    Bottega Veneta pour Homme (2013)

A fresh citrus opening that doesn’t say long before settling into a clean, spicy pine that elicits a cool forest floor. An acceptably soapy clean with a base warmed with nominal patchouli and labdanum, and a thin not-too-robust leather.

Myself, I enjoy collecting and mixing various oils and perhaps I like to imagine the clary sage at work here as an uplifting sensation - for some reason I always feel like Bottega Veneta pour Homme is a pick-me-up.

This wearing reminds me to procure another bottle soon. This is easy to wear, it feels classic (a wide berth of a word in this hobby, I know), and it just seems to have a genuine reach across age demographics. I feel many men can enjoy this as a dumb reach. If nothing else the bottle is quite handsome.

    Chevalier d'Orsay by Parfums D'Orsay (1911)

This is a bridge between 19th century powdery florals and early 20th century citric chypres, bringing together a sour civeted citrus opening over a dry spiced lavender heart before settling on a proto-chypre base that injects iris into the typical oakmoss/sandalwood platform of masculines in the vein. At once this smells classic, not overly done, not sweet, and an odd mix of sour virility with bracing clean. Later Chevalier d'Orsay settles into a lingering light woody mossy base like what a "properly masculine" scent would be considered, just with subtle hints of that aforementioned iris, keeping it from being hirsute like a 60's or 70's chypre for men.

    Arôme 3 by Parfums D'Orsay (1943)

Sort of a dry chypre/fougère hybrid unisex in original intent and very much like a precursor to Balenciaga Ho Hang (1971) which it likely inspired, Arôme 3 traditionally only had women in the initial ads but was enjoyed more by men as time went on. Lavender, herbs, sage, and a heavy oakmoss plonk over sandalwood and coumarin, Arôme 3 is just class in a bottle, released in the thick of WWII after most of Parfums D'Orsay fled France to operate out of NYC. Perfumed by the unknown Jacques Guerin. Love it.

Etiquette Bleue by Parfums D'Orsay (1908)

Powdery vanillic oakmoss and sandalwood underpinning orange blossom and an array of white florals, Etiquette Bleue feels both like a precursor to Guerlain L'Huere Bleue (1912) and future parfums built up from orange blossom/neroli accords. Originally launching Parfums D'Orsay, this perfume was said to be created by the Comte D'Orsay himself in 1830, and given to his lady friends. As with most claims by perfume houses, history does not corroborate this story, meaning Parfums D'Orsay were perhaps the first French perfume house to make up their own pedigreed history for clout brownie points before Creed and Parfums de Marly made it a popular marketing tactic. Still, Etiquette Bleue is pretty good and very dandy-like.
