Default Fragrances you've changed your mind about...

Which fragrances have you ever completely changed your mind about? Either for the better or worse. As some would say, which fragrances have been a complete 180 for you?
Move on. It is just a chapter in the past, but don't close the book, just turn the page.

"It smells really good, it's not Aventus though."

Only one that I can recall - Programme Homme - back in the late 80s - for the better

Royal Mayfair. I didn't like my sample when it first came out but I revisited it several months later and I really started to enjoy it.

Better: Vetiver in general. Didn't care for the strong linear citrus in most vetivers.
Worse: The whole Dior Homme line. Don't feel like a Latte Macchiato and not even drink it. So why should I smell like one?

I used to love Chergui & Sartorial to the point where they were both top 10 fragrances for me. I still like them both but nowhere near as much as I did.

Chergui is too sweet. I enjoy when I wear but once a month is more than enough. There is something in Sartorial that annoys me.

    Better:

Oud Wood- I have a small bottle, wanting a big one! Used to think it was too chemical, Love it now!
Epic Man- Always loved the opening, best in the biz, but thought the dry down was dull and generic. I might have had a bad sample, cuz lately the samples I’ve used are really nice through the life of it.

Joop Homme after its milder, less sweet and less nuclear projection reformulation,

Guerlain Heritage and other classic Guerlains always admired for the quality of their ingredients and their classic style, yet still not having developed a truly keen and intense personal enjoyment and attachment to them until recently,

Prince Classic EDT, a very inexpensive German scent that took many years to personally rediscover beyond its layers of powerhouse strength and heaviness

Better: Mont Blanc Individuel / Creed Original Santal

Could not stand Individuel.. instant headache. Now, I get it and enjoy wearing it, so much so that I sprung for a bottle of Original Santal on the Black Friday sales!

Worse: Amen and most of the flankers.

There's something in the Amen DNA that I cannot stand anymore, even in the flankers. Pure Wood is a notable exception.

Grey Flannel and Tabac - both for the better. I hated Grey Flannel, I came to appreciate it, and was "turned off" by Tabac the first time I smelled it, the "oh yuck, NO" sort of response, now I love it.

I can't think of any I once loved but now hate.

Green Irish Tweed turned for the worse. At first, I wore it all day, any day, because it seemed like the perfect versatile, masculine, classy, sexy fragrance. As time went on, it made me uncomfortable to wear. I pictured the man wearing it to be someone I couldn't take seriously, like a putz-y used car salesman with an ill-fitting plaid sport jacket and a bad hair dye job or an obvious toupee. Don't ask me why. These things happen.

Better: Dior Homme and Homme Intense. When I first tried them I was getting way too much "lipstick" in them, but after shelving them for a few months and trying again, they revealed themselves to be both quite nice and enjoyable to wear. I take back all silly comments I made about them here on BN.

Worse: Way too many to list. And way too many "highly rated" fragrances I bought blindly, only to discover they were totally overrated duds.

    For the better:

    1725
    Castile
    Rose 31
    Aqua Universalis

Those are currently four of my all time top 5, and I vetoed every single one of them on first try. In fact, I think I sampled them all at least twice before they clicked with me... but man oh man, once they clicked, they went on to become my all time favorite scents.

For the worse: Too many to list. The more I've explored different fragrances and houses, the less I'm willing to tolerate harshness, especially in a scent's base.
Current Favorites (in no particular order)
    Castile
    Royal Oud
    Rose 31

    Petit Matin
    Lumiere Noire
    Bergamote Soleil

Better: Guerlain Habit Rouge - the first time I smelled it I thought this can't be Sean Connery's signature fragrance, it smells like Grandma's bathroom. Tried it again years later purely out of curiosity, and couldn't believe how much I liked it.

Worse: Many, but the one that stands out the most in my memory is Bond Bleeker St. When it first came out I thought it was so creative. After about 8 wearings I thought it smelled like cheap air freshener and sold my bottle to a coworker. It still seams cheap smelling to me even today.

For the better: (but already years ago)
    - Terre d'Hermes
    - Guerlain Vetiver
    - Kouros

    - Joop Nightflight
    - Ambre Sultan
    - Declaration

    (sold them all; no regrets)
My Top '11' : (In no particular order)

    - Dolce & Gabbana: Pour Homme (vtg)
    - Paco Rabanne: pour homme (vtg)

    - Davidoff: Leather Blend Edp
    - Rasasi: Al Wisam Day
    - Dior: Fahrenheit (vtg)

    For the better:

    - Guerlain Shalimar: Blind bought the vintage EdT for laughs and giggles, turns out to be borderline S&M on my skin - vanilla, rubber, leather. I like it!
    - Bois des Iles: Tried the EdT and EdP, didn't like it. Tried the Parfum, fell in love, bought it.

    For the worse:

    - Mont Blanc Legend: I liked the opening in the past, but something in the drydown really bugged me. Smells great on my boss, though,
    - Boss Bottled Night: Thought I would like it, but there's something rather bland about it,
    - Dior Feve Delicieuse: Sprang for a decant and thought it would be the the bee's knees, but just enforced my opinion that Santal Majuscule is much more superior,
    - Bond No.9 Chinatown: Works only 50% of the time on me - it often smells like a Lush store on me,
    - Serge Lutens Chergui: I get a lot of complements on this one, but I've got the feeling that it has a 50% chance of turning sour on me,
    - Serge Lutens Fleurs d'Oranger: I have a sample had more cumin, and love it. Bought a full bottle, and get barely any cumin. I'm still using it, but pining after what I sampled originally. This is the one and only time where I have had a bad experience with a reformulation
    - Serge Lutens Fille de Berlin: Don't get me wrong - it's a great rose fragrance, but there are ones out there that suit my taste more (JhaG Lady Vengeance, Rose 31, PoaL).

Better -Flux de Fleur Thought it was a weird sweet mess at first. The complexity and quality of ingredients eluded me the first 2 wearings. Now it's really enjoyable to wear especially after the first 10 minutes.
5 o'clock de gingembre Always liked it some, but lately I've realized how utterly charming and unique it is.
Worse-Oud Wood, Sartorial, Rose 31 All 3 seemed solid but tired of quickly.

I have a couple but I know for sure Dunhill icon is definitely one of them.... When I first smelled it..... I was SOLD..... Then when I finally got a bottle and wearing... I notice the performance is terribly weak... Some reason the tester I tried was stronger... Hmmmm

Default Re: Fragrances you've changed your mind about...

Was quite close to changing my mind about the regular Kouros today, not perceiving it as that sweaty nor "unclean" civet today and hardly more unpleasant, nor harsh nor overdone than in other civet fragrances from the same decade i enjoy like Lapidus PH, Zino, Furyo and also quite nicely counterbalanced by a soapy hint.

However a more strongly unpleasant (at least by personal standards) side effect was sensing an oddly chemical, solvent-like, quite burnt-smoky note during its base and its final development.

Wow, you actually liked TDH then stopped liking it? For most it's the opposite I think. Interesting.
