    Default Monthly Samples

So, I'm pretty excited for them to get here. My wife suggested I join a scent sampling service such as scentbird, but after looking at the choices, and specifics, I decided that if I wanted to spend money for monthly trials, I could pick them myself from other sites, and have a much bigger selection, albeit of much smaller quantities. I welcome any input or discussion on the forthcoming samples, and will definitely post my fledgling opinions on each scent as they come.

    This month:

Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP -

    Amouage Jubilation XXV -

Tom Ford Private Blend Tuscan Leather -

    Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur

Good, diverse choices. Tuscan leather is a good straightforward leather; discussions abound on whether it is preferable or not to Ombre leather, which was recently released for wider distributin (eg Macys and Sephora). Jubilation XXV is an excellent incense. Musc Ravageur is nicely dirty up top, then it becomes smoother and spicier.

TL smells more like a smoking cigar's ashtray to me than leather.

If you like it, check out "Rasasi La Yuqawam". It smells almost exactly the same. I actually prefer it over TL, regardless of price.

Arrived this morning. Initial impressions; all interesting. 3 beauties, and one that does not agree with me. I do not enjoy the Tuscan Leather smell right off the bat. I will not jump to conclusions, as this is just on the first smell of the top, but not optimistic.

I wasn't too fond of TL either when I first smelled but my opinion has changed after wearing it a couple of times. It's probably one of the most challenging fragrances I've worn (I tend to wear safer/mass-appealing fragrances). It was really nice in the cooler weather and I enjoyed watching the puzzled expressions of some people faces.

Those are fun picks to get a sampling of some much-discussed fragrances. They’re all really interesting, but I don’t love any of them.

Jubilation XXV is probably my favorite of the group, but I like some other Amouages more (Memoir Man, Gold Man, Fate Woman).

Music Ravageur has had buzz for years, but it’s not one of my favorite Malles. I prefer L’Eau d’Hiver, Portrait of a Lady, Dans tes Bras, Une Fleur de Cassie, and a few others.

From MFK, Grand Soir has been my best sampling experience.

I’m not into Tom Ford’s Private line, but Tuscan Leather is one of the more interesting ones. It’s too much for me, though. It feels like it’s trying too hard, too thick and heavy.

Alright. I'm about 15+ hours into Tuscan Leather. I was not a fan of the initial smell, but it did grow on me. I didn't know about the whole Drake song, and the pop culture references to it. I guess I somehow missed that. I'm not a hip hop guy. The drydown I didn't feel was super different. Becoming used to smelling it, it smells unique. It smells male. The rasberries are there, but it is not overly fruity. I can understand people liking this fragrance. I reapplied 8 hours in and it is still kicking. I know I can still get wafts of it without burying my nose. Good/great performance.

Jubilation XXV today. About 9 hours into the wear. It is a pretty scent. Not sensual, or attractive, but rich and opulent. My wife thought it smelled good when asked. Someone asked me if I smelled incense. That is what this smells like to me. Straight incense. But not dusty or dry. Smooth, mellow. Maybe a bit mysterious. Smells great, and there are a million notes, but I just almost feel like I wish there was something dirty in the base. Performance is good. I just keep getting a Kouros vibe. Like Kouros is the wild child, and this is the proper older sister, who is a much more traditional beauty.

Today was the one I was most excited for. Musc Ravageur. I put this on about 7 hours ago. I could smell it for a while, but it seems to have settled into a skin scent. I don't feel I'm beastly screaming the scent at everyone around, but it is very pleasant. I love the smell of musk, but I just worry that it feels a bit feminine to me. My mother wore Jovan Musk all her life, and when I smell musk, it seems to remind me of that. My wife said "Oh, vanilla." when she smelled it. I asked her if she read it as feminine, and she said she didn't. It does seem to be pretty straight forward vanilla clove cinnamon musk. It is a bit softer than I would have guessed. Less edges. Really really smooth. At this point it seems to be mainly the musk that I smell. So far this is the prettiest of the 3 to me, though the weakest performance.

So I'm getting ready for round 2 of my monthly scent trials. Where I'm at right now I feel like I'd like to try thing that are more masculine and less pretty. I'm feeling like the scents that have drawn me in have been the less unisex. I know that I did not like Kouros, but that was more to do with the incense in it and less the animalics. I might have to give it another try at some point, considering it seems my tastes are evolving the deeper I get.

    I've ordered:
    Leather Oud by Dior
    Caron Yatagan
    L'animal Sauvage
    Muscs Koublai Khan.

This is a great thread. I'm enjoying your smelling notes and seeing what you're ordering next.

I've never tried L'Animal Sauvage or anything else by Marlou.

    I like Yatagan a lot.

I think you might like Muscs Koublai Khan. I think it has the more masculine and less pretty smell you're looking for.

Leather Oud, though, is a shocker. Maybe try that one when your wife isn't around.

Initial impressions: all these seem to have similarities. Not smelling the same at all, but a common vein. Yatagan is the farthest apart.

The one I was most excited for was the Muscs Koublai Khan. 830 AM application. I was really surprised with this one. It is really much prettier than I thought it would be. The wild imagery that is thrown around with this as a crazy dirty smell are not what I get from it. First and foremost here, I get musk. Lots of musk. I feel that I must just read musks as clean, because this being regarded as a dirtier one, I still think it smells pretty clean. There is something creeping unseen in the distant back that could possibly be the skankyness, I'm having a hard time pinpointing it. At 1230 PM it is still readily apparent on my skin. I do get wafts occasionally. I feel like it is very powdery and clean at this stage. Like baby powder. Such a clean and innocent smell juxtaposed against the musk, that others read as naughty I would think would be a beautiful combo. I find this to be a really nice scent. Very sweet, and I don't mean like candy or sugar. Nicely blended. I love the way it smells, but just not for me.

    Leather Oud Dior:
First applied a bit on my wrist a few days ago to familiarize myself with it a bit.

Second try. Applied at 8:30 am. I feel it is a semi-pleasant scent. Definitely leathery. Masculine. 3 hours in, I felt it was pleasant. My wife said it smelled nice. I really like it at this point. It is very potent. A couple sprays probably would do it. 5 hours in my wife says it stinks. I don't know what that means. Stinks or smells nice. 12 hours in I feel my first bit of fecality appear. Kinda smells a bit like a dirty hamster cage. Not super dirty, like rotten. Just like one that needs to be changed soonish. Reapplied the scent. I like it again here. Not stinky to me, not floral at all, not sweet. Kinda smells like horse people. Like fairly clean horse people would smell when dressed up a bit. Maybe at like a horse show. I really like this smell, though I'm not a cowboy, and probably can't pull this off too well. I'm not even sure I want to smell this way, but I find it a super interesting smell. I could never imagine going through a whole bottle of this!

Yatagan Caron - Wore this on one wrist about a week ago. Today, I put this on at 3 pm. And as I write this I just spilled my sample all over my table. Yeesh, first spilled sample, but I will be enveloped in this scent while I write this for sure. This to me smells very similar to being outside at a certain spot in the house I grew up in. Right underneath ten 60-70 foot white pines. Not the needles themselves neccesarily like maybe Polo, but the tree itself, the brown dead pine needles on the ground, the sticky sap on your hands. It smells a lot like this. I also get some hint of something akin to when I've been outside cutting logs for firewood. If you have ever heated you house mainly with wood, I smell this as a wood burning house that is not burning wood at the time. Half hour in it smells amazing. Grows on you quite a bit. Every time I smell it I like it. I does smell outdated. It is also a very familiar scent. I know of nobody who has worn it, but I'm sure I have smelled it before. At the 7 hour mark it is a faint skin scent. Still there, but subtle. Not super long lasting, but a pleasant enough projector. Not too beastly, not too gentle.

The initial blast of MKK reminds me of getting some scent-less soap/cleanser in my mouth. I agree it smells very sweet. Sometimes I really love it sometimes not.

Speaking of stuff smelling like musk and/or animals, If you want to smell like cat fur you could try L'ombre Fauve. Also smells sweet, but to my mind smells more natural and a bit more mellow than MKK. Something about MKK smells very "perfumey" in my mind.

Today I tried L'animal Sauvage by Marlou. Pretty musk, with early barnyard oud. That calmed to musk with a hint of oud and civet maybe? Nice smelling, but not superlative in any way. Very nice musk, people saying mkk light are not that far off. Softer, nicer.

Enjoyed reading your impressions of these fragrances. You have a nice way of describing the notes as they appear to you. How about Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP?

Which samples are you thinking of ordering next?

Baccarat Rouge 540 EDP - I’ve tried a few dabs of this a few times, but just could never find a perfect day to give it a full wearing. Today I gave it a go. Very sweet. Smells really good, but leans feminine to me. This is what the color hot pink would smell like if it had a smell. Wife said she would enjoy wearing it, but that it was not for me. Cotton candyish, strawberry taffy, ambergris. Still getting wafts once in a while 7hours later. Skin scent is still strong. Anecdotally here, I was mid wear, decided to look it up on Fragrantica, and saw a review about a doctors office. I was like, “what? They’re crazy,” I then respelled my wrist and boom, latex gloves. Even now, if i think about medical settings while smelling it, it’s pure doctor gloves.

Thanks Morrison! I’ve been waiting for a discount code or something, I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about maybe L’Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer, Grand Soir by MFK, and Fahrenheit le Parfum. Been looking in to Xerjoff frags, as well, but none has really hit me as a must try, maybe Nio or Mefisto seem to be the most recommend, but I just don’t know if they will be for me.

It didn't sound like I would like it from the reviews I read, and your description does nothing to dispel that notion. I mean, if I happened upon it somewhere, I'd give it a go, but I'm not going to go out of my way to sample it. Oud and Absolue Pour Le Soir are my favourites from this house so far. I like Oud enough to own it, and I would like to own APLS one day too.

LAdDM is one of my absolute favourites- it was instant love for me. Haven't really liked anything else I've tried from Tauer, except Une Rose Vermeille I guess. Au Coeur du Desert is on my near-future test list...I'm desperate to try this 'variation' of LAdDM to see how it compares. I don't own Fahrenheit Parfum but I did really enjoy my sample. I would like to add this one to my collection. I'm a huge fan of the original. Haven't tried Grand Soir yet. I'm concerned that I may find it slightly too feminine.

Looking forward to hearing about on your next sample selection / testing...

Received my samples in the mail today. Initial impressions

L’Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer- smells like nothing ive ever smelled before. Dry desert, some background incense. Nice. Cant wait to wear it fully.
Grand Soir by MFK- Beautiful amber. Possibly the best amber i have smelled.
Fahrenheit le Parfum- reviews seem on point here. An updated Fahrenheit with some booze and vanilla.

Those are good notes for these. You're still doing a great job of picking some of the most discussed fragrances.

I discovered LAdDM (along with Musc Ravageur) right at the beginning of my journey into niche. I remember thinking, "Oh my God...all niche fragrances are going to be this good." Of course, I was sadly mistaken. And now, 15 years and hundreds of fragrances later, both remain in my Top 5 of all time. LAdDM feels totally unique to me. I think it evokes a 'desert aura' remarkably well. I love the various transitions it makes throughout the day. There are some very noticeable changes. Also, it easily lasts a full day on me. I can even smell it after a shower. I have some older juice though. I'm not sure how beastly it is these days. Would like to hear about the performance, as well as your general thoughts on it, after you give it a full wear. My (third) decant is almost finished and I think it's high time I owned a bottle of LAdDM. It has more than earned its place in my collection.

L'Air du Desert Marocain - Applied at noon, and again at 315. It reads to me as incense, which is not my favorite but it is beautifully blended. Something clear and almost citrusy, but in a dry not sweet way. This all comes in with a swell of cedar that feels like the center. A small sharp pinching of what I think is the jasmine sneaks in here as well. Definitely invokes imagery of a desert. Projected well, with clear wafts for about 4 hours. Eight hours in and I can't smell anything on my sweatshirt, but is present as a skin scent. . Faint incense, dry vetiver. and amber, in that order. Had a moment when smelling my arm that made me pause, like harps strumming when going a cartoon goes into a dream sequence. It feels like art.

I got a few mls of each of these, and have a touch of a cold, so it will be interesting to see how this effected my experience.

*edit - I wore it again and stand by my earlier comments

Fahrenheit Le Parfum - 5 ml, I'm about 3 ml in. Full disclosure, the EDT is one of my favorites. Sprayed it on at 10 PM tonight, now at 4 AM it is still present. I also sprayed the EDT on my other arm as a reference. I read this as leather and booze. Not sickly sweet, but the vanilla gives it a bit of fullness, maybe makes this scent less sharp somehow that the original. The original is fresher. I feel like I get some spices, almost incensy, but just not quite. I assume this is the coriander and cumin. I like it. I like the balance in this fragrance. It adds some sweet, but a little spice as well. Feels contemporary. Feels a bit darker in color than the original. Fallish fragrance. Has the original DNA in there somewhere. You can definitely tell they are related. I don't get the beast mode performance out of this that others seem to. Though, I do not think this underperforms. Solid I'd say on silage and longevity. Definitely last longer than the original (new reform) by far. Full bottle worthy for me.
