I had found a couple of purchases from circa 2002 that were perhaps 15% left in the bottle had started to turn around 13-15 years. By "turn," it was that the top notes were off and fleeting. The overall effect lasted a few minutes, but as the fragrance segued into its mid-notes, it smelled fine. Also, it's as if the ambergris-signature base note was more pronounced upon initial application, too, giving the fragrances a bit of a salty smell. The two I recall specifically were SMW and GIT.

I noticed this only in Millesime Imperial, my bottle was from 10 years ago. The top notes were indeed fleeting lasting only minutes before moving to the mid notes. The rest of the scent was intact.

To add to this conversation. I have 2 bottles of aventus... one from 2015 and one from 2017... both purchased this year. Despite the batch variations, both are fruity batches and quite comparable in performance... when i did a side by side comparison i noticed that the 2015 bottle appeared to have the same sort or deterioration of top notes that i smelled in my GIT & SMW, although, the deterioration was not perceptible in my 2015 bottle until i did the side by side comparison. It was only slightly rougher and duller than the 2017 bottle.

I know it's deterioration as opposed to batch variation because it shares the same profile that my GIT & SMW have, only to a lesser degree.

So i figure i have 2-3 years before it turns into a mess that i will no longer enjoy wearing.

How amazing that you’re experiencing 3 ruined bottles of Creed when most report never having such a problem.

Maybe your VIW & Himalaya are ruined also but you just don’t know it yet.

Wow, that's terrible news. My mother has a bottle of perfume that she wore in high school (she's 60), and it still smells fine. My oldest bottle is maybe 12 years old, and smells perfect. I haven't had one go bad yet. I don't keep them in their boxes, but I do keep them in a cool dark room in my house.

@RedRaider... was that an attempt at humour?

I never said my bottle of Aventus was ruined, I said it was showing signs that it would head down the same path as my GIT & SMW

Yes, how amazing that your luck with the majority of your Creeds has been completely unlike what most experience.

Silver Mountain Water is the only Creed that I had that "went off". The Creed representative at the Neiman Marcus that I frequent was kind enough to replace it - the bottle had very little use so it confused her as well how it could have happened. It was stored properly, never in the sunlight, was darker (in scent) and inkier (that note was amplified) and a bit more pungent.

Replaced that bottle and nothing wrong with the replacement bottle years later. I just think it was a one-off incident but seems to be something worth investigating.

Now that I think of it, my original bottle of MI with the gold-plating I purchased around the same time had the same issue. In that particular instance, it was almost like there weren't any top notes at all (no melon freshness.)

I should add, these were all bought early 2000's before "batch codes" and Creed itself was a thing. I cannot be certain how old the stock was nor how long it sat on a shelf before I received them.

You didn't bother reading any of the other posts? Seems I'm not the only one having the experience with creeds.

If you want to pay postage I'm happy to send over a sample of GIT and SMW. I'm happy to put my money where my mouth is.

Actually, I have been reading the posts on the thread and the majority say they have never had a problem, even with Creeds that are many years old.

Yes, there are a few that have experienced a problem with maybe one bottle going off, but not many. Certainly not 60% (3 out of 5) of the bottles you own.

As I said, it's amazing that you've had such bad luck. That's certainly not the norm with Creeds (or any other fragrance). Fragrances can last decades if properly cared for.
