Default If You Had to Have A Signature Scent, What Would It Be?

*Inspired by StylinLA's post earlier today...

This is a hypothetical post of course, kind of like the "Choose One For the Rest of Your Life" threads that pop up occasionally, but I want to really focus on what you think would make the best signature scent for you out of your wardrobe (so technically, you could still own others and wear them from time to time, but you'd need one to be you signature scent).

The scent you would be most identified by...

    What is it?

You’re asking everyone to open their kimono wide open Buysblind lol.

I will say that my signature fragrance is not necessary my favourite, because versatility is key.

I will go with Frederic Malle Monsieur. I have a strong preference for woody fragrances, and this one does patchouli in an elegant, formal, masculine way that communicates the message I want to send out about myself.

5 close contenders would by Sycomore, Creed Spice & Wood, Roja Dove Fetish, Bleu de Chanel EDP and Bottega Venetta Pour Homme.

    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.

Super easy for me = Terre d'Hermes EDT.

The stars align for me with this one:

    - My favorite scent (The actual smell)
    - Works magic on my skin as I can not say how many times I got told it smells even better on me.
    - It fits my personality and this is the one my close people associate me with no matter how many ones I try.
    - Bonus, it's one I enjoy no matter the season/weather which is my only criteria other than my mood.

Agreed, versatility is key here. So, I would have to bypass my Yatagan, Givenchy Gentleman, Or Black, Kouros, Shalimar, etc. and would go with...

Guerlain Vetiver. It’s rich, cooling, interesting, wears well year round, can be dressed up or down as needed...I can’t say enough about it as an all around scent. Timeless. Fairly easy pick for me, actually.

    Aqua Celestia

...but, I'd bet that most who know me don't pay enough attention to notice the difference between the soapy scents I've been wearing this year: Aqua Celestia, Aqua Universalis, Petit Matin, Castile, Royal Water, and to a lesser extent, Prada L'Homme. They're all in the same wheelhouse, but to me, they're different enough that I'm glad I have them all.

That being said, Aqua Celestia seems to be the one that gets complimented the most, so I'm guessing it's the one people notice the most, but I could be wrong. I really should wear it more often. It's such an upbeat scent, and on my skin, it lasts for ages.

EXACTLY. I wish more people understood what signature means. So many people think signature means favorite. It doesn't. Signature means something you wear (or do) so often that other people identify you by it... kind of like how the bank recognizes you by your written signature, and people remember Steve Jobs for his signature black turtleneck. That's why it makes perfect sense that something versatile would become a signature even if it's not a favorite.

I've never heard that expression before. It leaves an interesting visual...

I've also never smelled Monsieur (I don't think). Did it ever have a different name? Your description of it reminds me of Javanese Patchouli by Zegna. Have you smelled it? And what do yo think.

Spice and Wood was my choice. Not only is it tied for my favorite smell with Invasion Barbare, but I find it more versatile than IB, so it nudges it out of the top spot. Sycomore's an interesting choice. I could almost see wearing it as a signature more than wearing it as a once in a while thing. It seems like he kind of scent that would continue to grow on you as you wear it more often. I also would place Bleu in this group. Maybe if the thread was, "If You Had to Choose 15 Signature Scents," or 10 even, I might select Bleu. The thing that's good about Bleu is it kind of changes from one wear to the next--at least for me--so it keeps things interesting. I never know if I'm going to get fruity aquatic Bleu or woody-incense Bleu. I like both. It's a good scent.

I usually wear Bel Ami Vetiver twice a week, while most others are only likely to get that many wears in a month, so I guess BAV is it. I haven't been in this game long, though, so it's entirely possible this will change at some point.

Good post! I feel exactly the same about vintage Eau d'Hermes, 80's or older version. Other candidate would be Chanel Sycomore EdT.

Most important factor when answering this question was, if I ever get tired of a given fragrance. These two, never.

I have no idea, though suffice to say that my signature scent, if it exists, probably wouldn't be one of my favorites. Hence I don't have one

Annick Goutal's Eau de Monsieur. Preferably the vintage, but the newer version smells incredibly nice as well (albeit a bit different).

Endymion. I have been enjoying this loads the last couple of months, and I think it could make a great signature scent. It’s not overly formal or anything imho, and it is subtle enough to be worn in most encounters. It has a bit of that clean and soapy feel (shaving cream!) that you cannot go wrong with, and the coffee and incense makes it complex enough to keep things interesting over longer periods of time.

I crave it often, always feel great when I wear it, and it’s suitable for year round weather. I would be happy to be known by this scent.

I've often avoided commenting in threads like these, but given the (re)discoveries that I made this year, I am more or less settled on one. It's one that I wore a lot back in my uni/college days. Here it is:

Probably one on of the iris babies. DH, DHI, VUI or maybe Prada L'Homme. YSL La Nuit would also be in contention. There are lots of obscure scents that I like but could never imagine them as signatures.
