Default Chanel No. 19 Fitting For A Man?

I hear a lot about Chanel No. 19 and I wonder if a man could wear this especially for casual friendly occasions.

Already duely impressed with the masculine Antanaeus and Egoist. No. 19 seems brighter and more inviting perhaps.

    Watcha think?

I don't know how No 19 Eau de Parfum wears, but I wear No 19 Eau de Toilette, which is heavy with galbanum, quite cold and with a bite, rather than warm and casual and inviting! So perhaps the Eau de Parfum or the Parfum are the way to go.

Maybe Pour Monsieur Eau de Parfum would work as well - it's very classic, elegant, both bright and warm.

    I wear the vintage EDT.

It's a sharp green fragrance that I wouldn't say leaned in either gender direction.

If you like it, wear it!

As others have pointed out, it's quite green, and I find perfumes with green notes quite proper for men.

The EDT’s cool, dry and green profile makes it easy for a guy to pull off. But No.19 is one of Chanel’s more popular fragrances so there’s a chance women might recognise your worn scent for what it is. The EDP is rounder and a touch more floral. I find it leans a little further towards the feminine side compared to the EDT.

Not him so much as his dad, who visited from Sydney about 4x a year. Mel had a long conversation with my brother over the phone this year about his personal life which was disrupted by their bad divorce. Mel has improved much, sober now for over 10 years after having been pretty alcoholic. Much much better, and made that awesome movie Hacksaw Ridge which I own and have seen many times.

    In a word: YES.

All forms of 19 smell great on everyone, IMO. As Luca Turin observes (several times) in The Guide, many of the femme greats from the past were much drier in profile than today's gooey frosting-coated donut cupcake sugar bombs (and both men's and women's fragrances are sweeter these days), so (I'm paraphrasing here, but the way he puts it is funny) discerning guys raid their grandmothers' collections.

My own experience with putting No.5, No.19, Lanvin Arpege and Vc&A First on other people has taught me that (1) men's skin pulls the fragrances in a different direction almost immediately, and (2) the entire presence of a person, from their body, the way they dress, their voice--plus the unique mix of DNA, moisture, hair and microflora on everyone's skin--blend with whatever scent you're wearing, so that it's just part of your total presentation--unless you really pour it on; and, if you're doing that, you're probably not going out in publilc (I have completely different levels of acceptable scent volume for messing around at home vs. being around other people).

I wouldn't worry about someone else recognizing a waft of No.19 coming off of you. If it registers with someone, they'll just think, "wow, that smells great on him," and keep going. Who has the time and attention to spend more than a second or two on total strangers? And--more to the point, I guess--who even cares what goes through peoples' minds? We've all become so self-conscious about everything, and the truth is, I don't think most people even notice each other anymore . . .

Found a good deal today on the EDT... Something else... You mention on another thread the Prada Infusión line which I hear little about. Infusión d'Cedre best for the guys? Awesome, or so-so?

The Vetiver in Chanel No 19 is a siren call to men, and men rock it, I'm sure. I wear Terre d'Hermes sometimes. And not many young women wear No 19, they won't identify it. Chanel No 19 in all its forms is the most beautiful fragrance in the world, to me.

I feel that entire genre of green floral and/or leathery floral chypre from that time period has moved very much into unisex territory, especially since there has been a lot of modern synthetic masculine and unisex fragrances guys wear that actually smell more feminine to me than 19 or many of it's peers. Granted, you have to like brisk florals and dry bases to feel these (regardless of your gender), but a big resounding yes from me!

No, 19 in all its forms is totally unisex. The green leathery scent is a nice one for work and formal settings.

Nice continuing this thread... I tried a small bit of Bleu de Chanel EDT, as a masculine example, nice but wow, seeming more feminine than No. 19. Backing up what Zealot Crusader has to say.

Haven 't tried the BdCh Edp... Looking forward to No. 19 Edp and Pure Parfum!

No doubt! If it were released today, it would likely be a niche unisex release. I’ve worn it myself and have always felt comfortable doing so.

I'll just add that I've had more genuine unsolicited compliments (not the make believe "compliments" from Youtube reviewers) from wearing vintage No. 19 edt or parfum than just about any other scent I can think of - there is something about the leather/floral balance that is perfect on a man's skin. I'll come out and say it, but the vintage versions before the really big reforumulations are my real favourites. If you are terribly worried about pulling off No 19 as a man just give yourself a spritz of Lalique's Encre Noire and then apply the 19; for the more adventurous out there's a mix of Caron's Yatagan and No. 19 - that my friends is a match made in heaven.

It's the big synthetic in Bleu de Chanel which turns my stomach. But yes, if you can wear Bleu, or Dior Homme, or any of the clones of these then you can pull off No. 19 without blinking. Remember the next step is Cristalle .....

Unless you're (whoever) the typical insecure male who spends his whole life feeling the need to project an over-emphasis of masculinity in order to camouflage an incipient fear of homosexuality.
