Default Take this Quiz with a Twist.

Assuming each has a budget of $500 and a sizeable fragrance wardrobe.

Basenoter A spends all $500 on a 250 ml flacon of fragrance X and with rotation wears it once a week.

Basenoter B spends $50 on a 20 ml decant of the same fragrance X and with rotation wears it once a week. With the remaining $450 he gets to try out other perfumes, spends on a hot date or on any other fun stuff he fancies.

    QUESTION:-

Under what circumstances would you rather be Basenoter A?

Edit: (Not asking which type of Basenoter you are, nor referencing your real purchasing power )

B is the smarter one, getting "more bang for your buck" but I would rather have a full bottle...

Not sure I could ever go for A. For summer I like traditional EdC styles, and because they are so short lived, I go through a relatively large volume, so if I whittled my EdC selection to my holy grail neroli I could perhaps see myself doing that, but at this stage I could probably spread it around on 3 (Cologne Indelebile, Chanel Eau de Cologne, and Neroli Portofino) and be happier than with one large bottle of any single scent.
    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

I would only be Basenoter A if I had the disposable income to comfortably make that kind of fragrance purchase (and I have). Otherwise not a thing wrong with the Basenoter B approach at all.

    Lol!

B is more reasonable since you established the large wardrobe size. But if you have endless money (which I don’t) you may just want that beautiful bottle twinkling in your collection!

Just to clarify, the question is NOT asking which type you are but evidently some have chosen to interpret it so.

I have anticipated the answers given here thus far with the exception of ZealotCrusader’s which seems more of a ‘skirt around’. Also interesting to see classic type As’ response exemplified by Vmaster’s succinctly put “that’s how I roll.” Hard to beat ‘free fragrance’ argument from split-hosting but ‘time’ is a non-renewable asset so is it truly free or actually became even more expensive?

Btw you may answer more than once so keep them coming.

Well if you really want it strait, here it is.

I wouldn't want to be either A or B because the rules require me to use something once a week. My rotation circles are much larger than that, and some things I have for years and barely put dent in the bottle because I like it enough to keep, but not enough to use unless the mood strikes me.
oh look, I have a signature

I would only be Basenoter A if the fragrance in question is a rare or discontinued gem that I passionately love. The rest of the time I'm basenotes B, variety is the spice of life, and I my wardrobe is growing so fast that I doubt I'll ever get through a full bottle of anything in my life.

Stay cool, you guys. We’re just talking about a bunch of smellies here in a hypothesis. Don’t have to go into one’s upbringing, political leanings, domestic expenditure patterns, marital obligations, etc. But thanks tor sharing nonetheless. Fodder for another thread perhaps?

One of my answers to choosing route A is when route B is not readily available, especially when it comes to acquiring rare and discontinued fragrances which I covet. I see yellowtone had the same answer.

Another circumstance is when X is a fragrance I love but faced with the likelihood of discontinuation or reformulation.

@ZealotCrusader, the parameters are clear. It’s a hypothetical situation which doesn’t care about anyone’s actual wardrobe size nor frequency of rotation. But you chose to make it complicated and drew fire unnecessarily. Another non-answer. No points for you.

It makes little sense to choose A, but I still choose A.

I like having big, bold, beautiful bottles. Despite my signature, I tend to follow my eyes. Striking designs, evocative names and especially bright colours capture my imagination and I like to open my fragrance draw and gaze upon my captive boxed smellies, many of which will probably still be full in a decade's time...

In reality I would be neither. There is nothing, I would wear once a week, every week. Wait. I take that back. My "signature" is Lolita Lempicka for which I have over a dozen versions / bottles. I wear one of those at least once a week. That stated...

I would be an A, if I found a limited edition, crystal flacon, for that price. For example, one of Guerlain's crystal bee bottles for which I'd have to cough up the difference in price. However there are so many perfumes I'd like to try I would rather be a Basenoter B.

B is more logical, but I don’t wear anything once a week so the decant would dry up and go bad before I used it up and anyway, I love big pretty bottles.

Rarified or 'extinct' purchases will definitely require me to be in the Category A. Whether the fragrance or the bottle im not passing up the chance. However I usually am in Category A anyway which is to say I rarely buy decants and some of what i buy are necessarily small (3-15ml) or cannot be found in the large size.
