    Default Need help picking a fragrance for a wedding

    Greetings and salutations, good folks at Basenotes!

    Firs a disclaimer: my experience with perfumes is virtually non-existent, me not having much money to spend on such things and me also not being much of a perfume guy to begin with. So please excuse my bad explanations and ignorance.

    I'm a man, in my early thirties and invited to a my best friend's wedding in the middle of May. Due to my geographical location (Bulgaria) weather is expected to be rather warm. I'm looking for a perfume for said wedding.

    I'm guessing something more on the fresh and youthful side but still with some masculinity and elegance. I'm not particularly flashy person so I'm also guessing something that is a bit subtle but still leaving an impression. Grabbing the ladies' attention is not a primary goal but I guess it would be a nice bonus.

    The more well known fragrances in my collection are:
    - "Blue Seduction for Men" and "King of Seduction" (both received as gifts but find quite decent overall);
    - Chrome (another gift which I generally like but it may be a bit too youthful for the occasion);
    - New York by Kenneth Cole (another gift that I enjoy but feel may be a bit too dark-ish?);
    - L'Eau Par Kenzo Mirror Edition pour Homme (which I feel may be a tad too fresh maybe);
    - a small 4 ml. bottle of Platinum Égoïste that I found in my dorm room while I was in Germany for a few years (it's quite nice but maybe more suitable for more sophisticated men in their fourties?);
    - Essenza di Zegna (basically my favorite and out of these by far the most likely candidate to use for the wedding, should I end up not buying anything else).

    I've researched this quite a bit by reading a lot of reviews, and after eliminating the fragrances that are too expensive for me or no longer being sold here, I've come up with the following list of fragrances to sample and/or further research:
    - Azzaro's Visit and Chrome Intense;
    - Versace pour Homme;
    - Bvlgari pour Homme Extreme;
    - Eau de Rochas Homme;
    - Guerlain Homme L'Eau Boisée.

    Any input on what you guys think would be the best choice (even if not in either of the lists above) would be most welcome.

    Even before reading your whole post I was going to suggest Bvlgari pour Homme Extreme! You can also go with Essenza di Zegna which you have, while Guerlain Homme L'eau Boisee is an excellent choice if you like the scent of lime. I haven't tried Eau de Rochas Homme, and am not a fan of Chrome Intense or Versace pour Homme as they smell somewhat synthetic to me, and Visit is okay but nothing special.

    Welcome to Basenotes!

    Welcome to you AliveNoMore! Enjoy your time here at Basenotes! Perhaps Mugler Cologne.

    Yes, this, in spades.

    Welcome to basenotes. You are the lucky one that will receive my first post and I personally would suggest for a wedding:

    1) Prada L'Homme ( clean smell, elegant not abusive can suit everything)
    2) Chanel Allure Homme Sport Extreme ( this fragrance is a nobrainer and can be worn everywhere and be useful, like a swiss army knife)

    Hope I could help you or point you in a pleasant direction.

    Like this suggestion also.

    Also adding, to the personal favorites from the previous list that have to include definitely: Azzaro Visit, Eau de Rochas and Guerlain Homme Eau Boisee, to the numerous great suggestions already mentioned, in no particular order: ADG Essenza and ADG Profumo, Gucci pour Homme II, Carven Homme, Dior Homme Sport, Eau Eau Tres Fraiche, Cartier Roadster, L'Homme Ideal Cologne, YSL M7 Fresh

    +1 for Bulgari Pour Homme Extreme.

    This isn't your day, but you're an important player. You'll smell great, but not attention-getting, which is the balance you're after.

    (I don't know the Zegna, but I'm a fan of the house and it could be a great choice as well.)

    /AC

    p.s . fwiw, I wore Bois du Portugal at my own wedding.

    Wow! I don't think I've ever seen any other community that is this passionate and at the same time excited to welcome new people.

    Anyhoo... Thank you all for your feedback and additional suggestions. I will definitely check out all of them. Reviews I mean.

    Narrowing down the list will be difficult since there aren't many local stores that have such perfumes and they tend to stock the more popular fragrances, so sampling might be tricky.

    You are most welcome! Strongly suggest you to try before buying, as blind-buying can be disappointing.

    Either of these two, both good suggestions imo.
    My Most Complimented:

    1). Aventus - Creed
    2). Sauvage - Dior
    3). Allure Homme Sport - Chanel
    4). L'Homme - Prada
    5). Acqua Di Gio Profumo - Giorgio Armani

    Just a quick update. I managed to sample Dior Homme Sport and Versace pour Homme today.
    The former I did not like. It's not bad but to my nose it's a bit too sweet and generic. Not my scent.
    The latter on the other hand is not bad at all. I'm not smitten by it but it's a rather interesting so I will keep it in mind.

    I'm assuming the Chanel Allure Homme Sport Extreme is actually Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme, as I cannot find another Sport Extreme here. Regardless, they are both a bit over my budget.

    Regarding the Acqua di Gio Profumo, I'm left with the impression that it's good but a bit more of an evening/date fragrance.

    Another update. Managed to try a few others.

    Terre d'Hermès. It's a nice scent but I can't help but feel it would be more fitting for a bit older and more stylish man. Not for me.
    Bvlgari pour Homme Soir was really inoffensive but it reminds me too much of soap. To me it seems best suited as an every day office/business fragrance.
    A couple of Calvin Klein ones: Euphoria and Truth. I found both quite decent with Euphoria maybe on the generic side of things that perhaps more people would own, whereas Truth was to me the best of the bunch: quite fresh, really grassy (even I with my complete lack of experience and knowledge could notice it) but still retains some style and elegance. Perhaps a bit too subtle for my needs, although slightly more generous application would resolve that.

    Anyway, I will try to find more samples tomorrow.

    I need some input once again.

    For those who do not wish to (re)read my original post, here is the gist: 33 year-old male (me) needs a fragrance that is on the fresh side of things but also still has some masculinity, elegance and class for a wedding, as a guest. Attention/compliments from the ladies would be nice but not as important.
    The wedding is in May so I'm expecting temperatures in the upper 20's and even 30's (Celsius). The whole thing might last quite a while, from before noon to maybe even late at night, so I'm guessing a fragrance that is suitable for evenings/nights as well. Longevity might not be an issue, as I would try to bring the bottle with me to re-apply if needed.

    Based on the suggestions early in the thread (for which I am very grateful), all the sampling I've managed to do, and further research, here is my new list.
    The list is from most to least expensive. I might be able to get two, depending on the total price so... please suggest two just in case.

    Also, as a point of reference, my favourite scent in my tiny collection is by a large margin Essenza di Zegna.

    Pour Monsieur by Chanel & Dune pour Homme by Dior (basically same price)
    Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche by Hermès
    Eau Sauvage by Dior
    Tuscany Per Uomo by Aramis
    Pour Homme Extréme by Bvlgari
    Homme L'Eau Boisée by Guerlain & Man Eau Fraîche by Versace (basically same price)
    Icon by Dunhill
    Eau de Rochas Homme by Rochas

    Based on my impressions so far, the idea of blind-buying Bvlgari's Pour Homme Extréme + one of the other cheaper ones is kind of stuck in my head.

    I read a lot of opinions about short longevity of the Eau Sauvage, which worries me, especially since I did not manage to sample that particular Dior fragrance. Dune pour Homme is a possible alternative, though. Or Sauvage Very Cool Spray.

    Those other alternatives would be fine also.
