    Default Cigarettes and Motor Oil

No, it’s not the latest Jo Malone.
Just that Zealot Crusader’s recent ‘Too good to wear’ thread somehow got me thinking about scents associated with the dearly departed. You see my loving dad (God bless his soul) died in an oil tanker fire when I turned seven and the only scents I remember him by were cigarettes and motor oil.

Cigarettes and motor oil. Is there any particular fragrance I could seek out?

Layer Versace “The Dreamer” or Vermeil for Men with the oil listed below and you may have it

CDG had a few inspired by the motor oil part (eg Garage, Tar) but I don't think there is the cigarette part.

This could be an inspiration for Laudamiel's next perfume.

Proust says it best: "But when from a long-distant past nothing subsists, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered, taste and smell alone, more fragile but more enduring, more unsubstantial, more persistent, more faithful, remain poised a long time, like souls, remembering, waiting, hoping, amid the ruins of all the rest; and bear unflinchingly, in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection.”

I wonder if layering something like Oud Wood Intense with, say, Tobacco Oud (the original) might get close. That strong castoreum note in OWI veers toward motor oil-ish imo.

Chiseled Face Midnight Stag EdP has the motor oil accord down.

Layer it with their Sherlock EdT, maybe?

I have completely forgotten about CdG. I’ll find a sample. I think tracking the motor oil aspect is probably easier than the cigarette bits.

Proust was indeed insightful. Thanks for that thoughtful quote. I quite like Tobacco Oud but iirc it has little in the way of smoked cigarettes. Have yet to smell Oud Wood Intense.

+1 for CdG Garage. but be careful! it's too realistic. it's nothing like BLACK for example, which is strange, but still a wearable perfume. with Garage, you'd smell like a dirty & sweaty car mechanic. literally. that's not a good smell. as a "perfume", it's disgusting. you only need a few ml's of it, just to sniff it, whenever you want to activate a scent memory imho

I agree with NickZee. Please try L'Oudh by Tauer. It def has the motor oil thing going on.

Both of the Gucci Guilty Absolute fragrances (Pour Homme and Pour Femme) have substantial heavier petroleum notes to my nose, as noted in my reviews. Cigarettes - maybe - depends how you interpret the rest, but both scents were apparently originally inspired by cognac, cigars and leather.

Oh yes, I’m big on vibe! This has been on my must-try list for the longest time. But I heard it’s been reformulated? Still good??

Worth a sample I’m sure, just not a larger decant. Maybe layer it with something else?

Ooh. Pushing this Tauer up to the top of ‘To-try next’ list.

I have the Pour Homme. Yes it has a little of that floral-smoky sweetness of petrol but not quite the motor workshop scent of grease and engine oil. Still an awesome wardrobe addition. Have yet to smell the Pour Femme version though.

How about layering some of ELDO Jasmin et Cigarette with vintage Fahrenheit...?

I love the smokiness and motor oil of Tauer’s L’Oudh, but it’s not cigarette smoke, so that’s a completely different vibe. The motor oil part though is spot on.

I concur with remik that the most realistic cigarette smell is ELDO Jasmin et cigarette. But then this perfume has clean jasmine, so as far as possible from motor oil. But who knows, layering may work.

You get cigarettes out of Or Black? Interesting... I haven't worn this one in 3+ years so my memory is weak on it, but I don't remember it having that particular note. Time to pull out my bottle and give it another go.

I would second Or Black, but more for the "motor oil" part, than the "cigarettes" part, in its current formulation. I have not had the chance to try the vintage, which I assume must be sublime.
