Default are U.K. sizes a bit smaller than U.S. sizes?

I'm trying to see if I should get a size bigger if I'm getting a U.K. brand. I've gotten a jacket before from a U.K. brand that was a size large, which is my U.S. size but I'm not sure why it felt slightly tighter (for a jacket). It felt like a medium or maybe the cut was just off. Should I have gotten an XL instead? Has this ever happened to anyone here? I always thought U.K. and U.S. sizes are interchangeable.

I always assumed that there are no two brands with interchangeable sizes. Depending on a brand I'm usually between S and L. These are pretty much meaningless if one doesn't look at the size in inches or cm.

    Definitely

Usually 2 sizes smaller - uk 16 is a us 12, etc, according to sizeguide.net, although sometimes I think it's closer to uk 16 = us 14. And it really does depend on brand. Sizeguide and most online retailers have conversion charts so maybe check on the site for the brand you're buying.

I love going to the US as I get to imagine I've dropped two sizes on the plane!

I noticed Chinese cuts are a bit smaller than U.S. as well.

A UK jacket will almost certainly be smaller. European clothing is also, generally speaking, more tailored, which makes a difference too. U.K. And US sizes are not interchangeable. For women, it's four sizes (or 2 dress sizes, depending on how you count it) : so a US 6 is a UK 10, a US 4 is a UK 8 and so on. UK men's sizes are also smaller, but if you're looking at a standard S, M, L, XL scales, there are more variances between each size, and definitely between brands. Conversion charts will help, but your best bet is to find a sizing guide specific to the brand you're buying.

    Hope this helps!

Usually. But it will depend on the fit of the piece too. Some brands have slim fit, classic fit, s**t fit, and a number 4 classic fit is looser than a number 4 slim fit. It’s becoming harder to buy any piece online nowadays.
