    Default Hendley Laboratory Series 2019

Hans Hendley has a great idea, something I've been hoping to see happen somewhere for a while. Below is the gist from his website:

Specialties for olfactory explorers & the perfume obsessed. Obscure rarities for collectors & historians. Intimate views into process for the curious.

The Laboratory Series is a one year long subscription service offering six new & exclusive perfumes over its course.

Each perfume will be made specifically for the series and will not be available elsewhere or further reproduced.

Bottle sizes may vary from 10ml–30ml depending on concentration and suitability for the type of fragrance.

Packages will be sent on a bi-monthly basis beginning in January and ending in December 2019.

Limited to 33 participants or December 31st.

    One-time enrollment fees:
$270 ($250+$20 shipping) for addresses within the USA.
$340 ($250+$90 shipping) for international destinations.
Of the 33 spots available, I believe roughly 1/2 were full as of yesterday.

What it means to me is to be able to get a glimpse into the process of a perfumer messing around and trying new stuff. I like much of his work so far and hope he sticks around for a while, so for me this will be a treat. Seems smart on his end because he's going to be messing around anyway, looking for inspiration and honing his craft - might as well make some money where you can as a one-man-show small business, this accomplishes that while getting feedback from perfume hobbyists along the way. I think it's a cool idea.

I'm sure someone is already bent out of shape because of "six new & exclusive perfumes". You can compare this to Les Exclusifs, Privee, or Hermessence all you like, but this isn't that. Intent aside, it comes out to $45 a pop ($56 if overseas) so it's hardly an expensive=better scheme either. $270 is a lot of money for me personally and well beyond what I'd normally pay for a fragrance, but this is six different scents and a chance to experience someones creative process. That's surely not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm all about it.

I will say that instead of not ever reproducing any from this series, it would be nice to see something that really resonates with people be potentially floated as part of the regular lineup, or maybe a version of it. If he whips up a kickass vetiver and refuses to make any more, he's gonna hear about it! I personally couldn't care less whether or not they're exclusive, but that's just my two cents. He's made the decision to commit his time, effort, and materials to this and I'm glad to participate in it either way.

I'd like to use this thread as a place for feedback on them. I'll be posting my thoughts and hopefully there is at least one other person who signs up for the series as well so I'm not just talking to myself...but I'm an only child so it wouldn't be the first time.

Obviously since none will be shipped out until next year, this thread will go dormant for a while, but I figured I'd start this up now in case there are any Hendley fans who don't regularly check the website, or anyone who might be interested in general.

I think it goes without saying that "laboratory" doesn't guarantee dumb reach work scents. I don't think it guarantees off-the-wall oddities that smell like poopy underwear either (which I could do without) but I wouldn't sign up for this without an open mind. His current line up is super wearable and easy to approach compared to a lot of other stuff out there, but I'd imagine a curveball or two in this series. Disclaimer just for good measure:

With adventures in fine artisanal perfume guaranteed, all rights shall be reserved to surprise, shock & ultimately to please. This service is to be approached only with an open mind & a desire for olfactory experiences. Enrollment in the service stipulates good faith in Hendley Perfumes to provide excellent value, uncompromising quality and personalized customer service in exchange for an initial investment. Those who might feel concerned about exact specifications not stated here should contacting me to clarify before enrolling.

    Hey!

I signed up for this ride, and couldn't be more than excited. Also, I can't afford it, so if anyone wants to split a membership with me (maybe alternating who keeps original packaging each month, etc.), let me know! Otherwise, looking forward to this thread populating itself in a month or so...

Good timing, I was just going to bump/summarize the gist of the series with a few bullet points in attempt to gin up interest so this doesn't end up a solo show, since I tend to go tl;dr typing and forget many people are probably reading this via phone - but looks like all slots have been filled and it's now "sold out".

Anyone else here sign up? I see Hendley stuff pop up in the SOTD feature fairly regularly but there's not a ton of discussion on the boards, save for a mention of Fume here and there. I think he makes some of the more easy-to-wear fragrances relative to many other indie houses, not really the shock & awe/left field type of stuff, which can be fun too. I think this is going to be a good time. Glad there's at least two of us!

I was considering somehow turning it into a pass/group effort to get some discussion going if no one else showed up, seems like you had similar thoughts, not a bad idea. I don't mean to sound condescending or be a downer, but if "I can't afford it" was a serious statement and not tongue-in-cheek - well, it's not a good idea to buy things you afford. This pay-to-play hobby can be a serious issue without budget and restraint, especially with the onslaught of tempting new releases. It's kind of an elephant in the room it seems, although it is discussed sometimes. Although relatively speaking, $270 for 6 different bottles (albeit smaller ones) is really on the reasonable end of things.

Regardless of being serious or tongue-in-cheek, welcome aboard And Hendley sells wonderful 9ml travel sprays for less than $30. Everyone can afford that, go buy some

There is some serious truth in this. Let me revise to, "I can afford this, but I would rather afford half of this."

That makes me feel better, having recommended Hendley to you and all. That was the closest I'll come to parenting here and last time it'll happen in this thread

Wish I had come here earlier and seen the talk of splitting up the bottles! If anyone who signed up is interested in that going forward—let me know!

I'm about a 70% fan of the line. I love Fume and wear it often, really like Mown and the summer freebie #FFCC33, am still unsure what I think Bourbon in the longterm, like Rosenthal enough for a smell but not enough to buy, but Blond and Amora are not my thing—in fact sometimes I find them pretty off-putting, but there are some interesting things happening in them. $270 is definitely a lot of money for me, too, so ultimately decided to pass on the series. (Well, it sold out before I really *decided*, so the decision was made for me.)

But I'm really curious about it and love the idea. For those of you who bought in, please do update with your impressions! (And let me know if anyone wants to split!!)

Did you get in on this thebeck? I'm guessing not, considering your most admirable policy of small splits only. Seriously, I wish I had the willpower.

Glad to have you aboard! It will be bi-monthly for the record, but either way I'll bring whatever is out by summer '19 to NYC if there's another meetup. We missed you this year.

I think my percentage might be in that ballpark as well, based on what I've tried. Amora I do not get along with, it's just not a genre I can typically stomach, although it's done far better than most fruity florals I've tried. Jade I go back and forth on. It's novel but again in a style that I don't generally favor (minty). I do applaud the use of seemingly disparate notes that mesh fairly well (spearmint, star anise, benzoin).

I wondered if anyone else ob BN had a travel spray of Sunglow/#FFCC33. I really liked it, which was somewhat unexpected considering I'm not usually huge on fresh Eau de Cologne types of things, as Hans had billed it. I think it might sell well if he made it part of the line up, since he doesn't really have another like it, but I think the honeysuckle enfleurage was very time-consuming and it has other pricey and/or rare materials.

Of the bottles I have (all travel sprays) Bourbon is the one I wear least, although I do think it's thoroughly impressive. On me it wears like an old-school extrait (it is an extrait, I think) where it needs a good 30-45 minutes to settle in before it "smells good". I don't find the opening particularly off-putting or anything, but it seems to be built for the long haul. Certainly not your average vanilla. It does smell a little 'vintage' in it's own way. There's real castoreum and I believe 2 of the 3 common nitromusks.

I discovered the house too late to be able to try some of the earlier ones like Auric, Tama, and Gia. They all sounded potentially excellent, if the note listing and current catalog are anything to go by.

^^ Indeed, the first should be on it's way to participants the week of Jan 21st. It's already whipped up and currently maturing. He also is starting a journal for the series so people can follow along with his thought process during the next year.

No name or note listing for the first one yet, but he has some color associations which I thought was neat. I find color associations as interesting, if not more interesting, than a note listing. I also liked some of the language he used about the note listing - "brainstorming official note listing, etc." which speaks to my thoughts on pyramids/note listings very much.

    Anyway, looking forward to it!

Seems like Hans Hendley and Bruno Fazzolari share some of the "synesthesia" esthetic sense, music+art+visual into their perfumes.

I'm eager to try out Bourbon, Rosenthal and Fume, before I get the Laboratory first shipment.

Hans is calling it Balsamic Blush.

Unfortunately I'll be out of town when it arrives but will look forward to hearing what other participants think of it, eventually. I'm a fan of blind sniffing so I'll hold off reading impressions until I get my nose on it and scribble down some thoughts.

Back in town and diving into Felt. Glad you are liking it, tc! I wore a few sprays yesterday and a few more again today - warm spicy and resinous/woody but not too heavy at all, really a rather light overall texture to it, transparent in some ways. Not a bad thing at all, if anything it's enjoyable to sniff a not super dense spicy/resinous affair. Have some notes on it scribbled down at work that I'll try to make cohesive and post.

Hans was generous, as always, and the few people who didn't get a chance to sign up for the Lab Series but chimed in with interest will likely get a chance to try this. I'm kind of swamped with life right now but I will reach out over the weekend.

Also, an untitled sample was included in the package with no details except it will be part of the regular line up coming this spring. One thing is for sure from testing it on paper - it's a vetiver! One of my 2019 NY resolutions was to stop pretending there is such a thing as having too many vetivers, so thanks Hans for enabling me to run with that

I enjoyed the lightness with the spice. Depth without being earnest or serious.

Untitled sample was very weak for me. Not substantial enough to get a grasp on. For me.
