    Default Chanel Bottle Leaking

I have a 200ml bottle of Chanel Coromandel that I discovered had been inexplicably leaking. It appeared to be coming from the atomizer, and was seeping out around the metallic base of the sprayer. I purchased some bottles in order to decant if necessary, however the leakage apparently seems to have stopped for now and I am keeping an eye on the level.

I store my perfumes upright and haven't encountered this before with the bottle I have owned for several months. It was also produced in 2014, so I'm not sure what made it decide to do this now. The only thing I can think of is that there have been some temperature changes recently and maybe the pressure caused it to move up the spray tube and leak out a bit. This has possibly abated due to the pressure inside the bottle equalizing.

Has anyone had this happen and can shed light?

Of all of my perfumes this is the one I'd least like this to happen to, so I was a bit saddened and worried. I would hate to lose any more juice, but I also would hate to decant it as I love the bottle.

Wow, yes, of all the ones to have it happen to - what a disappointment! I haven't ever encountered that situation, but I can't imagine what could have caused it except (as you surmise) pressure changes. But if the pressure changes were due to temperature shifts, the temps would surely have been extreme - and if that were the case, it's strange that only the one bottle leaked.

Edited to add: Maybe something about the bottle itself was defective, and it took a pressure change to make it apparent. Just guessing.

I have all the 200ml Chanel Exclusives and have not seen that happen to any of mine. Seems strange.

I would certainly get in touch with Chanel about this. I haven't ever had to deal with their customer service myself, but there are countless stories here on Basenotes by people who report that Chanel is extremely responsive in situations like this.

The bottle was purchased in 2014, so it's a discontinued EDT and Chanel will not be able to replace it. Unless capt. carl can demonstrate that he purchased the bottle from Chanel's website or a boutique, they won't care. I have not found Chanel's customer service to be particularly helpful - they respond quickly, but in scripted generic ways.

So sorry to hear this happened to you. I cannot imagine what caused the leak either other than what you yourself suggested. Why do such things always seem to happen to our most cherished bottles??

I would contact Chanel about it. I do not know if they will offer you a replacement EdP or not, but perhaps they will extend some other offer to you? Good luck, and please let us know what happens.

I've had this happen to a few bottles (not Chanel exclusives). Older ones typically. I think it's a minor production defect in the atomizer or the seal, that as you say creates a problem under certain pressure or temperature conditions.

I had this happen to a 200ml 31 Rue Cambon (sealed) that was shipped to me airmail. It's code was 8401 (December 2014), though it was shipped to me in 2016. The bottle's magnetic silver ring was stuck inside the cap and the bottle had leaked considerably. It was a bummer to say the least.

I recently purchased a 100ml Frederic Malle bottle, it was rather cold outside when I walked with it home (maybe 8 C), after spraying it for the first time there was upon lifting off the cap again an hour later a few tiny drops all around the metal part on the glass and the nozzle was very wet. Small amount maybe 0.1 ml or so came out on its own, not a big deal. Anyway it stopped doing this after a short time being at room temperature and I don't think it will happen again. I'm guessing only the nozzle was where the perfume came from and dripped down on the glass from the roof of the cap. In fact I very much doubt the juice came from anywhere else as my prior experience is the FM bottles are extremely durable (hammer tested 1 or 2 myself...empty ones).

The only other experience with leaking is when I have put a bottle or two in the fridge - e.g. a 100ml of ghost man that I have as backup for the next decade. That one got a bit sticky around the nozzle after a year or maybe two years, even tho I haven't used it. I assume it's just temperature fluctuations there as well.

I never use a fragrance until it has had at least 24 hours to rest in my dark, dry, low humidity cupboard.

I never, ever, ever put a fragrance in the refrigerator. Refrigerators are very humid environments and humidity is not good for fragrance. I would not even store a very inexpensive Avon or a B&BW fragrance in the refrigerator.

I also perhaps seem to have this problem w one of my grey vetiver 50ml bottles that I keep in the car ( I park in a structure during work so no fear of greenhouse effect during summer).
I noticed the bottle around the nozzle is a bit wet and it seemed to have made wet slightly certain parts of the bottle ( you can tell right away due to the frosted glass) . I couldnt imagine it is me, because I am pretty careful w all my stuff, but I think it is because I keep the bottle horizontal and in the center compartment.
I m testing it right now to see if it continues. But I think there is some slight seepage from underneath the pumper somewhere. I dont think too much evaporated or seeped as it would have made my car smell of grey vetiver or the compartment. But when you wipe the wet area w a finger you can tell it is the perfume due to its scent and viscosity.
