    Default Flash Manhattan Meetup

Was a nice warm day so we got together.
Hat and Beard, Cytherian and me (or is it I. Never figured that one out).

Oh and there had to be Thai food out-sillaging Kouros.

We started at Barneys. Moved to Aedes and then Bigelow ( which had a surprisingly good collection of frags)

PS: For those in NY who wish to join us for these flash meetups, PM me your info or post here

    They really are.
And while we were eating and sniffing, the people over at next table joined us and told us about their fragrances. One of them lives in Paris and so we I got to correct few of the mispronunciations.

    Anyways a few takeaways:
    1. Malle has done with the big 3.5 ml beautiful sample bottles. Their samples now come in LVMH type 1.2ml small sprayer. I mean come on, when you charge 3 times the price for 100ml you better give 3 times the sample.
    2. Lartisan has really reformulated.
    3. Timbuktu - it is so different now. The fruits are gone and smoke is more prominent. Pass
    4. Voleur Roses - Not as good. Too synthetic
    5. AlAoudh: I like it now. More tame and wearable. Nothing like its old self (which was too animalic for me)
    6. The best find was Cire Trudon. Did not know about this house. It has 5 fragrances and they are all amazing. Best are Revolutions and Bruma. Apparently it is a candle maker that is doing fragrances now. We also tried their candles at Aedes and boy are they beautiful.

They have a boutique on Elizabeth Street opposite Atelier Cologne and sell their fragrance line there. Wonderful scents. Was lucky to get all five when they first launched.

Hat and Beard, Cytherian and me (or is it I. Never figured that one out).
In this case it's I, not me. You're talking about getting together. Just drop Hat and Beard and Cytherian out of the sentence. Would you say "I got together" or "Me got together". That's always a good way to figure it out.

    Edit:

Here's a random example of the opposite... wrongly using I when it should be me:

"Come to the circus with Julia, Robert, and I."

Drop Julia and Robert. Would you say "Come to the circus with me" or "Come to the circus with I"?

In this case me is correct.

A lot of times you'll just hear people use the I variation, because they think it sounds proper or something. Or you'll hear people substitute the word myself for both of them, because they don't know which to use. But that's wrong too in many cases. Easiest trick is to always just drop the other people out of the sentence and see which sounds correct.

Disappointing but not surprising on 1 & 2. So glad I had you help me get a new bottle of VdR before it was destroyed!

I liked Revolution the best of the Cire Trudons as well.

Definitely a great time again with those two! Huffing mass amounts of scents, eating mediocre Thai food over happy hour Sapporos, and engaging in conversation with two random gentlemen about how the spirit of our deceased acquaintances transcend the spirit realm and communicate their presence to us through fragrance...what more could one ask for?!

The highlight of my evening was experiencing the first formulation of Kouros. How the hell did I sleep on this fragrance for so long?! Aedes was good again as usual and so was CO Bigelow. Highlight of Aedes was having a lengthy conversation with the sales associate there about "poopy" fragrances, and for Bigelow it was getting to smell a couple of the new Proraso EDT's. Wood and Spice was my favorite of the ones they had and totally not what I was expecting! Really woody and has a dry vibe that reminds me of cypriol/nagarmotha oils.

One thing that I didn't know was Cire Trudon making personal fragrances! I've smelled the candles many times and enjoyed them, but it was nice to try their foray into other things. One of them smelled like a more tame version of Naomi Goodsir: Bois d'Ascese...I believe it was called Revolution. Aedes unfortunately did not have the Naomi Goodsir to compare side by side.

Got to smell Jovoy: Incident Diplomatique again and came to the conclusion that it smells like the ashes of tobacco you'd knock out of a pipe the day after smoking it. Really dry take on the patchouli/vetiver combo. I also smelled Jus Interdit for the 5th or 6th time and I really like it, but I just cant pull the trigger on the bottle because of the price tag. I mean I know that particular line are extraits, however I just don't get any longevity out if it when I've worn them either...and they are only 50ml bottles too!

Lubin: Le Vetiver was really nice on the tester strip too as was Itasca. Got my nose on Akkad another time and I think I regret not buying it when Henri Bendel has that huge sale a few years ago. Super balmy and resinous with a bright, lemony frankincense.

Decided to snap a photo of the group of us in the train station before we parted ways. As to protect the identity of my colleagues, I have made slight modifications.

Thanks for sharing the mini-meetup, epapsiou! It sounds like a wonderful time was had and it’s not surprising. I was just reminiscing today about our meetup last summer and how enjoyable it was. I miss New York.

Great explanations above on the use of “I” and “me.” A quick way to think about it too is “I” when it’s the subject in the sentence and “me” when it’s the object.

Hat and Beard and Epapsiou were great to see again -- glad we had such a beautiful evening for it too. Temps were in the 50's with no wind!

Before Epapsiou and I met up with Adam, we spent about a half hour at Barney's downtown. The sales associate there was very helpful. We spent most of our time at Malle. While fragrance quality is always great, I'm not finding anything new or innovating. We concluded that Malle and SL should collaborate on a few fragrances. Got to try Terenzi Orion and yes, it's very much like Aventus. A little less "colorful" as the blend of fruit and smoke is very balanced. I was also impressed with Trudon. Bruma and Revolution were a pleasant surprise.

It was good to explore Lubin again. I really enjoy their vetiver, but I recently picked up Profumo di Firenze Terrarossa (thanks to MegaMav) and I have to say I prefer it. It's like a slightly sweeter and more citrus Zegna Haitian Vetiver.

Jovoy Paris was pretty well represented, though Les Jeux Sont Fait was missing. I agree with H&B that Jus Interdit is amazing... but sadly so expensive compared to their other offerings.

This was my first time visiting Aedes de Venustas in the new location -- they've got about 20% more room and on the corner of two streets, so it has some nice window coverage (partially shaded). Their Serge Lutens counter is amazing! They've got slightly lit cut-outs for the bell jars. Then on an adjacent wall, plenty of room for the 50ml and 100ml bottles. Aedes has a nice niche fragrance assortment to experience, in an atmosphere reminiscent of a 19th century Orleans boutique. The back part of the place had this huddled corner where there were so many fragrances to sample... can't even remember all the houses represented.

Bigelow was a real surprise. I was expecting a pedestrian assortment of fragrances, but they had quite a potent niche representation. Perhaps even more fragrances than Aedes! I'll definitely revisit this one. I completely forgot to check out their tea section.

All in all, a great time and a nice mild evening for it. Looking forward to doing another one in early spring!

We met again yesterday. This time we went to Enfleurage, a shop made for basenoters . They have all the natural you have heard of. I was a novice there but Hat and Beard is a regular here (He is an amateur perfumer and a master incense maker).
We got to try all the oils, the ouds , SWs (Australian is not nearly as good as Mysore), African stone. The winner was Balsam of Strong(?) Storax.
The SAs were real nice and they let us try their own work-in-progress (which were really good)
Towards the end they burned the agarwood for us - my first time.
It was a fun night and, as usual, it did involve eating asian food and an SA being wooed by Kouros. But I will let cytherian talk about his Kouros adventures.

Do you mean you tried African Stone (hyraceum) in some pure form? And if so, what form? And what was it like?

I love hyraceum as a note. Please tell more about that experience.

Thank you for sharing and posting, congratulations for this very special event.

Even though thousands of miles away from the current personal place of residence, might consider to visit my relatives that incidentally happen to live in the NY surroundings almost just to participate to an upcoming BN meetup and synchronize this particular visit according to future meetup schedule (s).

Yes ma'am. We tried the poop.
Oh and speaking of poop we tried the ambergris too.
Ambergris is definitely poop. Hyraceum was nice and soft. Not as stinky as one would expect.

For me it was less about poop and more about elephant body odor... I was instantly transported to the zoo as a small child, staring in wonder as those enormous gray wrinkled gentle beasts.

Balsam of Storax was the essential oil hit for us. I bought a 5ml of it. They also had a few blended essential oils. Serenity Spirit was really nice, but Fire captivated me more. I also picked up a 30ml of Eucalyptus Lemon. Now at first, it smells a lot like citronella... and you'd think it was liquefied bug-away candles. But it's the drydown that is so nice and transforms to something very soothing. Glad I got it.

Oh and the SA at Barney's... can't recall his name. I want to say Jeremy or Jarmel. Very hip looking black guy, with cool short trimmed hair. I exposed him to Ritz KOUROS and he almost had an orgasm right there on the spot. It was entertaining to see someone react so strongly (and positively) to KOUROS. Ironic that as someone who is in the fragrance business would not know it. I also let the staff at Enfleurage smell it and they were also quite taken. It seems I am becoming the unofficial vintage KOUROS ambassador.

Again...a wonderful olfactory spree! It has been awhile since I'd been to Enfluerage, but it NEVER disappoints. They have so many offerings that can be tested and tried in an open atmosphere. The staff there is also extremely knowledgeable about the various species of oils they offer as well as the distillation processes used for all of them. The owner of the store actually has her own frankincense distillery in Oman and all of the oils, frankincense tears etc. are specifically sourced from there. Apparently the frankincense distillery is attached to a small shop that actually makes frankincense ice cream!

    1. Cytherian is definitely the vintage Kouros ambassador for the greater NYC area. A vintage bottle is literally never more than five feet away from him at any moment and every time I turn around he has the bottle under somebody's nose.

    2. I know that different species of botanicals make it to the endangered list, but I had no idea that both Rosewood and Spikenard were on there! The rosewood essential oil they used to carry was beautiful too. Spikenard is always interesting to smell too as It reminded me A LOT of that white paste we all used to use when we were in kindergarten. Slightly sweet, dry and with a subtle camphor aspect to it. Interesting tidbit, spikenard oil was said to be used to anoint the feet of Christ after the crucifixion. Not taking this off topic or create a stir at all, but just found that interesting.

    3. They have three different agarwood oil offerings at the moment. There are two wild harvest oils (one from Laos, one from India), and one farmed oil from Laos. All of them with a different scent profile. The farmed Laotian oil was extremely sharp, pungent, musky and cheesy. A very intense oil to say the least, but we got to smell it used in some of the new perfumes that Enfleurage will be making and it blends very nicely! The wild Laotian was similar in scent profile, however it did not have the intense sharp, cheesy opening that the farmed had. Much more smooth and rounded out, but still offered that barnyardiness and deep wood musk that you’d expect. The wild Indian oil was the star of the show. Very deep woods and earth with a great leathery/smoky vibe.

    4. For those of you that have never experienced the smell of burning/heated agarwood are really missing something special. It is a truly transcendental experience. They didn’t have any for sale this time around as they were expecting a shipment soon, but had some that they graciously let us imbibe in it with a piece they had for store use. I have purchased it from them multiple times and it never disappoints. They usually have two that they offer and one is usually a farmed and the other is wild. Although both are nice, the heavily saturated wild wood is by far superior. I believe the wild one they offer is considered “sinking grade” and we watched as the beautiful resin was bubbling on the wood as it was heating up. I still have some of the farmed stuff I bought from them years ago and I remember it being nice, but it’s almost like you have to smell through a generic “burning wood” cloud to get the scent of the sweet agarwood resin heating up.

    5. Another reoccurring theme in our meet ups seems to be poopy fragrances and smells. Both the Hyraceum (Africa Stone) and Ambergris didn’t disappoint either! I have a tincture of ambergris that I bought a few years ago that I thought was very strong with ambergris, but boy was I wrong! There literally must be the smallest amount in there and it really smells quite different when it opens up and isn’t in it’s natural, concentrated form. It did have that zoo-like smell to it as you stand by the elephant enclosure, but with a sweet, almost hay-like quality with a subtle oceanic saltiness over top. The Hyraceum was awesome! Not as animalic as I was expecting either. It had notes of leather, musk, woods, and was slightly sweet.

    6. Other than the agarwood, Balsam of Storax/Styrax was the star oil of the evening. Very balsamic and leathery and I almost pick up a mossiness in there too. The Beeswax Absolute was also very interesting. I got some on my finger and it stayed there until the next morning even though I’d washed my hands multiple times. Wax, honey and metal are what I got from it. Very sharp and polarizing. They also had about four different Rose oils that were all very different from each other. I can’t specifically remember all of the nuances of each, but Rose Otto was the best of the group. They also had one that was VERY bitter and green.

Here is the obligatory selfie documentation from the evening. Pardon the blur!
