Yep indeed. I have a bottle from the mid-80s. Alas, as with so many vintages, the top notes have moved into that aged sour phase, but beyond that it’s good stuff. There’s clearly more oakmoss in that version, and its overall cast is darker, but as I’ve gotten to know the current version, I really have few complaints. What I initially thought was a very light fragrance I now realize is perfectly potent, it just simultaneously has a sort of sheer, refined character at the same time. Resinous, earthy, and yet airy. Even the vintage gives me that effect.

    Initio Oud for Greatness

I just spritzed a small amount and am enjoying it wafting from my hand back at work

Btw, what is up with Initio sprayers - they always leak more than other bottles, especially when first sprayed. Need to get that pressure equalized here in higher elevation.

    Montblanc Explorer (2019)

The kind of thing that doesn't need a lot of explanation. Basically a democratization of the style Aventus popularized without trying to be a direct copy like many clones. This is slated to be Cool Water for Gen Z, but whether it will or not depends entirely on marketing. A smooth, plainer, sportier kind of vibe too.

A perfect fragrance, as far as I'm concerned.

Sign o' the times: even in its current formulation, it still smells so startlingly fresh and natural that if it wasn't so commonly available you'd think this was a high-end creation.

LDDM has had me swooning all day. Another one I’m surprised I took so long to come around to and grab a bottle of. I’d been sampling it off and on for years now. It’s so good.

Labdanum 18 (2006) by Le Labo.

Rainswept, dark day beyond my window. Glenn Gould “Goldberg Variations” playing softly (yet you can still hear the signature shift and squeak of his chair as he fingers the keys). Weekend parchment at hand.

This one “particularly” works on this occasion. It gently hums along at the low end of the spectrum. Musky, semi-sweet woods, warm and inviting in close quarters. There is a tailored place for this one for me and this is it.

    Smooth. Contemplative. Background supporting cast.

Still, my apparent fondness aside, Labdanum 18 confounds me. I wrote a review for this one over two months ago and have still not submitted it. Why? - because it varies from neutral to positive, and I do not wish to edit with a rating change once submitted.

As a fan of musks and animalic orientals in general this should have been a clear win . . . but there exists a certain lack of direction that leaves me, well, suspect. Still, I keep returning to it, I keep wearing it. All the while having this hesitation about its overall mark.

And Le Labo as a house bloody well confounds me too! And yet I have a few of their offerings and keep rambling over to their trough to sample their wares and take them home with me.

I once explained to an acquaintance that Le Labo wants to be a Frédéric Malle. But, dear Le Labo, you are not a Jedi yet!

So, yes, I’m “particularly enjoying” it today, though it grates me at the same time. I’m not sure if others have not only suffered the same confusion, and at the same time - most bewilderingly - allowed a fragrance into their collections?
