Default Cities to travel for perfume shopping

Iím sure this has been posted before, and Iím also sure a straight up answer from many of you will be Paris, but where else are your top cities for perfume specific travel?

    Many thanks!

In for answers but I'll be spending 3 months in Paris starting in June so I think I'm set lol. I imagine Dubai is another great place to be for frag lovers.

Concur that Paris beats all the rest. Plus there is also the osmotheque.

Distant second, NYC. Then many major European cities (like Milan or London). European cities typically both have a large selection of niche (in dept stores or dedicated shops) as well as store that stock large selections of mainstream.

You're welcome. Taking Paris out of the equation, then New York, London, Milan and Dubai as has been mentioned.

Paris obviously, but London is great too.

Haven't been to Paris, but London's selection is already overwhelming enough for me as it is. Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Fortnum and Mason, Liberty, and countless boutiques on top of that...

I'd love to go to Paris to visit the Serge Lutens boutique though.

Well, besides the obvious Paris, London's not bad now especially since Jovoy owned a store in Mayfair. It's got a fair amount of British home brands in their own boutiques (Penhaligons, JoLoves, Jo Malone, Floris etc) as well as some really nicely curated selections in department stores (Harvey Nick's, Salon de Parfum at Harrods, Fortnum's).

What I'm willing to cut off a limb to get an answer is where to go to find quaint little antique perfume stores in lazy half-forgotten towns filled to the brim with vintages!!

filled to the brim with vintage is now impossible. But provincial Italian towns do have old regular perfume stores which still have some, but not too much, old stock. For instance, two weeks ago I stopped by a store I knew in Lucca, Italy. The store had already been found and raided by another BNer years ago, but I did find a collection of vintage shower gels like Kouros etc. This BNer and me also raided a store in nearby Massa for goodies. Some of such stores may still exist elsewhere, perhaps even more so in southern Italy.

What a thrilling image. A couple of Basenoters meeting up and forming a pack like wild dogs, and then raiding the villagers for their perfume wares, like brigands* or pirates.

    *insider perfume joke for Cacio.

Thanks for the exciting story and a promise of great treasures to those who know where to look. I know where my next wandering vacation will be!

Paris and NYC are the obvious ones.

I'll add Amsterdam and Rome from my experience. Amsterdam just has a lot of great shops and boutiques with a surprisingly wide niche selection. Rome (and Italy in general, really) is a great mecca for sampling highly regarded Italian brands, some of which aren't so easy to sample.

+1 in particular on the gracefully aged perfumeries in small Italian towns. Even if you don't find any gems, it's nice to visit such stores, and know that they really do exist.

We didn't quite raid the shops together. Just separately... Indeed, he found one and let me know, and I found another and let him know.
