    Default Reccomendations please

    Hi
I'm looking to broaden my fragrance collection. At the moment I'm a little lost on what actual ingredients I like, so was hoping that if I post my current favourites, those more knowledgeable than me might be able to give me some recommendations.

All time favorites (those that I will always wear, if I could):
    • Mont Blanc Legend
    • Kenzo Time for Peace (Discontinued)
    • Cacharel
    • Lacoste Pour Homme
    • Creed Aventus (not sure of batch but the one I tried in House of Fraser was amazing)
    • Creed Irish Tweed (not sure of batch but the one I tried in House of Fraser was amazing)

    Current favorites:
    • Creed Aventus (decant, not sure of batch number, but not as good as the one in HoF)
    • Creed Irish Tweed (decant, not sure of batch number, but not as good as the one in HoF)
    • Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
    • Creed Royal Oud

The Jury is still out on
    • Tom Ford Neroli Portofini (some days I love it, other days its a bit meh)
    • Issey Miyake L'eau D'issey Pour Homme (everyone else says its great, but I'm just not sure)

What I've had, but didn't like:
    • Mont Blanc Legend Intense
    • Hugo Boss, Bottled Night
    • Giorgio Armani, Black Code, Code Sport and Acqua di Gio
    • Creed Geranium, Original Vetvier, Millesime Imperial, Vetvier Geranium, Iris Tubereuse, Original Santal (only ebay samples, so could be fake)

I've currently got the following in my basket at Fragrance samples.co.uk.

    • Bond No.9 New Haarlem
    • Hermes Terre d'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche
    • Versace Man Eau Fraiche
    • Hermes Terre d'Hermes Parfum
    • Creed Bois du Portugal
    • Prada L'Homme
    • Creed Viking
    • Tom Ford Private Blend Italian Cypress
    • Tom Ford Private Blend Azure Lime
    • Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue
    • Amouage Reflection Man
    • Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme

Based upon what I do and don't like, I would really welcome your opinions on what I should remove from or add to my basket.

    Thanks in advance.

    Zack

Wow, great list, many thanks. I'll keep that list safe and add a few to my order.

As others were saying, it seems you tend to gravitate towards modern style, woody or woody ambery.

I agree that the Terre d'Hermes line could be worth trying, because they have some fresh element, but the base is woody (you don't seem to like those that are fresh throughout).
Perhaps you could also look into some incenses, just to see whether the genre clicks: eg CDG2 man (incensy but fresh), or the CDG incense line (more woody, less fresh, but still dry).

I am not sure what aspect of Aventus you like, but Acqua di Parma Colonia Leather has a dry leather note. This may be what you're looking for, or may be it's exactly what you are not...

Thank you both. 10ml of Creed Virgin Island Water now on order from Toms Creed Decants (great prices there), and the CDG added to the list to try. Unfortunately Fragrancesamples.co.uk don't stock them so will add to next order from elsewhere.

Will do, but don't expect the most enlightening review from me with regard to notes, projection etc etc, as all this is very new to me. It will probably be more along the lines of "I like it" or "I don't".

Thankyou all both for the advice, and for totally confusing me

I now have the following decants on order:

    • 10ml Creed Virgin Island Water from Tom's Creed Decants 2* (absolutely love the smell, but not sure if I want to smell of it....will people wonder if I've a bath in Hawaiian tropic oil.....great shame that the lime recedes in a short time)

    From fragrancesamples.co.uk
    • Amouage Interlude Man - 1ML 0*(Just too nasal for me...really bites the nose)
    • Tom Ford Private Blend Azure Lime - 1ML 0* (don't detect any lime, smells of quality but really not my thing)
    • Versace Man (Purple)- 1ML
    • Tom Ford Private Blend Italian Cypress - 1ML 3* (smoky, woody, gives that warm feeling of a wee dram of 90's Distillers Edition Lagavullin, but only for special occasions, def not a wear to work frag)
    • Hermes Ambre Narguile - 1ML 1-2*
    • Hermes Terre d'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche - 1ML
    • Prada L'Homme - 1ML
    • Amouage Reflection Man - 1ML

    From Ebay seller
    • Mancera Cedrat Boise - EDP 5ml

From a very helpful splitter (thank you hdeoliveira80) on here :
    • Tom Ford, Tobacco Vanille 10ml
    • Tauer L'air, Du Desert Marocain 2ml
    • Maison MArgiela, By the Fireplace 5ml
    • Parfums De Marly, Herod 5ml
    • Hermes Terre D'Hermes EDP 10ml
    • Dior Homme Parfum 5ml
    • Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum 2012 5ml
    • Comme Des Garcons 2 Man 5ml
    • Armani Myrrhe Imperial 2ml
    • Acqua Di PArma Fico Di Amalfi 5ml

Now that I've finished being like a child in a sweetie shop (unfortunately without my Mother to restrain me), I think that is a fair selection to get me started!!!!!!!

Once again, thank you all for taking the time to help and advise me.

Edit: I'll edit this post as they arrive and I try them. 3*=keeper, 2*=keeper, 1*=not for me, 0*=why, oh why?...

Mancera cedrat boise, it's a bright woody, fruity scent that dries down to a smooth woody vanilla, and performance is excellent, you can find a 4oz bottle for about $100 on ebay or discounters.
I came here to talk fragrances & chew bubblegum.. and i'm all out of bubblegum.

Creed Virgin Island Water now arrived. Tested with just one spray on the wrist. Lime dominates at first (really strong) but lime recedes very quickly, soon settles down to a pleasant creamy coconut oil with a hint of citrus and a whif of rum. An hour in, and the lime has almost completely receded, which is a shame as that gave a much needed sharpening up of the coconut creaminess. The coconut seems quite sweet (I guess that's the vanilla) more like a coconut ice cream. Doesn't project far either, more than 1/2m away and I just get occasional whiffs (which is good imo), but that was just one spray.

I think that its not like any other fragrance I've tried. I will definitely wear it, but not as an all day frag. Its more of a Mediterranean holiday type fragrance. In fact, if you've ever walked to a remote Mediterranean beach (wearing Hawaiian Tropic / Ambre Soleir oil) through a cedar forest, this scent will take you straight there again. Very evocative.

Its the kind of frag I love to smell, but not sure if its the kind of fragrance I want to smell of, if that makes sense. In summary, very nice, but would be improved with a little less sweetness and a little more bite or sharpness.

Might be worth trying Laboratory Perfumes Gorse if you like VIW. It's much of a likeness but cheaper, lasts well and is far softer in its 'creamy-sweet' aspect. If you've smelled gorse flowers which litter our countrysides, you'll have a good approximation to its dry down. Plenty of lime to start, too.

+1 for Cedrat Boise. A strong, sharp-fruity, woody-based, powerful fragrance. I've not come across many whom haven't liked it and I'm sure you'd appreciate it having tried (and liked) Aventus.

Definitely worth trying TdH Parfum. I found it gorgeous and, if I read rightly that you enjoy a closer-sitting fragrance, it'll tick that box too. Very rounded and orangey but not 'orangeade' type sweetness there. A very nice buy imo.

I'm particularly appreciating Jubilation XXV by Amouage. It's almost jammy in feel, thick and opulent. Very good stuff though a lot of people claim the reformulation has ruined it. I've not tried the vintage to compare but I'm more than happy with the current offering.

Xerjoff Ivory Route. Contrary to your tending towards sweet openings then woody dry-down, this takes an almost opposite approach with a peppery-woody start and drying down to a far creamier sandalwood. Very easy to wear despite the price.

Xerjoff Naxos. Another strong offering. If you've tried Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Havane, you'll have a rough idea of what this smells like. Sweet tobacco and honey up top and a similar woody-creamy base to Ivory Route but with more floral aspects (though not exactly floral in itself). It's far more refined than Pure Havane and less sweet for definite.

I'll have a think about any others that might tick boxes for you.
