IMO it's the best - the iris and vanilla are the most potent.
    These are great reviews I'm actually looking for a vintage bottle of No 19 myself. I really enjoy the concentration from this pass as well as a 1970s EDT sample. Which is one more wearable to you?
    CDR perfume was really good. I'm no leather person but this stuff is quality. It was brought up that this kind of fragrance would be an excellent fragrance for a resurrection for Rouge Perfumery. Manny Cross should consider a vintage style leather based scent.
    If I were willing and able to spend whatever it cost, I'd find the earliest 70's version of No 19 PARFUM - it is just exquisite!
    Had a migraine today, so no sniffing...
    Both vials of Homage Red Box 2nd Ed. and Rose (TRO) were empty upon arrival, however I did sniff each vial, and have to say that:
    Rose (TRO) is delightful - and exactly like the Turkish Rose concrete I had, after I used org. grain alcohol to extract the gorgeous scent for wearing. If I had any left, I would gladly have sent some to the sample pass group - but I used it all or gave it to a really good friend. It does make me want to get more concrete to make the perfume again, though! Absolutely gorgeous!
    Homage red/2nd is really nice - bright, and green is mu initial impression. Without being able to wear it, I have no idea of how long it lasts or if it changes with the dry-down. But I really REALLY like it - and would love to have some to place on husband's neck...
    There is a TINY bit left - I'm trying to be as conservative as possible, and I may do those last I've heard about Tribute for so many years, and I am sooooo excited to have the opportunity to sample it!
    Turkish TRO was already empty when I received it. Both tributes (red and black) and Homage should have something left in them unless they leaked out. Those vials don't contain the attar oils really well I've noticed. Once the that inner white seal gets damage, the leakages begin to occur.
    There were several that are either terribly low in volume, or completely empty. It's ok, though - I'm just excited to be able to test some stuff I might not otherwise have the opportunity.
    GODET 1920's
    Chypre - A gorgeous leather - mossy, warm forest floor with less "wet" than some chypres. This is a forest in autumn, riding in a high-end leather saddle. There is a warmth in this scent that I don't recall in Coty's Chypre. I wouldn't mind if a bottle of this feel into my lap.
    Cuir De Russie - Iris and leather! So nice! This is not as creamy as I would have liked, but still, really pretty and very wearable! Again, if this showed up in my wardrobe, I would NOT be unhappy!
    Petit Fleure Bleue - well, I knew going in that this was all about the pretty blue-ish/purple-ish flower that has caused me so many migraines. That said, I chose not to induce another pounding in my brain, so I cannot comment on it, but if heliotrope pleases you, and doesn't cause you massive pain, I'm guessing it is lovely.
    OTHERS
    Coty Emeraude Parfum 1950's – Vanilla, very creamy, resinous, with a thread of bergamot running thru like a cool stream. Dry down makes me think of rice pudding! I admit to being very surprised – I had always considered this a “drugstore fragrance”. This vintage redeems my previous low opinion.
    LF Iris Gris – Since there is only a drop remaining, I chose to simply sniff this one – I consider myself a HUGE iris/orris fan, and while I will pay a pretty penny for an amazing iris, I don’t believe this is one for me. It is so sweet – too sweet. I feel a cavity coming on! I don’t get any iris/orris. Maybe I should have sampled on skin, but I’ll leave that drop for another to try.
    Parfum Satori Iris Homme – oooohhhh! Now THAT is some lovely iris/orris! Goodness! This is really nice – I believe I know what I’ll hunt next time I have the funds! I cannot keep my hand away! Easily unisex.
    Shiseido Nombre Noir – This is lovely – vetiver/rose combo with aldehydes! Good grief, this is beautiful – There is also some sandalwood and orris! This is a “happy” scent.
    Ormonde Jayne Black Gold – I have owned a bottle of this, so I chose not to take any of the tiny bit remaining (the sealer cap is actually IN the bottle, and the plumber’s tape was soaked – I’ll do my best to re-package) – I love this stuff. Until I had a large bottle of clary sage to use for aromatherapy, I did not realize how much was in BG! It is so wonderful, and clear – and then there is the OUD, the Sandalwood and the pink pepper! So rich – has some association for me of a Roja Dove sample I had, but cannot recall which one.
    Interji Adghal ( Adghal Majid Muzaffar Interji ) – Ok, so it’s a rose and oud composition (not sure if there is anything else). I like it, but I have a love/hate relationship with barnyard oud, and this is (so far) not feeling the “love” part. Does last, though!
    GUERLAIN
    Habit Rouge EDC - oooohhh! I have never tried the vintage of this - and it is so much different than the more recent releases! Rosy-lemon goodness on a well-kept leather saddle! How gorgeous! Dry-down reveals some vanilla, but not too sweet. Possibly some cedar wood. Really classy. Also unisex.
    Vol De Nuit Vintage - I had a vintage of this in the quadralobe, but this is really better - and sadly, I do not know if my bottle was older/newer than this one. A gorgeous galbanum BOMB! Very similar (in my brain) to vintage Balmain Vent Vert. Better than Chanel No. 19 (I think I just spike heresy!). The rose is the star - green and after a good rain. I'm smitten.
    I'm so glad you enjoyed this, Zephyr1973. I didn't test the Emeraude parfum in the box, because I have it, but I also love the contrast of the bergamot and the vanilla-infused base. I would add that all of the Coty vintages I have tried are outstanding. I think you have to go for pre-Pfizer era bottles to appreciate that Coty was marketing perfumes of exceptional quality in the first half of the 20th century, (I know folks say the Pfizer era bottles are still good but I have been somewhat disappointed in the ones I've tried.) Coty perfumes from this era (Emeraude, L'Origan, Paris, L'Aimant, Muguet de Bois...) measure up very well against vintage Guerlains, to which they are often compared, usually only to disparage Coty. I'll happily take vintage perfumes from both houses, thank you.
    Grayspoole, you're making me think we need a comprehensive thread on Coty in the vintage forum, as has been done for houses like Patou and Dior. I, for one, am almost totally ignorant about Coty.
    I see threads on individual scents, but nothing covering the house as a whole except these two, which don't go very deep:
    I'm glad you liked this one, Zephyr. It's fairly light on me. I can smell it most of a day, but it's almost too light to project to other people after an hour or so.
    My sympathies. We're having a hellacious pollen season here in South Carolina too, after that wet, wet spring. I hate to think how buggy the summer will be.
    And this pass is a LOT to get through.
    AMOUAGE
    Tribute Black Box - This has some serious smoke - tarry, sticky, and yet, still really nice! VERY masculine - I could not pull it off, but I would not mind my husband wearing it! The leather is rich, luxurious and deep - it's like a Chesterfield that has been used by smokers - and normally, I would detest cigarette smoke, but something about this works.
    Tribute Red Box 1 - Now THIS THIS is what I adore! Still a leather, but very few if any have smoked while sitting on this Chesterfield! And there is a gorgeous vase full of deep, red roses! This is sensual, and layered and OMG I am in love! There is something that lifts this scent and keep it from entering a heaviness only enjoyed in cold months - this is a year-round beauty!
    Gold Man-Khanjar - OH MY GOODNESS! This is better than Gold Woman! I am going to venture to guess that the current formula of Gold Man is very different - I smell roses - LOTS and even jasmine and some - is that ORRIS?? This is like a crystal chandelier - heavy, gorgeous and I cannot look away - this is bright and opulent - and slightly animalic, though I cannot discern whether it is civet, Hyrax, or ?? Still trying not to look at the notes, but I want to know what this is! Looked - and now wonder if the opulence and the animalic are both from the ambergris? I see Civet is there as well, but this seems too charming to be civet LOL!
    Dia Man-Khanjar - There is so little remaining in the Dia vial, I am going to simply try and review based on sniffing the vial: This is very light, and smells like there are flowers and maybe some citrus. I have to be honest, without placing it on my skin, I really cannot tell much - and I do not want to ruin the experience for the next person by using the rest. I think I detect something resinous, perhaps a light dose of Labdanum, but I could be wrong - I've been trying somethings out with the raw material and maybe it's just on my mind
    Lyric Man 2008-2010 - Sort perplexed - I have Lyric Woman and expected this to be an AMPED up version of that - however, it reminds me (please do not think I'm being silly) of Chanel No 19 - Green fresh roses! This really does not have the Lyric Woman DNA, and yet it is not bad - in fact, I really like it - but it is not at all what I would have thought - it's too green and "wet" to be an oriental, like Woman clearly is - and there is not a great deal of depth - not a bad thing, and yet, I'm still perplexed...why is this considered the masculine version of Lyric Woman? It seems like an entire different species!
    Epic Man 2008-2010 - This one JUMPS out of the gate and is seriously passionate about itself LOL! WHOA! I adore cumin, and this does NOT disappoint! Its rugged and manly - and honestly, I never thought I would type "rugged" in an Amouage review! LOL! Typically, I see these as elegant sorts of scents, but this one is all man - and strong! I get a bit of the smoke I got in Tribute Black Box - and I am really digging this. I hope someone will assure me that if I go in search of a bottle, I don't need to worry about later formulations - somehow, I am guessing anything I look for will have to be the earliest available. Sigh.
    ELIE SAAB
    Vetiver - oh, this is good! I have some Haitian Vetiver that smells very much like this - and I really REALLY love this soliflore! There is a slight warmth, but it still has such a refreshing scent, it would be perfect for hot days! Green and lovely - all vetiver lovers should get their noses on this one!
    Neroli - OMG! This is beautiful! This is so much more floral than TF's NP - and so more photo-realistic! I need to get a bottle of this NOW! I feel seriously HAPPY smelling this! It is sunshine in a bottle
    I really enjoyed reading your testing notes, Zephyr1973, and I see we share an enjoyment of Vol de Nuit, Emeraude, and Habit Rouge EDC and "perplexity" over Lyric Man.
    I think Kotori is up next...
    How was the longevity? On myself it was very short lived. It was nice for the first 15-20 minutes but then it became a skin scent shortly after.
    The attar oils were the most problematic if I recalled. Once the rubber seal gets deformed, the sample is all but likely to leak.
    I got about an hour out of it. It was pretty subtle; you’re right.
    Today I have Godet Cuir de Russie on one arm and a Qtip scraping from the inside of the empty Chanel Cuir de Russie vial on the other. The Godet reminds me of the soaps they had in Paris hotels about 20 years ago. Kind of a gummy scent with some strong resins. I imagine there may have been an aldehydic top that has faded.
    The Chanel is recognizable to me as itself. It’s so much softer and more cozy than the birchy current EDP. I can see why vintage hunters seek this out. It makes me want to try vintage Bois des Iles.
    I don't find the current edp particularly birchy, but it is true that the vial is softer and more animalic. Interestingly, the reconstruction of the parfum I smelled at the osmotheque has a definite kick of birch tar.
    That makes me wonder if the birch notes and the animalic notes decay at different rates.
    My only regrets in life are the people I haven't stood up for,
    and the perfumes I've thrown away.
    Good point about the decay. I would have assumed that birch tar stayed for a long time. But perhaps not. Or perhaps it's a matter of concentration, with the parfum having more birch tar.
    I think you are right, citrus and aldehydes are the first to go. But here we are talking about 50 year old perfumes, so plenty of time for other notes to disappear.
