Default What are your thoughts on perfumes from Kilian?

I recently smelt a few of these in Selfridges, London. One of the smoke perfumes was very nice ('Light My Fire', I think), however nothing else really impressed. They didn't have 'Apple Brandy' which I was looking forward to smelling.

So what's the deal with this house? Worth the money?

    Thanks!

    Completely overpriced and overrated.

Though the hype has died down in the last 2-3 years.

Don't own any, but I have liked all that I have tried in stores or have received as samples with purchases. I think it's a quality house.

I have both Incense Oud and Black Phantom, and they are two of my favorite fragrances. Yes, it's an expensive house, no doubt, but they have some very nice scents. Probably shouldn't generalize because it will vary by your taste and the specific juice in question.

They have pretty nice fragrances in the Arabian Nights collection, being Incense Oud one of the best and worthy the price imo. I like Back to Black, Sacred Wood, Criminal of Love, Straight to Heaven, Woman in Gold and Liaisons Dangereuses too, but I don't think I would pay the full price for most of them.

I own quite a few By Killian's and I like them a lot. Recommend you test before you buy because the fragrances are not universally loved. Some other thoughts on By Killian are:

    • Killian charge way too much due to the built in costs of their outlandish box. The big lacquered locking box is actually an obstacle for collectors because who wants to have a dozen of these big locking boxes sitting around - such a waste!
    • compared to other brands of similar quality their 50 ml. size is over priced, however other brands are raising prices up to Killian, so price is less out of line today that it was.
    * My two favorites are Musk Oud and Pure Oud.
    * Also very good scents are Straight to Heaven, Single Malt, STH Lemon Splash, Royal Leather, Imperial Tea, Vodka on the Rocks.
    • Whenever I hear discussion of is it worth the money for these brands ( Killian, Creed, LeLabo, Fragr du Bois, Roja Dove, Mona di Orio, Zegna, Tom Ford, etc) I realize and remind myself that managing money and resources is one of the big challenges of our time. I struggle with it like we all do. Nobody should be collecting these brands if they don't have plenty of money to spend on such nonsense.

Own three in travel case format (minus the lacker box, minus the crystal bottle, 30 mls of juice + a nice atomiser = 100 USD tops in retail) - and LUV them: A Taste Of Heaven, Straight To Heaven, Back To Black

Very popular and 'buzzy' when first launched but I don't bother with them anymore -- Sacred Wood is nice, so is Beyond Love (if you like tuberose)

I believe by Kilian offers a bespoke service for the price of a car? I dont understand this how scent can be worth this. Anyone care to explain?

I find many of them good, but not enough for me to buy. The one I may end up buying is Pure Oud.

As for the price of bespoke perfumes, there are people who spend the price of a car for a dress or a bag. When personal net worth surpasses 10 million, one probably starts not caring.

they are nice, but most of the money is for an overblown packaging like the "Totenkopf" (Dark Lord & Black Phantom) series which is rather tacky!

I think of them like I think of Byredo.

The occasional likable scent, but largely a bunch of hype and subpar quality for their asking price.

I have a few Kilians that I really love and would not want to be without, but strangely, I have not been tempted by most in the line.

If you really like a particular fragrance of theirs, I'd say the cost is as "worth" it as any other absurdly expensive brand. Of the ones I like, I haven't run across any other worthy/cheaper alternatives.

Somehow, you need to find a way to sample the ones that look interesting to you. They are rather hard to find, and not too cheap. eBay has a good selection of samples, but I would recommend only buying genuine samples, not decants.

My favorites from the line are:

    Straight to Heaven/STH Extreme
Straight to Heaven Splash of Lemon
Single Malt (the grandest boozy scent I've smelled)
Apple Brandy (another great boozy scent, but takes a back seat to Single Malt, for me)

I also enjoy Back to Black and Prelude to Love, but enjoy them more on women.

I will have to try straight to heaven but I disagree about single malt and apple brandy not having acceptable cheaper alternatives. these particular 2 are somewhat novelty fragrances that have been superbly matched by Alexandria fragrances. (clone brand). Their Creation-E and Amber Aoud clones are decent but they are no where near a replacement for the real Rojas. the AF Apple Brandy creation though? Spot on. Forty bucks.

Try before you buy. I've not found the house to be particularly compelling. Some of the best from that house are from the Arabian Nights collection. Having a decent collection of pure Ouds, Musks, etc Killian just doesn't make the grade. You opinion may differ, however.

Agree, but i do have a few older creations like Incense Oud which are fantastic.

Tip to OP - save a lot by buying the refill bottle and getting a bottle online - to me, the presentation / case etc eat up too much particularly for this house...

Not that attracted to their base or "DNA", but completely love 4-5 of them and own 3.

When I first started this journey I sampled most in the line and there is something heavy handed in all of their scents..they just come across and thick, heavy scents and it wasn't my style.

I've been procrastinating in trying this line because the only place around that has it has a reputation for being snooty as all hell. If I do get in there and finally try them out and happen to love one I can definitely live with a travel size. I'm most interested in Straight to Heaven Extreme.
