    Question Cheap Alternatives to Oud/Agarwood

    Hi All!

In the perfume I am making, I need a note that is very deep, smooth and rounded, kind of like oud. There are two problems however that I have with oud. Firstly it is too expensive, and secondly I find that oud has a somewhat medicinal smell.

Is there a natural oil that has the deep, smooth and roundness of oud without the medicinal/middle-eastern qualities? Something that could add lots of depth and roundness to sweet fruity notes?

    Thanks for your help!

There is Cypriol (Nagarmotha), it's not exactly the same type of smell though, and is said to smell like very inferior oud, although there are also some other aspects to the smell.
It's also just a little bit myrrh-like, with a very slight medicinal smell and a bit leathery, but to a much lesser degree than myrrh. I know you expressed some concern over the medicinal smell aspect, but with cypriol it is to such a very small degree you wouldn't notice it, and it would be some of the other aspects to the smell that would be more concerning to you.

(If you really dislike pine tar or patchouli though, I don't think you'd like cypriol)

    Get a synthetic oud.
No other natural smells like real agarwood.
Agarwood co2 is not too too expensive

If it must be natural try spikenard with natural woods like cedar and sandal.
if it can be synthetic try Firmenich Oud 10760E

I agree with Jeroen, I find Firmenich Oud 10760E is VERY GOOD!
It`s SUPER complex and very nuanced...It has multiple facets.

It has honey, leather and urine, and it has fruits and petrol notes too.
It smells pretty darn similar to some decent, real oud oils.

    Naturals?
Meh... its too hard to compare agar wood to anything else.
    It`s just so complex.
