I love animalistic scents but with 4 different ouds, this sounds promising.

The only issue with “crocodile” oud is that it doesn’t smell all that great and isn’t exactly the same kind of oud to my understanding. Crocodile oud is often sold as “fake” oud and truthfully I’m not too impressed by its smell. Unless I’m mistaken which could be entirely possible but from the articles I’ve read about Bouya and from what I’ve smelled it’s pretty off putting. Do you have more info on it by chance?

Bouya has two meanings. It is both a grade of Agarwood (Aquilaria) and a totally different species of tree (Aetoxylon). I believe in this situation, Bortnikoff is using Aquilaria Bouya, which is basically an inferior grade of Agarwood that has very little to no resin (white wood).

Regardless of which one he is actually using, my guess is that its use is mainly to act as a fixative/performance booster

    Welcome!

Oud Monarch if you like gourmandish and a bit more of a subtle oud.

Lucky Oud if you like more of a sweet fragrance and sandalwood. Lotus and Sandalwood is a classic combo.

Having said that, Lucky Oud is limited, I would at least get that now to be safe.

If you're in Melbourne, PM me if you like, I have both, you can check them out, pick one.

I’d have to guess that Dmitry isn’t counting the Bouya as an Oud, for whatever reason, hence the Triad name. I’d guess it’s why he just calls it Bouya here and not Bouya Oud like he has other times.

    —-edit——

I’m not going to pretend I know, for sure! But I AM excited about a big massive Oud with hyraceum. Please let it be next level Oud goodness. I love a good Bortnikoff Oud.

I’m looking forward to smelling TRIAD. Bouya is also used in Bortnikoff’s Sir Winston. While I did receive an unsolicited compliment on the bouya (also known in local parlance as ’gaharu’, its profile is not quite as distinctive as those from other oud distillates of Cambodian, Vietnamese, Chinese or Indian origins.

Good point. Previously, he has stated “Oud Bouya” in other compositions, so maybe this time it is actually Aetoxylon. Either way, I’m very intrigued by the Ceylon, Hainan, and Thai combo. Three very different smelling ouds, but I’m sure if Dmitry is doing it, it must work.

Can Bortnikoff do an Oud or any fragrance that is not heavy on the florals? I stopped Sampling them because almost every one was floral overload. I really want to like this house because I know the ingredients are high quality. In the end I guess its a good thing I dont like them because it saves me money.

I keep wanting to try this line outside of the fragrances that I am running into that have either champaca, magnolia or frangipani which always seem to take over fragrances IMO and not something I want to smell. Then I ran into Zemfira online, a rose-oud! I am a huge fan of rose but I'm reading this is a super sugary type of rose used? Seems odd. How does this compare to something like...say Malik al Ta'if?

In Malik al Taif the talf rose smells entirely different from the hybrid tea rose in Zemfira.

Malik is a dark jammy rose. Much more oudy.

Zemfira is a bright champagne-like tea rose with a woody facet.

I'm in the same boat, that problem will be eliminated with Triad. I did enjoy Oud Maximus and Oud Monarch though.

Thanks for this. Malik on me moves from lemon up front to a slightly jammy deep, dark rose with heavy oud...so we do experience it similarly. I think this is one maybe I'll have to try before I blind buy.

That’s funny because that is the very first thing I thought of when I saw the name.

    very observant, bklow

Honestly, the one I'm most interested in is Oud Sinharaja. I don't believe there has been an oud fragrance yet that focuses on Sri Lankan Oud...wild Sri Lankan Oud at that. Ceylon Oud usually isn't a favorite of mine; However, I have smelled a couple that are spectacular. My hope here is that it's a fairly clean (non fermented or smoky) distillation that focuses on the blue/green oceanic and fruity qualities of Ceylon Oud with that great Oudy backbone. I think that would blend really well with the exotic florals and make for a great tropical beach style fragrance. Think of an Oudier version of Amber Cologne. Yes please!

Awesome name. I don't think he supports Triads as such, we're talking about art here. Take Sir Winston as another example, he was a divisive figure, but I don't think Dmitry shows any political affiliation in using that name.
