Good morning/evening all! I just snapped awake at about midnight-thirty our time. Yay,, steroids. When this hapnend last night, I doused myself in L'Instant Magic before I crawled back into bed, and it eventually carried me off to where I needed to be for a couple of hours. Tonight I had a sudden and quite uncharacteristic craving fot Shalimar--just good old, unadulterated Shalimar (albeit pre-war, apparently, or at least very vintage EdT). We'll see how it treats me tonight, but it fit like a glove when it went on, like it's something I'm actually *supposed* to be wearing--which has always been the problem with Shalimar and I, that feeling that it's supposed to be somebody else's perfume.

I read a review of Shalimar somwhere on Fragrantica, I think (a really good one--this gal can write), where the reviewer told a story about her first contact with a Guerlain counter when she was a young thing back in the 80s. She had a real-deal Guerlain saleswoman, and French to boot; the woman telling the story said that her young thing self wanted Shalimar, right then, that day; but the Guerlain saleswoman charmed her and called her "mignon" and convinced her that what a young thing like herself needed was the innocence and freshness of Champs-Elysees--perfectly played, I think (and the writer went on to describe some of her college experiences wearing it). Anyway, the Guerlain SA told the review writer to wait for Shalimar, to come back for it "after her heart has been broken." I love that review and I don;t even know if it's still there, especially because the Shalimar reviews page is a gazillion pages long (and so is the Champs-Elysees page, where I think it actually *might* be). Yet another experience (there are so many in story and song) of the French schooling us on the hows and whens and applications of their marvelous cultural contributions . ..

And--point being, my heart has been broken a few times, but it's currently and perhaps permanently dashed in pieces, and Shalimar actually smells like something I should be wearing. It's comforting to me in its bitterness. I think I've commented before on how this particular iteration has the most leather I've ever smelled in Shalimar--but i'm unfamiliar with vintage for the most part. I can see myself chasing some more of this down; it feels protective in much the same what that Chanel No.19 once felt protective, when she wrapped her tendrils around my bruised teenage heart and reminded me that there was more to life than 15 year old boys. It's the leather heart, the iris. And one very young woman and one mature woman. The heart's still broken, but Lady Shalimar speaks the truth: there's more to life..

Thanks very very much dear Terry

    Hello all,

I’m at the airport, wearing Dzongkha , on my way to Phoenix. It’s raining there, a rarity. I will spend some time on the Hopi mesas, Navajo Canyon de Chelly, Monument Valley, and a few other locales. I finally picked my travel fragrances: L’Air Du Desert Marocain, Le Parfum de Therese, and Cashmere Mist.

    Have a good day.

The Japanese art of kintsukuroi (or kintsugi) comes to mind. Perhaps Shalimar is the gold heated to liquid state, primed to help fill in the cracks and solder the broken pieces back into place. But then which fragrance would be that same gold cooling, settling everything into its new configuration? Time should tell, I hope.
