If the journey were to end immediately, would be content with the classics I have discovered and rediscovered:

Acqua di Parma Colonia; Chanel Pour Monsieur, edt; aramis classic; Dior eau sauvage, edt; Issey Miyake, L'eau D'Issey Pour Homme

These are some scents that have evoked that feeling along my journey:

Nio: I've reached the pinnacle of the citrus genre. All other citruses are moot.

Acqua Viva: The pinnacle of lemons, specifically.

Sel Marin: My quest for an impeccable aquatic is over.

Menthe Fraiche: My favorite singular note, in perfect form.

Tabac Rouge: There's no need to seek a "gourmand tobacco" after this one.

Spice and Wood: I couldn't fathom a woods fragranced I'd enjoy more.

Green Irish Tweed: A mossy green masterpiece

Virgin Island Water: It doesn't get more tropically appropriate and on-the-money than this.

Invasion Barbare: A masterful combination of notes in a style that I love. The single best-smelling scent I've encountered.

Montale Vanilla Cake: The perfect vanilla gourmand.

Sycomore (the original EDT before reformulations): The ultimate vetiver (wish I never sold my bottle).

Eau Radieuse: Pushing the boundaries of futuristic freshness, nothing is colder, brighter or more radiant.

L'Air du Desert Marocain: The quintessential niche fragrance: Possesses (in many ways) the very best of what "niche" has to offer (creativity, quality ingredients, a more intimate connection to the product...a wholly unique composition).

Prada L'Homme: The end of the "white button down" quest. Clean, classy, composed, and sharp--it is an immaculate scent.

Carven L'Eau Intense: My personal, ultimate "dumb reach." It combines some of my favorite notes in a style that I can wear again and again and rarely get tired of, and for daily wear it suits my environment to a tee. In fact calling it a "dumb reach" does it a disservice. This is a really good scent that's just so easy and enjoyable to wear.

Paris*L.A.: The ultimate gourmand. This is a quirky composition, featuring an excellent Coca Cola note over macarons (not macaroons), hints of key lime pie, and a rich and buttery vanilla base. Somehow, it all comes together wonderfully, and the Cola note keeps it on the fresh, fizzy side making it all the more wearable. If I had to choose one gourmand, this would be it.

    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

    Castile

It's everything I could ever want, in one bottle. Casual. Formal. Clean. Sexy. Wear it to work, wear it on the weekend, wear it to the beach, wear it to the symphony. It's absolutely fantastic. And best of all, it is unexpected.

These days, just about every guy is wearing fake wood scents which have become the new generic dude-wearing-cologne smell. Go to a bar. You'll smell it. Go to a movie. You'll smell it. Shopping for groceries? You'll smell it. If you live or work in a highrise, you'll probably smell it in the elevator. Dylan Blue de Bleu de Blewer de darn near every designer recent release for men. That fake wood chemical incense smell is everywhere. It's being used in base after base after base base base, which means those scents may smell different when sprayed, but give 'em a few hours on skin and they all smell the same... and all of those dudes all smell the same.

Castile is a totally different kind of scent.
    It isn't aquatic.
    It isn't sporty.
It isn't that fake wood nonsense.
It isn't too loud, but it lasts a long time.
It isn't overtly sexual, the way something like Noir De Noir or DHI is. I do love NdN, but it can be over the top.

Nope. Castile isn't any of that. And best of all, it'll never catch on with the desperation dudes or beast mode bros, because Castile is sexiness with subtlety. It doesn't demand to be noticed, but when you do... ooh. The feedback I've gotten on it from women has been incredibly enthusiastic, but it's not a "wow" scent. It's more of a meaningfully inviting and intriguing scent.

I can't say enough good things about Castile.

Quite a few fragrances along the way gave me that blissful ‘A-ha!’ moment when you realised why you love this hobby so much. But after a while even these fragrances seem to lose a bit of that ‘first kiss electric spark’. Not unlike romance huh? That’s why for me the best part of it all lies in the pursuit, in the journey. And having the Basenotes community along on the journey makes it even more awesome!

Interesting question . . . not sure how to respond, really, but will have a shot. Basically these are 'milestones' on my 'journey' that I will never be without. I'll dispense with the obvious (most of Jacques Guerlain's classics) and stick to a few contemporary ones that are 'it' for me in their respective style or profile.

    Lutens - Arabie

It's spiced, woody, gourmand, fruits . . . the lot! And it's certainly got a Christmas Pudding (with sherry!) vibe going for it. I wear it at Xmas, it's fun and great in the cooler weather. Beyond all that, though, it has its own, unique character that's both uplifting and irreverent.

    Hermes - Vetiver Tonka

Comfort scent. I have a few 'straight' vetivers, all quite 'stern' and 'green', but this one is for mellowing out - I wear it whenever I'm flying - it helps me deal with the whole check-in, immigration, security check schtick before finally settling into my seat! Ellena has done here what Caron, Vero and others have done with the similarly 'green' and quite 'upright' lavender . . . warm it up, make it a bit friendlier.

    Miller Harris - Cuir d'Oranger

I was lucky enough to get a couple of bottles just after it was discontinued! The combination of a juicy deep citrus with leather is just perfect. Refreshing and solid at the same time.

    Auphorie - Miyako

Mind blowing. I am a fan of osmanthus (it features in several summer dessert dishes here in HK) but this takes it to a whole new level. The floral element is strong, deep, even muscular - not a bright halo around the edges, as in Daim Blond and others - and it is the 'leather' aspect which is contained and quite subtle. The 'flip' of the typical osmanthus / leather pairing is beautifully executed - a unique new piece of work.

Amouage - Homage (original white box)

Sublime rose painted across a deep blue sky - I'm not surprised it didn't last long, the formula must have cost a fortune. Nothing comes close.

    Amouage - Memoir Man

It's positively Heathcliffian. The mint and wormwood green-ness contrasted with the incense is masterly. It's almost as if you get to wander thru the trees and then you're suddenly left alone with the ashes after they've been torched. This one broods.

    Malle - L'Eau d'Hiver

Almonds and Apres l'Ondee warmed up a bit - it's a nod and wink to more classic 'barbershop fougeres' but with a restrained early 20c sensibility in the background. Pretty much a winter 'signature' for me.

Malle - Une Fleur de Cassie

Flappers with long cigarette holders, vamps - a 1930's salon in Paris. Nice to have such a time and place, 'Proustian' approach still out there (even though I wasn't around in the 30's, sadly - sounds like it must have been a lot of fun).

    Guerlain - Myrrhe Délires

This one is in the same ballpark as Idole EdT & Opus II for me. Basically a 'spiced fougere' kind of thing. Great kick-starter in humid weather.

    Guerlain - Attrape Couer

Another 'Proustian' thing. Bali, this time - sitting by the pool at night on the edge of dense tropical foliage, lots of night flowers pumping out languorous, heady scents. There's nothing else like this that I know of - floral, a touch 'oriental', oakmoss underpinning the 'scented garden for the blind'. Complex but also immediately feel-good.

    Tauer - LADDM

Exotic and unique. What more can you say, really? I grabbed a back-up way back before the bottle changed - dunno if it's still the same these days but one would hope so?

My journey is nowhere near its end... I say this because when I first encountered Timbuktu I thought I had finally found my last love, then I fell for Noir Extreme and before long I was completely swept away by Rose d'Arabie. Its extremely difficult to see the end coming at this point because what sparks my interest differs every now and then... today I might be into vetivers and tomorrow I'll be into rose/oud combos, the next day I'll be into incense or vanilla, its hard to tell what will be next.
