Default "You smell drunk" - wifey's comment on me wearing A*Men Pure Malt

Hello, hope you all are doing good. :-)

I'm wearing A*Men pure malt today, and my wife happened to state that I smell "drunk" to her as soon as I walked out of the room. She was looking honestly puzzled as to why would I want to smell this way, but she's gotten used to me smelling like sawdust, fig leaves, metal, gunflint, oranges, tea leaves, agarwood and roses, apple pie, a clean linen, honey, cuban cigars, musk, etc. to name a few.

But it's the smell of pure malt that makes her question my life choices.

    A couple of takeaways:
    1. I'd only wear Pure Malt on those days that I know I'll go away on work, etc. as she wouldn't have to smell it on me if she doesn't enjoy it.
    2. Pure Malt is a really good scent, and it walks the talk by capturing the essence of some fine whiskey.

NB: If you're an enthusiast, your partner is going to develop an uncanny ability to distinguish notes in perfumes. In our case, the wife's nose has gotten trained over the years even though she's not into this hobby herself, and she is able to nail the key notes (as long as they're not exotic or unusual) on several perfumes. Not that you need to have a great nose to figure things out about pure malt, but I'm talking about several other scents.

So you can have a night out with the bros, drink until you lose the way home and then get back and not finding her mad at you. After all you are not drunk. You just overapplied Pure Malt.

    That's a plan.

Yes! My wife has developed quite a nose, too! It's fun to have a family member who gets fragrance, even if not as much as we do!

Strangely, although this fragrance has a quite distinctive but not overly strong nor aggressive malty note, but more on the caramel, vanillic, spicy rather than whisky-like side (thus not particularly similar to a high quality single malt, bourbon etc. apart from their more "non alcoholic" scent profil), did never perceive this particular scent as very boozy.

If anything, did manage to find quite a fair, numerous and diverse share of both designer and niche fragrances that smell far more boozy than Pure Malt to my nose (including but limited to Hammam Bouquet, several Boss Bottled and Baldessarini flankers, several Memo Paris releases), even if perhaps not that openly revealing and admitting their boozy side.

I've never had a comment that I smell boozy when wearing this. I have, however, had compliments from my better half and colleagues alike. Lovely fruity number with that A*Men DNA.

Interesting, despite the concept, I don’t find PM boozy at all.
The dense inherent sweetness makes sure to override any hint of it to my nose.
When I think of boozy, I think 1740 Marquis de Sade, or something like Patchouli 24
Which is far closer to the peat effect.

i guess it's preferable to " your fragrance is making me choke " which would be my main concern with wearing Pure Malt

I've been relegated to not wearing Ultra Zest because of a "Carmex" note perceived by my wife. She absolutely hates it so I too only wear it when I know she won't be subjected to it for long periods.

Much as I enjoy Pure Malt, for the life of me I don’t smell any whisky in it, or booze of whatever kind. It’s not even particularly smoky except maybe a hint at the very start. I do get that “plastic doll’s head” effect at one point in the development (an effect of tonka?), but I’ve come to like the whole for what it actually does, rather than the marketing framing.

Me neither. I recognize that note that scent fans call "boozy" - which is closer to like one of those flavoring syrups, or maybe a very sweet, low-alcohol liquor/brandy. Honestly, I've not smelled anything that smells like straight-up whiskey (yet). I'm not sure I'd wear such a thing anyway.

    "You smell drunk."

She says that like it's a bad thing.

Don't even think of purchasing Frapin 1270 if that's the case. This and PM are nice fragrances though.

My wife has told me that many of my favorite colognes smell too "powdery". Although I see her point with some, others do not have any such notes. As I have over one hundred to choose from, I have respected her wishes and have sold or traded many of those that she did not like. She does not seem to dislike my Pure Malt or some others that have boozy notes however.

Thank you, I must sample the Frapin 1270 then. Will of course wear it on those days while I go away on work, but try it, I must.

That would just about be the right thing to do. I've sold away a few as well, and I've about a handful bottles sitting that I need to list on ebay now that I think about it.

I never get complements that I smell 'boozy' whenever I wore Pure Malt.

Stay away from Gatsby by Pacoma... Your wife will have you walking the sobriety line and taking a breathalyzer test if you ever wore it

It’s a great fragrance, but it makes Pure Malt smell like bubble gum in terns “booziness.”

I agree with what you’d said; save it for business trips, etc.

Prada has a scent like that that’s real popular. I can’t remember the name but the dry down is pure powder! The juice is a light color. Prada Homme maybe?

OK, now I'm gonna *have to* test Gatsby by Pacoma. Thanks for the suggestion. :-)

From a personal viewpoint, based on a very subjective perception, yes-like a very boozy rose, almost as if a quite sugary but also spirituous rose liqueur is turned into/rendered by a fragrance

It is definitely Prada L'Homme. I can't handle powdery scents at all. I have had to get rid of L'Homme and Creeds Royal Oud because of it.
