Question Date Night Recommendation-- what next?

On quest to find the perfect date night scent that is 10/10 for her but not embarrassingly gaudy to 47 year old conservativish me. Here is what we've tried thus far with her scores and feedback:

    • What We Do Is Secret Monoscent G - 7/10 "No kick"
    • What We Do Is Secret Monoscent E - 1/10
    • Comme des Garcons #2 - 9/10 "Almost the one"
    • Eccentric Molecules 01 - 8/10 "It's got spice"
    • Perfums de Nicolai New York - 3/10 "Powdery"
    • Taur Au Coeur du Desert - 9/10 "Calms down nice"
    • Taur L'Air du desert marocain - 6/10 "comforting"
    • Dior Homme - 7/10 "manly"

Also, previous women have highly liked YSL L'Homme Libre on me. But I found myself rushing to shower the morning after.

I have settled on Coeur du Desert for now. It's initial kick is too strong for my tastes but it does settle down nicely. And I can enjoy my coffee the next morning without urgently needing a shower first. I highly suspect there are sweeter mainstream scents that she would rank 10/10 that are more suitable for a younger, less traditional men. "The" cologne that's a homerun for her and solid double+ for me might not exist, but I shall nevertheless continue the search.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

CDG 2 (man I assume), which is rated as almost the one, is vetiver plus incense. In a similar vein, Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu. Or try one of the two materials in isolation. For incense, Armani Bois d'encens, for vetiver, Chanel Sycomore.

Obviously I don't see that or I wouldn't have asked. No worries though--the Admins probably have a "newly registered users" group with more limited permissions. It is not high priority.

Thanks to all for the replies. Special shoutout to Cacio for the detailed explanation. Much appreciated by this rookie trying to learn.

Dior Homme Intense is mentioned several times. If Dior Homme is 7/10 why would Intense have a hope of being 10/10? Forgive me if this is a dumb question as I have not compared the reviews yet, but will do so shortly.

I am not interested in a scent that projects across the room, being of the school of thought that colognes should be discovered and not announced. Perhaps people are thinking that stronger projection is needed when thinking of Intense? If so, the woman is SOL because I won't be that guy.

Just try DHI, worn lightly, and you will hopefully understand.

I'm not sure which version of New York you own, but I would humbly recommend that you sample Nicolai New York Intense.

In my opinion, it's a perfected version of the original. Not powdery at all to my nose. It retains the best facets of the original, while introducing, and amplifying new facets.
I agree with your girlfriend (?) that the original is a bit "powdery." But, you need to sample the Intense version. Trust me on this one, and thank me later, lol.

No worries, it's not a dumb question.

Dior Homme Intense is like a heavier, richer and slightly darker Dior Homme. It's excellent, but I sold my bottle because it was too heavy for my tastes.

You and I think along the same lines. To me, there's a difference between smelling good and needing everybody in the room to know I smell good. If a scent projects out further than an arm's reach, that's too much for me. In fact, I prefer half that distance.

Most guys make the mistake of thinking they need monster projection all the time. Read any of the date threads and you'll always see people recommend scents that wear like an air siren. I'm not that guy. For an intimate evening with a date, big projection is what I DON'T want. I tend to take a more gentlemanly approach.

Above, sjg3839 recommended Creed's Royal Oud. That's phenomenal advice. I'd also recommend you sample 1725 by Histoires De Parfums.

1725 is like two scents in one bottle. It presents itself in the air as being a barbershop scent. Clean, charming, well dressed & well groomed. But up close, it smells flirty & perhaps a bit mischievous. Whereas a scent like DHI screams "I'M TRYING TO BE SEXY!", a scent like 1725 just is sexy without needing to announce it. It's like the difference between a guy who tells people he's sexy versus a guy who just is. That being said, I like DHI a lot. It's excellent. But there's nothing subtle about DHI. I should note that 1725 is kind of powdery, but in a barbershop kind of way.

As for Royal Oud.... it's a quiet confidence sort of scent. I get far more cedar and sandalwood than oud, and it's marvelous. The opening can be a bit challenging, though I enjoy it, but within 20 minutes, once the top fades, it mellows to become one of the smoothest of the smooth. It smells masculine and confident but not at all showy or brooding. And it wears ridiculously well. I get only moderate projection but excellent longevity and versatility is through the roof.

On the designer side, I'd recommend Prada L'Homme.

A few other names to toss out there in case you're building a list to sample:
    Reflection Man by Amouage
    Endymion by Penhaligon's
Lumiere Noire by MFK, if you like rose
Original Vetiver by Creed, if you want something clean & green

...Really, though, my 2 picks would be Royal Oud and 1725
Current Favorites (in no particular order)
    Castile
    Rose 31
    Petit Matin
    Royal Oud
    Curve
    1725 Casanova
    Reflection Man
    Green Irish Tweed
    Hanae Mori H.M. EDT
    Tom Ford Extreme
    Les Exclusifs Eau de Cologne
    Terre d'Hermes Parfum
    Pomelo Paradis
    Interlude Man
    Aqua Universalis

Amouage Dia Man, non magnetic bottle...and that'll mic drop this thread I'm working a slightly different dating demographic than it sounds like you are and my style leanings are less conservative but this earns raves from the women who get up close to me. It gets next to no mention in day to day wear, I guess because the projection is minor, you really have to be in somebodies space for them to get it so date nights are it's wheelhouse and it delivers, or it has for me.

Done. I am a newbie just getting interested in this. The scents listed in my original post were samples.

I also own an additional YSL--possibly L'Homme. I am currently traveling and cannot check.

How does she feel about tonka bases? An option for you might be the Mugler A*Men line. Not a monster projection if you don't go overboard spraying, modern and sweet enough without being saccharine sweet, not powdery. Also you won't smell like a frat boy.
