Default Would you mind recommending me a fragrance, please?

Hello everyone, Zhang Fan here from China! I'm looking for a fragrance to wear, and was wondering if someone could please recommend me a fragrance which is suitable given my style, personality, and so on. I've tried to put the relevant information into bullet points for your convenience:

    - I'd like a fragrance which I can wear in different situations, (work, friends, girlfriend). So versatility is important, and I may not buy another one.

    - In terms of clothing, I'm pretty casual. My climate is hot and humid (tropical) so I rarely wear suits. Work attire is more like a polo and khakis.

    - Some words people often use to describe my personality: friendly, outgoing, polite, a little bit feminine. I'd like to get a matching fragrance.

    - We don't have as many fragrance options as in Western countries, but we have major luxury brands - Chanel, Dior, Versace, and so on.

    - I've tried a few fragrances, and I think my favorite was Bleu de Chanel eau de Parfum, but it's a little bit expensive. Dior Sauvage seemed similar.

    - I'd rather buy a women's fragrance or a unisex fragrance than something too spicy or "manly." I didn't really like Acqua di Gio, Armani Code, etc.

    - As far as women's fragrances, I tried Louis Vuitton Matiere Noir and it was interesting. It seemed pretty different from the other ones I've tried.

    - The last fragrance I had was Ralph Lauren Polo Double Black, I think it smelled good, but may have been a little bit "richer" seeming than I am.

Hopefully that is helpful! As for my budget, I think something around 150 US dollars is the most I'd want to pay, preferably somewhat less.

    Déclaration by Cartier
Narciso Rodriguez For Him Blue Noir
    Dylan Blue by Versace

Safe scents for work or play. All can be found for around $60 here, so I imagine they shouldn't much too much more in a store in China (around $100 usd, I'll assume).
    Most worn:

24 Ice Gold - is the unisex version of D&G Light Blue for Women. You might like it.

Givenchy Insensé - a floral for men with a subtly fresh fir tree note. Polite, but unusual and mysterious, too.

Also adding Mugler Cologne-very affordable and quite good in terms of versatility while remaining both inoffensive and classy, modern but also with classic hints, clean but also not generic/predictable in its skin development nor overall style

So versatility is important, and I may not buy another one.

Good luck with that! How about trying Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum, not the Depp-Sauvage.

If you can find it Diptyque Philosykos, it's a fig based scent great for warm weather climate.

Below are the descriptions from L’artisan site,

“Tea for Two is a dark smoky composition with lucidity and vibrancy of hues. It brings nostalgia for winter days with its memory of smoky lapsang souchong tea and a porcelain plate of spicy gingerbread cookies. Once the smoky tea evaporates, the spicy accord of cinnamon, anise and ginger is thrown into relief. Tea for Two is balanced by a drizzle of honey and base of vanilla that seeps through slowly. “

“Passage d’Enfer pays homage to the Parisian location of L’Artisan Parfumeur’s office in the 1970s. It conjures up images of chilled cathedral walls and echoes of rituals and incantations. Translucent lily and white musk sweeten the balsamic smoke of incense. Passage d’Enfer is also a wicked play on words, the symbolic “Hells passage”, a moment caught between two worlds. The name may be dark and unsettling, but the scent itself is tranquil and contemplative. “

Have you tried Pomelo Paradis? Don’t know if you have access to Atelier Cologne, or if it’s above your budget, but I get the feeling that you would love it. It’s well suited to your climate, and it’s very friendly (mass pleasing), polite (light and airy), and a bit feminine (soft).

I would second this opinion. Anything from Atelier Cologne will work for you (except the metal bottle line). I’d recommend clementine california or orange sanguine. In my experience pomelo paradis can get sour in the heat sometimes, but it is a killer fragrance. You also can’t go wrong with oud and bergamot from Jo Malone.

+1 for Atelier Cologne. They're marketed as unisex but personally, I found them to be leaning feminine. The problem is longevity - they only lasted two hours on me, and are expensive. They sell sample sets.

Another great unisex (leaning feminine) scent is Bal d'Afrique by Byredo but is over your budget.

Others unisex within your badget that you might like:
    Dior Homme eau
    YSL L'Homme
Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme

I agree with the longevity aspect. But I’m not sure that it is very different price wise from say Diors Sauvage.

A 60ml bottle of Sauvage retails at Sephora for about 77$ - that’s about 1.28$ per ml
A 100ml bottle of Orange Sanguine is about 135$ - that’s about 1.35$ per ml
That’s a price difference of about 0.07$ per ml.

Ofcourse Sauvage will require less juice for more effect. Still, I think atelier cologne is well priced for what they offer.

Thank you for your recommendations, everyone! I'm sorry I haven't posted an update for some time, but I decided to buy Bleu de Chanel EDP as my usual fragrance, especially for work, and also Dior Addict, which I can share with my girlfriend. I'm still planning on trying the fragrances that people have recommended on here as I come across them! Some of them sound really excellent!

I have another question, if you don't mind: in terms of having a fragrance collection, is there a type of fragrance I should look for that will complement the ones I already have? For example, I tried Versace Dylan Blue, but I think it's too similar to Bleu de Chanel, and I tried Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium, but I think it's too similar to Dior Addict. Is there a specific category or type of fragrance I should be researching, for situations where the ones I have would not be appropriate?

That's on my list of ones to try the next time I go shopping! By the way, I'm also interested in if there are some fragrances which are good for hot weather, but may not the usual aquatic/citrus type scents. I think I like "floral" or "oriental" fragrances, and someone told me I might like Prada L'Homme.

你好,欢迎光临 ZhangFan! I would echo the recommendation above for Mugler Cologne - it's a really nice fresh, clean floral scent that works well in hot weather. I have not tried Prada L'Homme but it also has neroli, so perhaps that would be another option for you.

Prada L'Homme one of my favorite and first loves! Lavender powdery and certainly unisex, but wears best on a man. If you enjoy that, Lunna Rosa Sport is a powdery lavender vanilla, a bit sweeter, but similar vibe. Enjoy!

A shame you didn't get one of the other Dior Hommes (Homme, Homme Intense, Homme Parfum) instead of the Cologne. It's probably the least of that line. But any of the Sport versions, Cologne, or Eau, are meant to be worn in hot humid conditions instead of a cooler climate.

I have searched the website my girlfriend ordered them from. I found that samples are available from some of the fragrances recommended here. Next time, I'll order them and tell you what I think! Of the fragrances you have recommended, they have:

    Cartier Declaration
    Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot
    L'Artisan Parfumeur Passage d'Enfer
    Mugler Cologne
Narciso Rodriguez for Him Bleu Noir
    Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme

So that might be the next group I order.

I have tried three of the fragrances. Here are my impressions:

Guerlain L'homme Ideal: too masculine for me. You can smell the leather and cherry clearly. That's interesting, but I don't think it suits me well. It's a little bit too peppery or spicy for me. I would consider suggesting this to an older and tougher person.

Versace Dreamer: a little bit like the Guerlain one, but not so strong. This one smells distinctive. It's also not really one I like, but I like it more than L'homme Ideal.

Y by Yves Saint Laurent: this seems similar to Dior Sauvage. Actually, I like that type of fragrance, but this one is a little bit too strong. And it's a little bit different to tell what you're smelling.

I was able to sample two of the fragrances you have recommended: Dior Eau Sauvage and Narciso Rodriguez Bleu Noir. I really like Eau Sauvage! And my girlfriend loves it, too. The other one was good, but I didn't think it was very distinctive. It might be too much like Bleu de Chanel, the first fragrance I bought.

I was able to test many different fragrances at shopping malls these days. Here are some I like:

    Dior Eau Sauvage
    Dolce & Gabbana The One
Hermes Terre d'Hermes Eau Tres Fraiche
    Kiehl's Original Musk
    Prada L'homme
Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de L'homme
