Grand Soir - 3 ml. Sweet benzoin, Tonka. It's thick and rich. It feels comforting and rather simplistic. Wonderfully blended. It smells like almost gourmandy (which I'm not really a fan of), but leaning towards inedible. Like a food flavored candle maybe. I'm sure this is going to be a winter only fragrance, as I could totally see it being cloying and heavy. Whenever I tested this one, if it was on my wrist while another fragrance was on in general it seemed to out perform with a smaller amount. Longevity is big, sillage is big.

I really ended up enjoying this one a lot. I've used it all up, and ordered a full bottle.

Your description of it sounds familiar from my experience of testing it. The base was so good, I was thinking about getting a bottle myself. When I tried it again later, I was surprised by how plain the opening felt to me. It develops well, which should make it fun to wear over the years.

Be careful with getting too attached to Grand Soir...there are newer reformulated batches being sold now which are nowhere near as rich, potent or complex smelling.

    Caron Third Man

I love the smell of cloves, and you should too, if you wish to appreciate this fragrance. Citrus blast, honestly doesn't smell great for the first 5 minutes to me. Kind of smells thin and generic. After 5 minutes it settles in to the skin and smells fantastic. Lavender, clove, citrus. Easily distinguishable. About 20 minutes in a beautiful coriander smell wafts up. This is the best part of this fragrance. It settles in to a smoky coriander/moss/vetiver. High quality.

I will say, that to me this smells cologney. You will smell like a cologne guy, maybe even a dated 80s cologne guy. One that has good taste, but one that smells a bit dated.

    Habit Rouge EDT

Initial blast smells like lemonade. But not sour. It is like smelling lemon juice, is it was made to be not sour somehow. Very pleasant. Once this fades a bit the more subtle rose is allowed to shine through. It is not a sweet jammy rose, but a more photo realistic rose, that does not take it to a feminine space. Fragrantica has 33 mentions of incense for this, but I get none. Cinnamon and sandalwood floating around in the blend, more apparent the later you go. Performance is fine, not stellar, not weak. Standard EDT format. Projection middling. I would put this projection right in the sweet spot, and longevity in the slightly underwhelming for my tastes.

Smells really good. Not dated. Masculine. Rose flavored lemonade.

    Heritage EDT

This one poses a problem for me right away. I just don’t know what I’m smelling. Lavender with some herbs I can’t distinguish. It is beautifully blended, seamless. A bit in I started to smell some citrus. I kept thinking I was smelling coriander, but didn’t think it was in the notes. A little later I was sure it was an unlisted note, so I had to go check, and lo and behold, it is there. Nose proud! More of a mature scent, though not dated in my opinion. Classy as s***. Performance, ideal edt. Longevity good. Projection polite, but not weak.

    L’Instant de Guerlain EDP

Lemon chocolate powder. Not a milk chocolate sweet gourmand. More like unsweetened baking cocoa mixed with lemon juice. The patchouli rounds this out with a bite of earth. Some sandalwood gives this a sort of fuzzy feel. Performance, again ideal. Longevity good, projection hits the sweet spot. Can tell this one is an EDP vs the EDTs of the others. It is just a bit stronger all around.

    House Guerlain

I did not have any experience with this house, and could not find it anywhere to smell, hence the samples. I decided to get Habit Rouge, L’Instand de Guerlain, and Heritage. I probably should have included Vetiver, but thought that I might get a decant of that one instead in the somewhat near future, maybe when the season turns. My impressions on the house in general after testing these 3 scents:
These seem to be of the utmost class. They are just great fragrances, whether you like the notes or not. They seem to all have ideal performance (projection and longevity both) for their respective concentrations. Reference material for how scents should behave in each concentration. It is easy to see why they are so lastingly popular. The Guerlanade is real. It is a staple running through each product, and can be sensed in all of these. You can tell they are all from the same house, bearing the house signature. They all seem to be not formal, but not casual either. Probably not sweatpants and tshirt scents. Maybe business casual is my interpretation. Seems like they would be suitable for temperate climates. Say maybe 32 degrees F to 80 degrees F. Any warmer and their strength would make me think they should be applied with restraint. Any colder and the citrus would feel out of place.

    50ml D'Ambiguite by Marlou

Wow. This is animalic. I've been trying animalics for a bit, but this is the most challenging I've come across. In fact, this is the first one I would hesitate to wear in public. It smells like a zoo exhibit. Not neccesarily like feces or urine. I live in cold weather climate, and the zoos must bring their animals indoors for the winter. This smells like a cross between the African animal building, and the nocturnal animal building. Not overly sanitary, but not the rotting corpse some seem to think. Reminds me a bit of Leather Oud in its barnyard feel, though I haven't done a side by side, it evokes the same feeling to me. It is definitely strong. Hours later it is pounding. Straight forward, not much evolution.

I've tried both of the Marlou scents now. They are both high quality. I'm impressed. This is what they wanted to make, and l'animal was the nice version that anybody could wear. Can't say FBW for either, though L'Animal has grown on me.

Probably went a bit overboard this time, but I was low on new smells it felt like. All said, cash investment in this order after shipping was just under $50.

Received first 9 of these. Initial impressions on first sniff:

Zoologist Beaver - Expected more castoreum, less floral.
Zoologist Rhinoceros - First time I've ever recoiled from a fragrance. Yeesh!
Zoologist Civet - Expected it to be pissier.
Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex - Aggressive. Smells like burning plastic. Strongest of the bunch.
Cartier Declaration Parfum - Seems super light. Nose must be blown out.
Bortnikoff Bonheur - Favorite of the bunch. Smells expensive.
Bortnikoff Mysterious Oud - Very oudy. Slightly medicinal.
Areej le Dore Baikal Gris - Middle of the pack. Probably need to suss out more here.
Areej le Dore Inverno Russo - Seems pretty light. Was expecting more musk.

All from smelling the dipstick only. Nothing sampled as of yet, so take it with a grain of salt.

I was dropping similar money on sample orders every other month or so for a couple years from around 2014 to 2016.

As my collection grew, I got more into sample swapping.

    Cartier Declaration Parfum

This is my first smell of any of the Cartier fragrances. It smells different, but I just was not ultimately super impressed. Leather fragrance. Cardamom, cumin, and fake cedarish wood all mix together in such a way so that no one stands out, in a non-positive way. Oriental leather. The cumin is not the sweaty stinky variety, which is a positive. There are worse things in the world. It is not disgusting and does not stink. It does not make me want to wear it either, though. I had indeed blown my nose out when it arrived, but it is not very powerful. Doesn't seem to project hard, which can really be a plus for me, but did not last that long either, which is a huge negative. Feels more like an EDT.

    Zoologist Beaver

Quite obviously from the get-go I got the 2016 reformulated version, which does not seem to align as well with my tastes. It is a floral airy watery concoction. It is noticeably soapy, coming from a cleansed version of laundry musk. Easy to wear, but lacking in character. A few hours in I am able to smell the castoreum, but it is faint. Still a bit player in this fragrance. I would have thought, if you said a beaver smell, it would be castoreum, musk, wood, leather, water, in that order. Instead what we get is flowers, water, soap, and castoreum. It doesn't smell bad, and could maybe stomach it from a designer brand, but I had higher expectations from Zoologist. Performance is good for a floral. The white musk lingers.

    Zoologist Rhinoceros

This one was challenging for me. Not in the normal challenging way that it does not smell good. This just took me a couple samples to understand what I was thinking. It is leather, strong, and in your face. This one is not playing around, and is far from the common fare. No sweetness here. There is a medicinal quality that I thought at first maybe was a facet of the fake oud, but it turns out it was wintergreen. Wintergreen and leather is the basic definition of what we have here. There are background players of little booze, and little smoke. I applaud this creation. This truly feels like a rhinoceros themed fragrance to me. I totally get it. The longevity and performance in general suffer from its bombastic opening, and I'd saw 1-10 they are a 4 on both, with the caveat that it opens for the first hour at a projection 10.

    Terre d'Hermes EDT

The overall impression is dirty orange/grapefruit. It's filled out with cedar and pepper. Drys down to a dry cedar vetiver. I assume this one has been reformulated from its heavier early days. I get moderate longevity, and low/moderate projection. More of a summer scent to me. Better than average

    Terre d'Hermes Parfum

The overall impression here is STILL... a dirty orange. The original is well known, so I will give my impressions after a arm by arm comparison. Openings are similar. Similar feel. The parfum does not feel as dry, less vetiver. There is some fake wood/incense/ambroxan something or another in the background of the drydown that I particularly like. It leans orangier than the edt. Stays stronger longer. At 6 hours both smell similar again. I like the parfum version more than the edt.

    Ultra Male

This is a sweet strong bomb. It smells really good. Jelly Belly jellybean pear (which coincidentally is my my favorite jelly belly), is the opening. Mix that with vanilla and amber and you have the feel. I wore it yesterday fully as my scent of the evening and it radiates pretty hard. Today, I wore Code Profumo as my SOTE, because I feel like they are in the same ballpark, strength and profile, and Ultra Male makes it so that if I smell Ultra male on my wrist I smell nothing from Profumo on the other. It is a wholly synthetic fragrance, which doesn’t bother me, but can turn others off. I’m not a club scene guy, but if I were this would be a strong option. Dry down loses its pear a bit and is more of a fading vanilla amber ambrox. I already own Profumo and Eros, and this doesn’t bring enough to the table to move me to to want a fb.
