Default Basenotes Posts from 2000 - 2003 now online here

Basenotes hasnít always been on these forums. As Iím preparing to move off of vBulletin to something new, Iím making sure all the posts that should be in the forums are here.
When the website began in 2000 the forum was run using a very simple threaded message board. It was quickly apparent that this wasnít suitable for site, so I looked for an alternative.

Iíd stumbled across e-groups, which was a forum/mailing list hybrid. Members could either come to the e-group website and post, or email directly to the list. E-Groups were acquired by Yahoo a few months after we started there and Yahoo Groups became our home from late 2000 until early 2003.

One thing I have had on my to-do list since 2004ish, was to convert all the messages from Yahoo Groups into the Basenotes Forums. It seemed a shame to not have all the messages in the same place, but there didnít seem to be an easy way to do it, and there was always something more pressing to do.

However, seeing as weíre updating the forum software system it makes sense to look at getting these old messages transferred so we can begin the new system with everything where it should be.

So over the last few weeks, Iíve been coding scripts to scrape the Yahoo messages. Then checking all the email addresses for the posters, and seeing if they have an account here, so I can tie up their usernames; and then doing lots of formatting to make the threads work.
So Iím pleased to announce that the messages from the very earliest days of Basenotes have now returned home, and you can view them here.

Iím going to eventually put the message is the correct forums they belong in, but thought is would be nice to have them in the same place if anyone wants to bring back a few memories.
Be aware that some of the messages will have strange formatting, and if Iím sure many of the messages wouldnít fit into the code of conduct we have for the site these days, but 18 years is a long time ó People have been born and are now nearly adults since those days!

We still discussed a lot about Creed (first message about Creed is here), though as this was pre-Aventus, the discussion was mainly about Millesime Imperial vs Green Irish Tweed.
    Which fragrances did we chat about? Well not just Creed ó big loves at the time seemed to be Casran by Chopard, Versace Dreamer, Mont Blanc Presence, Latitude Longditude by Nautical, Faconnable, and a lot of threads about 212 Men by Carolina Herrera. There was also discussion about whether or not there will eventually be a Light Blue for men (spoiler: there was);

Some of you will recognise some familiar faces from those days. Members such as CoL, agml65, cairomerta, Dane, evogel, GGA, iluvscent, martin, Prince Barry, Renato, Russlan, scentimus, The Bark, The-odor, stanmar and sjas1962 were regular posters then, and have still posted recently. Thanks guys! (Incidentally, anyone who posted on the Yahoo board has now had there join date amended to reflect when they actually joined, rather than when we moved from Yahoo)

Lastly, a big shout out to Ronbo, who was our very first moderator. Sadly, when we moved from Yahoo, he was no longer able to post as he relied on the ability to email his messages in.
Next on the list, thereís a big glut of threads from 2003 - 2006, which have lost their identifiers to the posts that belong to them, so connecting them up all again is my next job. Iíll post more about that when itís done

Grant, could you revive the April Fool's day homepage? It's provided a feel of what Basenotes would've been like if it existed in 1999!

I'm just hoping someone can find Hednic's fabled collection pics, once thought to be lost.

Back in the days when many of the rare discontinued unicorns we hold up as beasts of legend were just mere horses running in the derby alongside all the rest.

This one is a scream. One poster horrified because he knows someone who owns (gasp!) 33 bottles of cologne.

And even Grant, shocked to realize that he himself owns 28!

Interesting to see how attitudes and tastes have changed, but I think we can conclude that Creed has always been controversial.

Grant - thanks for all that retro nostalgia! It's from before my time on BN, but it's fun to dive into the archives and see how much simpler things were "back then." ;-)

I'm hoping there would be some threads that mentioned Creed in them. The early 2000s was a time when the now discontinued scents were widely available. There might be some discussions on some of them

I might merge them in with the main discussions at some point, though I'm sure we'll get some people responding to an 18 year old thread and wondering why the original poster hasn't replied to their question.

Yeah I need to fix all that, I must have done something wrong with the code

Ignore the views -- there was no record of how many times something got viewed so everything is basically set to (number of replies) minus 1.

With regards to the threads with no replies -- each time there was a subject change I started a new thread, though in reality, threads would go on for a long while, with people just changing the subject lines when the content had deviated
