Default How to spot a fake (Creed Acqua Orignale)

    Well.....
    It was bound to happen.
You know the story, late night....insomnia....eBay.....a deal to good to be true....yada, yada.

Guy had a 100% seller rating. Iíll be sure to change that.

I recently fell in love with Cedre Blanc and although I got a great deal on a full bottle of it (along with Asian green tea) from Maxaroma I figured Iíd give the good ol bay a look for a backup bottle.

To my surprise a vendor with a 100% seller rating was unloading a bottle of it for $29.99! A quick look at his page revealed that he also had a bottle of Vetiver Geranium for the same price!

    Hey....it was late....
I pulled the trigger on both bottles.

My hopes is that this experience wasnít a total waste of money and others can learn from my mistake.

    What to look for
Price this should be the top indicator that you are about to be had. However it seems that no matter how many times weíve heard ďif it seems to good to be trueĒ we are always pulled in by the prospect of a ďdealĒ

    Packaging
My 2 new bottles came fresh with sleeves around the box. Iíve never heard of creed putting sleeves around their boxes. The originals I purchased from Maxaroma certainly didnít have one.

*** If Iím wrong on any of this feel free to correct me as I am not a pro, Iím simply making a side-by-side comparison between a known reliable retailer and a purchase on eBay ***
If there has been a bottle change, sprayer change, reformulation, or other please let me know.

The Original in the below photos will be listed as A and the presumed fake will be listed as B
    The sleeve

    ECFDF848-FA7E-480B-81DF-82A53A165F16.jpg

    The box
The authentic Creed box has much more texture and depth where the other has more of a light ďorange peel effectĒ
    084A9628-140D-4566-B912-4975F3CFAEE6.jpg
    Notice the raised leafing.
An original creed Acqua Orignale box should have elevated gold leafing....youíll notice that the presumed replica is almost flat to the box.
    5DEE1BA7-E923-4E4D-B8DF-D90DF795B425.jpg
Also pay attention to the detail in the font. The Creed logo on the original is crisp and sharp where the box in question is slightly less.

    Sticker/batch #
The original has the sticker with the lot and batch numbers on it. The assumed fake is printed directly on the box.

    The Inserts
Again with the texture of the card stock.
The original is much more textured and has a much nicer leafing
    0442ED6E-A087-4052-8A5B-5EF1AAE9D684.jpg

The other insert on the original has a beautiful gold leafing on both the logo and on the tabs identifying the different languages itís written in. The suspected imposter is printed with a goldish brown ink.

    The bottle

    Sprayer
The original sprayer comes off fairly easily. It has a diameter of 12.5 mm. Shoots like a fire hydrant
The suspected fake is darn near impossible to get off. It has a diameter of 13.5 mm. Very light mist released

    The nozzle
    Totally different

Tube connection and tube are totally different as well

    68A5E5C6-EDDB-482D-8489-A952E115C9A7.jpg

    Collar
There is a ring on the collar of the atomizer on both. The ring on the original has a 2mm spacing from top of bottle. The fragrance in question has a noticeable 3mm spacing

    Cap
Details on crest pop on the known original. The end flowers are hollow and without detail on the other.

    Cap weight
    Original.05 ounces 15grams. The unknown .04 ounces 14grams

    Sloppy blue glue.
Though Creed is known for poor quality control Iíve never seen blue glue on a cap before.
    See pic above

    Crooked badge
    A763C010-44D7-4F35-8C2A-96EB57A302DE.jpg

    Back
Acqua Orignale logo on original clean and crisp. Suspected fake not as clean with a smudged looking u.
    6435D5D8-2CA1-4ED4-AE57-874AA8BA182D.jpg

    Bottom
The known genuine has a much cleaner, more crisp, compact, and precise font where the imposter offers a bigger, bulkier, font that is more spaced out. Has an unpolished look
    6CEF2A94-CF16-4E27-88AB-DE827F65AC2F.jpg

    Smell
    Should be a tell tale.
While I shamefully have been quite enjoying the smell of the fake Vetiver Geranium. Iím not getting the aquatic notes mentioned. Feels more like a strait forward Vetiver/patchouli combo.

The Cedre Blanc is a half strenghth effort with no detectable ambergris and much less present Woods. Not the same fragrance I fell in love with.

again, I hope this helps. Kind of also hoping that someone would say there has been a packaging and bottle change along with reformulation LOL
Too many red flags for that Iím afraid

    Holy cow OP!
Most detailed comparison of a fake I have ever seen.

I am familiar with this issue with the Acqua Originale. Some back story: Creed recently did change the packaging on these...the new bottles have gold caps as presented on their website. The 'old stock' was supposedly pulled from retailers and shipped to wholesalers. Fakers took advantage of this to make fakes.

I'm no expert but yeah looks like a definite fake. I've never seen a real Creed with a sleeve to start with.. plus all the other tell tale signs you list and of course the price. DOH!
I'm pretty sure ebay will refund you though

Someone else mentioned this in another thread. Felt that the price was too good to be true.

This is going to be a really useful post for our readership. Going to move it to the correct board for spotting fakes etc: “Perfume Appraisals” and will also make it a sticky.

    Thanks for this OP!!

I have a gold cap Cedre Blanc and it’s phenomenal.
The difference in smell (and strength) between the gold cap Cedre Blanc and this white capped is what prompted this post.
They smell similar but certainly not the same....like everything is amped down. The performance is night and day..

If it’s a batch variation it’s huge. If it’s a reformulation it’s the first that I know of that drastically improved the fragrance.

I’m wearing the Vetiver Geranium in the Pics and I’m having a hard time believing it’s a fake. It’s developed quite beautifully on my skin.

It’s got me second guessing my analysis.

Considering the packaging change you mentioned is it possible that these are in fact real and I received some older stock with a different packaging or are there to many other things to overlook?

I hate to say it but the Vetiver Geranium smells really good

What do you guys think looking at my pics?

Thanks....but I may be mistaken. Could possibly be a case of new packaging and reformulation.

The Vetiver Geranium smells really good.

I’m wondering if they reformulated the Cedre Blanc for the better when they went to the gold cap bottles?

The Cedre Blanc I have that I know to be genuine has a gold cap and it’s wonderful.

The one I presumed was fake has a white cap. It an amped down (nothing special) type scent. Most people feel the same about Cedre Blanc to begin with. I’m wondering, since I bought the gold cap (newer) version first and Loved it, is there a chance that the one I got from eBay was an older and more underwhelming version?
