Default Yes or No ? Classic fragrances under $30.00 My (possible) list :

    Hi all,

Per the title, I am considering purchasing from the following list of IN-expensive (Classic ?) Fragrances which all can be purchased for thirty dollars (or less) per bottle.

I KNOW I will purchase : CARON 3rd. Man and I'm pretty sure (if it's as good to me as it use to be) Bvlgair Black. The others would be a BLIND purchase.

    Contenders :

    Bogart One Man Show Gold

Bogart Bogart (Signature I believe it's known)

    ZINO Davidoff

    Vermeil PH Jean Louis

    Aramis Havana

    Jacques Fath PH

    Cerruit 1881

Club de Nuit Intense Man by Armaf

    Thanks for your help suggestions.

I only own 3 of those on your list.

Zino Davidoff - Very highly regarded on Basenotes, but I don't see the attraction. It's decent, and a great price, but doesn't do much for me.
Aramis Havana - I like this one quite a bit. Excellent value for the price. I highly recommend this one.
Armaf - Club de Nuit Intense - not bad. Much cheaper that Aventus, but it's not Aventus. For $30, it was a decent blind-buy for me, but it's not going to crack my top rotation.
    Current Summer Favorites:

    1. Xerjoff - Nio
    2. Tom Ford - Rive d’Ambre
    3. Dior - Homme Cologne 2013
    4. The Different Company - De Bachmakov
    5. Armani - Code Sport Athlete
    6. Montale - Aoud Legacy
    7. Dior - Homme Sport 2008
    8. by Kilian - Straight to Heaven
    9. Ermenegildo Zegna - Sicilian Mandarin
    10. Creed - Pure White Cologne

From this list would choose and recommend especially, in no particular order: One Man Show Gold Edition, Bogart Signature, Zino, Aramis Havana, Cerruti 1881

Glad to see you're getting Caron 3rd Man - one of my top fragrances.

    Also

Aramis Havana - can't go wrong with this one.
    Cerruti 1881 - not bad.
Club de Nuit Intense Man - very decent scent and perhaps one of the better 'Aventus on a budget' types out there.

For me it would be a no to all shown here. I'd rather save my bread to buy something I really want rather than buy something marginal because it's cheap. If you really like any of those though, great.

    +1 to Monsieur Hednic's answer.

As a side note, I much prefer Jacques Fath PH in vintage format. As vintage, it has more complexity than the latest version and turns out to reveal a very good amber fragrance. Vintage on that one is somewhat of a hidden gem, as people many times focus on or bais their thoughts regarding it based on the current. Oops, I let the cat out of the bag!

Thanks for your thoughts thus far. Jazzpool, I hear what you are saying. Please note there are Niche Fragrance I plan to order as well (not listed). I've always wanted to try CARON 3rd. Man due to positive reviews, good price, large size and the fact that it's not going to be a Fragrance worn by everyone. Besides, I happen to like "old School" Fragrances. Also, if I were to buy only Niche Fragrance, I would go broke and have a much smaller collection. I am however in the process of replacing some of my favorite older Niche Fragrances a little at a time such as Creed, SMN, L'Artisan, MPG, Lorenzo Villoresi, Diptyque, Serge Lutens, Dior, Montale etc. I'm also in the process of running down NEW (to me) Niche Fragrances starting out with Samples/Decants until such time as I KNOW I like a certain Fragrance/House. So, in the meantime, I have to "feed" my Fragrance habit with (hopefully) the best of the best IN-expensive Colognes to hold me over. Funny, on the whole, there are NOT too many "Designer" Colognes that grab my attention to warrant spending a lot of money. That being said, that does not prevent me from at least trying to find decent/wearable/appropriate (for a Guy my age 62) Fragrances. The HUNT continues!

Never thought much of Havana, although many people enjoy it.

Cerruti 1881 - I think the white bottled flanker is a better fragrance than the original IMO.

Not familiar enough with the other options.

Just get standard One Man Show – not the Gold Edition – or better yet, Bogart pH (with the signature on the front).

Cerruti 1881 & Havana are both excellent frags.

Black isn't worth purchasing and hasn't been in years. Very little left from its original formulation.

    Contenders :

Bogart One Man Show Gold - Get the original version instead.

Bogart Bogart (Signature I believe it's known) - Old school, but solid.

ZINO Davidoff - only in vintage form, not the cheap modern version. Superb.

Vermeil PH Jean Louis - preferably vintage, but still excellent

Aramis Havana - If you like Tobacco scents this is it. Excellent.

Jacques Fath PH - I don't know this one, but I guess it's gourmandish.

Cerruti 1881 - Underrated, seemingly simple summer scent. Very good.

Club de Nuit Intense Man by Armaf - This just came out in 2015, and I assume is an Aventus clone.

    Thanks for your help suggestions.

Of the ones you listed, I own and love Zino and Third Man, so approve of and recommend those. I'm familiar with Havana, but don't love it (a personal taste thing; it's a fine scent if you like very spicy, rich fougeres). Not familiar with the others.

I'd add Van Cleef and Arpels Pour Homme (a green, soapy leather) and Azzaro Pour Homme (benchmark aromatic fougere) into contention. I've also heavily partial to the dry, herbal pine and leather of Yatagan.

Staying on the (very) cheapie end of the spectrum, maybe Grey Flannel depending on your taste for violet, and Quorum if dirty pine/leather/tobacco sounds appealing.

+1 Aramis Havana and I'm seconding rynegne's suggestion of Azzaro Pour Homme.

I'd also recommend Lalique Hommage a L'Homme, though it's not an old classic. It's under $30 and well worth adding to any collection.

I would rank your list like so:

    Definite buys:
    Aramis Havana
    Cerruti 1881
    Bogart Signature
    Davidoff Zino

Pretty good, not gonna kick these out of the collection either:
    Vermeil PH
    Bogart One Man Show Gold

    No opinion, haven't sniffed:
    Jacques Fath PH
Club de Nuit Intense Man by Armaf

I have a different Aventus wannabe, Lomani AB Spirit Silver. Superficially similar, but nowhere near as good as the real thing. I can't say anything negative about CDNI, but if you're not going to wear this type of scent very often, a decant of Aventus is not a bad way to go.
Bvlgari Black is okay I suppose, but never tickled me enough to buy.
3rd Man is great, 5 star stuff IMO.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all your suggestions. I will order a few from these suggestion. That being said, I must confess (RANT WARNING!) ahead. This morning, I stopped by a discount Clothing Store that also carries a fair amount of "Designer" Colognes and provide testing/spraying strips. I sprayed perhaps half a dozen strips (of what I thought) might be the best from their collection of Fragrances. I spray and placed the strips along side the bottle and waited a few minutes before smelling. Upshot, I am NOT a happy Camper! Three of the Colognes tested were YSL Kouros. Now, back in the day, I very much enjoyed Kouros (many years past) however, upon smelling Kouros today, it smells like a shadow of it's former self. NOT good! I suspect Kouros has been toned waaaaay downed ? This really "Pees me off!"
Well, at least I was happy to find that BODY KOUROS (appears) to be unchanged but, I don't know that for sure. Might anyone knows if BODY KOUROS has remained unchanged over the last decade ? If so, please let me know. I also tried several other "Designer" fragrances and I"m just disappointed! Now, I truly don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but, I'm finding too many of today's Colognes (not only smell alike) but are also either UN-inspiring, boring, cheap smelling, overly priced, SICKENINGLY sweet/cloying
as was the case with new Versace Eros. Ugggggh. Oooh well, I will continue my hunt in attempt to find THE best budget "Designer" Fragrances.

Body Kouros, like most of those earlier Annick Menardos, has been formulated down to a watery version of its former self. I don't get much smoky incense in the newer stuff, but that's probably why you can find it for around $30 online, with vintage about 3x higher.

Great choices. Of the remaining ones on your list, i would consider Zino and Vermeil. I would highly suggest both for your next inexpensive purchase. Also check out two of the new Pinaud Clubman after shave fragrances - Whiskey Woods and Brandy Spice.
