Default Best clone of old school Drakkar Noir.

    Hello all.

I am a huge fan of Drakkar Noir. The bottle I currently have has seems to not have the "oomph" as when I used to wear it when I was younger.

I have read that the current DN has been "reformulated" and its potency and longevity have suffered.

I actually like the DN clone at Walmart called Classic Match, but its longevity isn't the best. Is this the best clone or are there better ones.

Other clones I have tried and liked are:

    Taxi
    Caesars Man

    Thanks.

+1 for Lomani PH. It's a sure bet given that you like DN, Caesar's Man and Taxi. Lomani is about $10 and it beats the Classic Match stuff both in quality of scent as well as performance. I wouldn't swear that it's quite as potent as older formulations of DN, but it's pretty solid.

I'm also constantly on the lookout for a good Drakkar Noir clone, if I can't find the vintage stuff.

Most of the super cheap stuff like Akthar Noir, Dark Kalm, and Dark Knight, Dark Noir, etc isn't worth even the $5 in my opinion. Akthar Noir turns to a strong plastic scent, that smells bad. "Dark Kalm" smells like hair spray. I had Classic Match but I remember it being cruder, and the Lemon Pledge scent lasting longer.

William's 'Lectric Shave smells very much like Drakkar Noir, but more watery. It's a pre-shave splash, but it smelled so nice I bought a bottle. The eventual dry down though doesn't smell pleasant at all.

I really get more enjoyment out of the $8 Classic Match Drakkar than seems fair. It's not a dead ringer - more patchouli and leather, less dihydromyrcenol, a bit of the stock rubbery Classic Match moss... but man it's great after a shower or shave.

OP, may I ask, how old is "old school" for you? I have not yet had a bottle of Drakkar Noir - of any vintage - that I would describe as having great performance. I went as far back as late 90's before more or less giving up.

Just got a bottle of Lomani Pour Homme.

I was impressed with the top notes, nice and fresh, the heart notes were like Drakkar Noir, maybe even better. There was a rich flavor to it. Then I noticed the base notes after the second or third hour. Smelled very similar to Preferred Stock at that point, but slightly less disagreeable.

Because of the dry down, I don't plan on wearing this anytime soon. But, I don't regret the purchase either. Out of all the clones I've mentioned previously, this one is easily the best.

Carthusia Uomo is best by far in my book. It’s not a replica but a an aquatic version that is deep and retains the old school smell

Yardley's English Blazer has some similarity to Drakkar Noir.
I've not been fond of either Lomani or Classic Match, though I did give my bottle of Classic Match Drakkar Noir to my nephews, who were extremely fond of it.

Also remembering this one as a fairly good, accurate and quite inexpensive option, while also seconding the Duc de Vervins range on the pricier side

This one is brilliant. I bought the 6ml roll on for £2 and it lasts all day. The smell is amazing is it dries down to a nice clean spicy scent.

I'll second that. Al Rehab is so very close to the original. Brutal.

So what makes Vintage Drakkar Noir different from the current stuff? Is it even harsher in the dry down? Just more sillage and longevity? More rich and complex?

But from what you're saying I'm going to give the Al Rehab a try. Is the oil better than the bottle they sell? Either way, they're both small, no?

I haven't tried the spray yet buy the oil is brilliant. Once you roll it on its quite a beast and it's not oily on the skin.

Agree, DdV has a bit more citrus kick to it and def reminiscent of Drakkar Noir; would be an excellent pick up. No regrets and already looking for back ups when on sale.
Today, I just picked up a current version of Ungaro III and to my nose kind of falls in between Drakkar's smoothness and DdV citrus.

Funny story with Drakkar Noir, I actually tricked my cousin with Classic Match. She thought it was Drakkar Noir for real. She smelt it on me when she came for my brother's wedding on rehearsal day. She knew the scent because that was her husband's long-time scent...

classic match is great stuff. I get a performance of about 4-5 hours from it, and no plastic smell. It smells great and for 8 bucks it's a huge winner.

Duc de Vervins' reviews are all over the place. "Mature," "fresher than DN," "drier than DN," etc.

This might be a blind buy down the road.

You can also try to look at ebay I see many on there, little pricey but worth it. I got my 100ml 80s formulation for £30 on auction as the seller had misspelled the name and had few bids only.

Vintage Drakkar Noir from the 80s is Amazing!. I have 3 versions one from the 80s and one from 90s and a current formulation. I find the current formulation to be a different fragrance to the 80s version.

The 80s version is so strong, its thicker, more leathery, more mossy and lasts far longer. It smells very soapy like a bar of white soap. Where as the current formulation smells like very synthetic soap, its fresher and more greener the 80s formulation.

The 90s version is like a cross between the 80s and current formulation. Its better then current but weaker then 80s formulation.

I do not find Dakar to be a exact clone of Drakkar Noir. It smells similar but Dakar is more leathery and has a tobacco like smell to it. It also seems to lack the Patchouli and citrus part of Drakkar Noir.
