    Default Reconsiderations

Have you ever gone back to a fragrance you thought you didn't like and found it wonderful? I've never been a fan of Guerlain's Habit Rouge (I can hear the collective gasp), but, a few weeks ago, I pulled out the vintage bottle that I own and I finally "got" it. Now, I can see it as part of my regular rotation. Anyone else had this experience with a fragrance?

It took me more than one try to fall in love with two of my now-favorites: Mitsouko and Cuir de Russie.

    Chopard Casmir parfum

It must have been inexpensive at the time I bought it because I don't usually go for vanilla fragrances. I've only worn it a few times every winter, but it's really grown on me. It's a well-done scent.

Vintage Heritage- while not having disliked it in the first place, did still somehow react quite tepidly and reserved towards it, but nowhere near the current enthusiasm after giving all its subtleties and well structured notes not just repeated tries, along with unexpected rediscovered enthusiasm

    Roja Dove Creation-E Parfum.

Initially thought it just smelled like an ashtray. Took me about 3 wears to fall for this one. It's a very complex parfum strength so I found one needs to actually endure the first half hour to get through the tobacco blast. After that it's a masculine boozy, slightly sweet fragrance that I have yet to find a replacement for. Far from a crowd pleaser but one of my favorite scents around.
    Don't stank.

Shalimar (and Guerlain in general). I didn't know what the fuss was all about. Then I tried Shalimar vintage EdT and it clicked.

And Bond No.9 every single time I wear it. It's really temperamental on me and sometimes wears nicely (that's when I like it) or not (and that's when I hate it). I still keep going back to it. I really don't know why I haven't gotten rid of the bottle yet.

Maybe Aoud Pur Oriental, but my pause was short-lived.

Some things have grown on me: Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree, Versace L’Homme. I liked them at first, but wasn’t hooked. Now they’re my favorites while I’m wearing them. I’ve backed up the Chanel, and the Versace could be next.

My most recent and dramatic example is original A*Men. Really never clicked with me six or seven years ago when I first tried it. I took it as crass and tacky. Now I love it, really enjoy its complexity, and take its attitude as intelligently cheeky and playful, but also both fresh/classic and sexy.

There are a few fragrances that I have had to reconsider. For me, as a vintage lover, it is usually a matter of tracking down the right bottle, from the right era.

Diorissimo took a few tries...sampled a putatively vintage EDT that was not inspiring, then tried vintage parfum, after obtaining a a few different vintage miniatures. Each smells slightly different, but they were all good. Then, tried the recent Extrait and liked that too.

And then there's Youth Dew. Current EDP was a scrubber (I tried, I really did!). Vintage bath oil is wonderful,

I know that if I could just get my hands on vintage Apres L'Ondee, I would love it, instead of the current EDT that vanishes on me, I try not to think about it,

Rive Gauche and A*Man was hate at first sniff. Then I found myself going back to the fragrance store to sample again, and again and just fell in love with both.

    Bleeker Street
    Millesime Imperiale
    Dior Homme
    Pure Havane
    Rose 31
    Burberry London
    Rive Gauche
    Tea for Two
    Sel Marin
    Voyage d'Hermes

Armani Code. I found it pleasant when launched and then it had a boom! I could smell it everywhere and I started disliking it.Now the fever has passed and it got my liking again.

Vetiver Oriental, the vetiver/amber combination seemed as appetizing as anchovy ice cream.

Then, I craved it. Go figure.

Usually it's stuff I am overexposed to that I end up finally liking after it stops being as ubiquitous. Curve for Men, Polo Blue, Sauvage, etc. Once it isn't all I smell anymore, I'm able to appreciate it in contrast to whatever else has become the new "It Girl" of the mainstream.

    Shalimar PI.

I tried it, hated it, went back to it perhaps 12 months later and fell for it hard.
It is now in my top 10, I don't ever want to be without it.

I am lucky, I have a 60ml and a 100ml bottle put away along with probably less than 5 ml left in the bottle I am currently using.
I sure wouldn't say no to another bottle for the right price though.

I can't think of any unless I include bad first impressions from just a few wears from a sample. Usually it goes from "great" to "okay" rather. Well.. I suppose I didn't love Angeliques sous la pluie from several samples of wears, so that might be one, I really enjoy that one now. I thought it was a bit unapproachable at first, more like a thing than a perfume to wear.

I'm kind of embarrassed to type it but... Slumberhouse Norne. It was so different than what I expected that I couldn't see the proverbial forest for the trees. Now it's a monolith in my collection.

Yes! I didn't get Mitsouko at all when I first tried it. It smelled like gasoline to me. Then I smelled a perfume that was touted as an "homage to Mitsouko" that drove me back to the source. It was as if a prism appeared and I saw all the colors. Sometimes you need that boost to see over the fence. (Mixing metaphors, I know).

My gut reactions tend to stay with me because my nose focuses on what I dont like and I cant get around it. However I do revisit samples and there has been one that I did a hate to love reversal on and its New York Intense EdP. It grew on me in a big way
