Default When fragrance clashes with your work...

It is so stinking hot here in the North...hotter than it was all summer in fact. I teach teenagers for a living, and I want to smell decent in an environment without central air conditioning.
I thought I'd give Vetiver by Guerlain a try today...good for hot weather, more interesting than plain old citrus. As I was walking the halls, I picked up a suspicious whiff...did somebody smoke pot at lunch? I'd better investigate.
Nope, that was me...nice smoky vetiver, which would normally smell nice, but in the halls of a high school...well, it was sort of like Spicoli's locker was nearby. I hid for the rest of the day, so my colleagues wouldn't think I was taking the edge off, if you will.
Any other work / fragrance clashes out there?

Fragrances have never clashed with my work.

Guerlain's Vetiver, that most classic representation of masculine class? Times and references change, I guess...

For older people, pot would have been associated not with anything like this, but with the patchouli liberally flowing in the hippy era to cover the fumes. I bet if you wear patch, some of your older colleagues will make the inference.

Never had such problems myself. As far as I know, at least...

I don't think I've ever been uncomfortable from the work related scent I've chosen, because I'm always pretty careful about what I wear. But I've certainly felt the heat and been uneasy about things I've worn in other social settings (like being around family at holidays, etc.).

Most of the time, it wasn't the fragrance itself that I felt uncomfortable about, but that I simply sprayed too much on.

Kobe and L'Air du Desert Marocain radiating off me in warm temperatures have caused me to want to exit on several occasions.

This. And l'm careful not to wear anything overly animalic at work. Working in a hospital, l tend to stick with the more "clean" fragrances, & save the dirtier stuff for wearing at home.

I’ll wear anything at work. On occasion, my smokier incenses have caused my boss to emerge from his office sniffing the air trying to figure out what is burning.

Working mainly from a home office, non so far- however, if having had to work in a desk job, especially with a certain amount of colleagues and/or the current work-related events and settings that require little or no fragrance, possibly almost half of my wardrobe, especially on the more gourmand, powerhouse, leathery, nuclear projection side

Once I was wearing Sycomore EDT, sat down next to a colleague in a meeting who was a seconded police officer, and got a bit of a look. I did wonder if he thought (but it doesn't really smell like that).

Most of my fragrances clash with work, so I try sticking to citrusy or fresh scents away from home mostly.

Yup, the weather here is bonkers up north. Brutal.
I've been lucky and have not run into that. I'm "that guy always smells good" in the corner office.

Yep...I just get so bored, and normally Guerlain Vetiver is a safe bet. I'd say it was context, more than anything else.

Well, I guess my point was just that I have worn it before without any associations of the sort, so no, it's not the fragrance as it is. It was the fact that we are on alert for smoky herbal smells as a part of our job.

Anyway, I am a fan of Guerlain Vetiver, masculine or not. I'm not sure that it came through in my post. Also, I suspect that I would qualify as an older staff member

Smokey herbals are now legal in DC-obviously not in schools! One can find it in nutrition bars as well. These I guess you won't be able to detect by smell.

There was a thread some time ago on which perfume smells closest to said herbal - I don't know what the link was. Perhaps some more perfumes you could wear at school.

My workplace frowns on all scented personal products, so I am obliged to limit my fragrance use to my leisure time. The upside? I don't have to worry whether my Carnal Flower or Muscs Koublai Khan are going to bother anybody at work.
