Default Keep or Return 2009 Creed Original Vetiver Question

    Hi all,

I'm fairly new to the frag world and am slowly building a collection.

I like the scent in Mugler cologne. I also like the house of Creed. I've read that OV has a similar scent as the MC and I wanted to smell for myself. Notino has a sale on OV so I bought one. The bottle that I received has a batch code suggesting that it was made in 2009.

My question: is that good or bad? I've read that the frag world has gone through some changes due to some new laws implemented around 2012 ( why Aventus is now different). Now some frags don't last as long per many reviews. Does my 09 bottle have those now-missing ingredients and thus is better than 2017 version?

Basically is it a keeper or should I return?

BTW if you ask how does it smell? Different than MC, more creamy and earthy. Does not smell rotten or spoiled.

    Thanks,

    psawjack

What it really boils down to is if you like it or not or not.

If you like it, keep it. Older is usually better here however Creed can have batch variation that may be good or bad so even if you don't like it you should find someone on the board who can tell you that. It may be worth a little more than you expect to the right person if that's the case. I personally like creamy and earthy, it may mean you're getting good sandalwood

I have a bottle from 05 or 06 and it’s fine. I wouldn’t be worried about it being past a used by date.

My Original Vetiver is from 2009 - smells great and more or less exactly like what is currently in stores today. If you think it smells good, keep it.

If you don't want it, call it "Vintage Creed" and sell it for $400 like people do with 4 year old Aventus.

I’d keep it. I have a 1000ml flacon from 2009 and it’s just fine. I’m about half way through it. I also use other bottles more current and enjoy the slight batch variations. I’ve worn more of that than anything over the last 9 years. Really enjoyable.

I don't believe I have ever heard of Original Vetiver having any particular "batch" being better than another, nor have I heard of it degrading or going off with age.

It's been the model of consistency over the years. If it wasn't, we would have definitely heard about it here!

However....although I think your bottle is fine, I don't think you should be receiving a 9 year old fragrance you purchased as "new". To me, that's just too over the line.

Olivier Creed has said in the past that the clock doesn't start ticking on a bottle until it is sprayed. Although I have no idea if that is true, it is definitely true that certain fragrances have a longer shelf life than others. Fragrances that have citrus in the top notes are especially known for going off.

I think I would at least call Notino up and ask about switching your bottle out with one that is no more than a couple of years old. If they say no, then they say no.....but i think I would at least ask them about it.

If we were talking about a rare Creed that was discontinued and is no longer being made, I don't think I would have any problem keeping the older bottle (assuming it smelled fine from the beginning). But receiving a common bottle of OV that is already 9 years old is too much to ask, IMO.

Thanks all for the good information. I do like the scent and am happy with the purchase so I'll keep it. I guess that this is to be expected from discounter purchasing.

As long as it has been stored correctly, you should be fine. A keeper for sure.

    IMO,

Mugler Cologne is the 'light beer' version of Original Vetiver. Both smell similar on the opening and Mugler is the more fresh, airy, crisp and gentler scent while Original Vetiver is more deep, rich, earthy, thicker. I think owning both is redundant, so it's best to pick whether your want "fresh and light" or "rich and deep". I also swear that Original Vetiver smells like it has a touch of "Barbercide" in it (that disinfecting solutions old-school barbershops use to disinfect their scissors and shears). I think Original Vetiver is the better of the two, but Mugler on a budget is the better pick if you are light on cash.

I agree with you. I did end up getting both. Getting a 10.2oz bottle of MC at $90 is hard to beat but OV has such a rich and creamy feel to me. Like others have said and done I use MC before and after the gym and since I've tried OV after a shower. I'm happy with that!

Good for you, especially if you really like them both. I have a bottle of each and don't find them redundant, especially when purpose is considered, like you mentioned. Mugler for a quick refresh, Original Vetiver for something to put on in the morning and have last most of a work day.

Wow, you got a 2009 in 2018? That's like some fragheads wet dream, haha.

Around here older doesn't necessarily mean worse - more often than not it means BETTER.

As long as it hasn't spoiled, and it smells fine, then it probably is fine. Perfumes can last decades. Keep it out of light, in a consistent cool/room temp temperature range.

    Enjoy!
