Default GUERLAIN L'Homme Ideal: What flanker for 2018?

    Happy 2018 B'Ners

I have been enjoying Guerlain's decision to play in the modern man jus (plastics, metals and flowers) as started by YSL with L'Homme + a dozen flankers since 2006. Dior had its way with the Dior Homme line and Givenchy tried with Givenchy Gentlemen. Hugo Boss breathed new life into Bottled and present several flankers as well.

Guerlain was a decade late to the game but I find myself enjoying their take more than the rest. Simple, to the point and solid Guerlain quality; what's not to like? It has also launched a flanker a year since, I doubt trying to play catch up though; and what has been added is just as nice as the original.

That begs the questions: will Guerlain add a flanker this year and what will it be?

Reply with your suggestion or second someone else's.

    Here is mine:

    2014 L'Homme Ideal EdT
    2015 L'Homme Ideal Cologne
    2016 L'Homme Ideal EdP
    2017 L'Homme Ideal Sport
    2018 L'Homme Ideal Oud

My guess is that they won't add a flanker in 2018 - just a feeling.

Agree with this. But if they do.. I’d like to see L’Homme Ideal Aromatique.

Might be right. Guerlain Homme stopped at 3 flankers. But if forced to hazard a guess, I'd go with Noir.

Taking a wild, random and totally unsubstantiated guess that something woody/boisee or something tobacco dominated and/or boozy could also be options considered, although not seeing this fragrance (for now) going the way of the AMen flankers which did essentially provide a little bit of everything, for almost any customer category/type

I think that with 4 choices this line is complete. But to make a choice i agree that it will probably an extreme or intense version of the original or a flanker of a flanker.

I agree, considering Sport hasn't even reached US markets yet.

I have to be honest, I'm not a big fan of the L'Homme Ideal flankers. The EDP smells great but its performance is poor, the Cologne is kind of nice, but it's kind of annoying too and wears thin after a while, and Sport is about generic as you can get before it begins to feel like one big, ironic joke. That's just my personal take on them. I thought the Homme Line was cut short early. I think the original is a great pillar to start with, and I enjoyed every one of the flankers which maintained the original theme but also built upon it in a really creative, enjoyable way. L'Eau Boisee, Homme Intense, and Homme L'Eau (my favorite of all) all smell really good and create a diverse range. Even their little Pinafarina release smelled different, and good. But they moved pretty quickly over to L'Homme Ideal, and while I like L'Homme Ideal a lot, the rest just don't build upon it very well, imo.

If they release another flanker, which I actually don't think they are going to do at any point, this year or later, I'd like to see an "Intense" where they bring some chocolate and maybe a smooth oud note into the base perhaps with some hazelnut. Give it the roundness and richness of the EDP with the projection of the EDT.

    I hope they don't.

I don't see them bringing an 'intense' or 'extreme' version out, as they already have- the edp version.
As we've seen recently in the new bottle changeovers, they've eliminated 'extreme & intense' namings and just refer to them as EDP(ala the L'instant Guerlain extreme lost the 'extreme' designation and now just goes by 'edp').

A bit harsh, but I think they jumped the shark with the Sport version. A 'sport gourmand'? Imho... that's just a gross concept.
While I don't necessarily hate the edt or edp, the criticism Wasser got for this line (particularly from respected critics & reviewers) was overwhelming.
Not so much for the scent itself, but more towards how synthetic & cheap they smell. (Criticisms for being 'generic' were frequent too, but I personally don't think it's warranted. Its actually pretty original imo, and the only thing generic about it, is that it leans on the side of being too sweet, like so many 'masculine' designer fragrances now).

In any event- I hope this line has been put out to the pasture, and Wasser/Guerlain is working on something new- with the Ideal criticisms in the forefront of his mind, focused on something smelling more natural & high quality(and hopefully not another redundant sweet/gourmand men's fragrance).
LVMH & budgets be damned, bring 'quality' back to the Guerlain name. If it means prices increase, so be it. I mean... we're in an age where stuff like Parfums De Marly retails at $300 a bottle.

I agree, but we never get to see what would have happened as the real problem with Sport is that it doesn't resemble the original at all. It's like they had the same way of thinking as you (Gourmand sport = Gross), so instead of even attempting one they just came up with the most generic "blue" smell possible and slapped the L'Homme Ideal monicker on it. I would have been more satisfied with a 'gross' gourmand sports fragrance, even if it failed miserably, than what they released, which to me bears no resemblance at all to the line and still fails miserably just because it's so redundant in and of itself. A very extemporaneous, superfluous release in my opinion which should have been given more thought and time before coming out. I trusted Wasser on this one! I went against the grain and bought it and said to hell with the critics they probably don't know what they're talking about anyway, Thierry's gonna come through for me on this one, but alas...they were right. What a dud.

I bought it when it was released but never opened it. This post has me curious. I'll maybe open it tomorrow. So basically.. it isn't like the rest of the line? Just a generic blue scent?

That's my take on it. I honestly don't get the original at all. I looked for it too (I was hoping it was there!). A few months ago I bought a really generic scent called Perry Ellis Aqua. It's exactly what I expected it to be--the epitome of the quintessential "blue" aquatic sports scent from the past decade or so--not good, but not horrible either--almost interesting in how completely and utterly generic it is. It really epitomizes the aquatic "blue" trend that was once so popular. Anyway, I get the same effect from L'Homme Ideal Sport, and while I haven't compared them against each other directly, I really couldn't tell you if the Guerlain is any better than the Perry Ellis. I'll have to test them out together.

I would hope the next L’Homme Ideal flanker combines the cherry/almond note with patchouli. And not A*Men style “chocolatey” patch, more like you find in Heritage.

So effectively a masculine take on Le Baiser du Dragon.

I think the EdP fills this space though YSL would disagree with you: EdPs and Intense versions of L'Homme exist side by side

Interesting...the cologne version could/should have done this maybe? Or pull a Dior that has both Eau and Cologne (and 3 versions of sport) for DH.

Black maybe...Noir more inline with Guerlain nomenclature. But black is dead no? 2006 was the year...lots of black that year.

I personally enjoy all of the flankers. The do take a little while to get used to which is hard to be patient in today's world of aromachem bombs. Nostril cleansing anyone?? The sport flanker specifically leaves a trail that I find fantastic, and I enjoy how the 'blue' notes live side by side with the rest of the composition.

Truth is Guerlain no longer enjoys that rarefied space...no company does anymore. Too much competition from niche, wanna-be niche, artisan, flanker madness and then the oud invasion. Guerlain Homme came and went and no one talks about it, whereas Dior and YSL among others are still laughing all the way to the bank.

What is Guerlain to do? Wasser must be under a lot of pressure. I still like his style. Oh and the sport version was not a solo-Wasser creation BTW.

I can't say my opinion on Sport is solidified yet either though. I've worn it once after getting it so my comments may be unfair. I'll give it a few more wearings, and maybe I'll pick up on some of the stuff you like so much in its trail.

Interesting note breakdown, not very Guerlain barring the almond and vanilla. Looking forward to trying this one out!
