Default Santal Sultan by Ensar Oud

I am interested in this one - it's not cheap ($350 / 3 ml) but the little I've read about it online makes me curious to smell it.

    Any Basenotes members own/sample this?

There's a great review of it on the blog Kafkaesque: http://www.kafkaesqueblog.com/2017/0...santal-sultan/

Overall my favourite of the Ensar Samples I've tasted. Nicely balanced, layered, Oiliness. It is free of Vanilla sweetened lactose and centers to a deep nuttiness, accented with a slight Citric. Match it with a pin prick of Rose Otto or CO2 and well Amb rose Jee Ya.

I own this. Not a sandalwood buff but also own Sandal 100k by Feel Oud and that is my only comparison. The EO is richer and deeper. As mentioned, a bit more oily feel to it. I can’t imagine a pure sandalwood oil could get much better. Let me know if you want a sample.

    My pleasure.

I have found that, my samples of Sandalwood Oils vary. I am drawn to the oils where the distiller has brought out a Nuttiness. My memory base-line of Mysore was, a small sample owned by my Grandmother. It was from the 60's and she had told me the story, of it being offered to her by a SA, at a Chanel roadshow, in the U.S. Undoubtedly it was a blend of different stocks and perhaps even adulteration to meet a Chanel Standard.
As to the differences of Feel-Oud 100k and Santal Sultan. My suspicion, is, that the Feel-Oud is, younger, closest in purity, by it's nod to an Ethereal Quality. The Sultan speaks, to me, as a careful Blend, to accentuate an Earthly quality, much like the Chanel Mysore of the 60's.
Both samples bloom when introduced to a Rose Otto or CO2.

What you are currently wearing, the Bortkinoff has a bit of the 100K or something similar, in the mix.

    kswer, thanks

purecaramel - I know the nuttiness you're talking about (some people call it peanut shells). I like that facet but I think what's most attractive to me is a lactic, almost yogurt-like smell. That usually is what gets my attention. Still..that can change. Recently I smelled an Australian, Sri Lankan and Indonesian sandalwood (at Enfleurage) and I liked all 3! So I guess I'm totally non-monogamous when it comes to sandalwood.

I forgot to say that I have a sample of this and I've worn it once. It's so good. Yes there is a nuttiness there but it's infused with highly sharp resinous wood notes. It also is very radiant for the 1st couple of hours. Surprised me. I will wear it again this week and give it a proper review.

    Yes,
I would have been wiser to have blown my credit rating with a 3ml of this Santal Sultan rather than a "Pig in a Poke" Tabac Blond this month. We'll see.

Comparing the FeelOud 100k and Santal Sultan side by side at the moment, the 100K is the more ethereal, surely. The Ensar has an earthly resin-ence. Both are lovely and have my palate salivating.

Oh yes. This Avatar I was encouraged to take by Norstrum, I think. And a group of women headed by ClaireV teased me into it. It sticks now. My Basenotes friends wouldn't be able to to identify my nonsense quickly, alone.

I also bought a sample of Santal Royale by Ensar Oud. I like it almost as much as the Santal Sultan. It's very mentholated when you put it on with a slight whiff of leather that fades quick enough and then dives head first into straight up Mysore sandalwood notes. According to EO this is 30-40 year old sandalwood but it was distilled like 5 years ago. It's so satisfying. I will have a hard time deciding which one to get. To get both is quite a lot of money for two (2) 3 gram bottles = $700!

I have not. But it's not cheap by any means. $80 for 1 ml (or 1/3 gram) or like $240 for 3 grams.

I'm not familiar with this distiller at all. Are you powdernose?

I'm not familiar with his work yet,
but you can follow info on his distillations here:
    http://www.ouddict.com/threads/mysor...istilling.718/
You'd probably get feedback on the items too if you looked them up there.

I'm waiting on a sample of Aluhlaza, looking forward to trying it.

    Still cheaper than this

I own Inkanyezi pure sandalwood oil and Euphoria (Inkanyezi sandalwood, frangipani, ancient ambergris) attar. Both are amazing. Not cheap. I ordered them blind after Taha from Agar Aura highly recommended anything made by tyson.
    These oils do not disappoint.

I really enjoyed the sample of Santal Sultan that I wore. It is one of the most radiant sandalwoods I've ever had the chance to have on my skin. Yes, it has that peanut-shells-nutty-cardboard facet to it that is sort of unique, but I found it oddly comforting. The oil isn't as creamy as I normally gravitate towards, but I was able to accept that because the smell was amazing regardless of it's more dry texture.

If price was not an option I would own several bottles of this. Serious.

As it is...I have not bought a bottle yet.

UPDATE: It is showing as sold out on his site and on Luckyscent. Oh well...to all who own a bottle - enjoy!!
