It depends. I've been neglecting a lot of my stuff because I'm not as in shape as I want to be atm (gotta cut more) so I don't feel confident enough to wear them, plus it changes my wardrobe choices. Not gonna wear Chypre Palatin to work wearing a hoodie, haha.

But as a general type of thing... whatever I'm feeling at the time, and I also like to incorporate ones I haven't worn in a while (Basenotes wears option helps with this). Oh, and weather does play a role, even though... maybe it shouldn't as much, because I'm in A/C 23+/7 anyways, but... /shrug

Part mood, part weather part how I am going to dress.

But sometimes, I'll have a scent in my head and know I am going to wear next day.

Sometimes when I can't decide, I use the "pick me something random" feature here on BN in the wardrobe section. Although i tend to avoid it, since it usually picks the the stuff I least want to wear at the time!

If I'm testing samples, I blindly reach into the bag and pull one out. The rest of the time it's whatever moves me that particular morning. I'll wake up and want a floral, or something more gourmand, or maybe light.

Every now and then I feel a bit sorry for the perfumes I haven't used in a long while and they get a day out.

I would like to say random/mood but that's not a very nuanced answer.

The first level of decision is somewhat a combination of first warm/cold weather or the versatile fragrances and day/night. This makes it extremely rare for me to put on Dior Homme Intense on a warm morning. It (almost) never happens. The same goes the other way with let's say Nautica Voyage a winter night. It is not rules but for me it is a good way of usage.

But since I have over 100 fragrances to choose from, many are fitting for almost anytime. This makes it harder for me to choose compared to when I only owned a few. Sometimes I would like a better way to choose than just randomly. The mood makes me long for certain fragrances but sometimes I feel indecisive when I am going to pick SOTD/SOTE. Therefore I'm always up for challenges or themes in these forums. It makes it easier.

I do sample and try lots of fragrances and there I hardly ever follow any rules. I try them often and whenever.

Lately last minute, I used to plan it out sometimes still do usually depending if it’s for work or where I’m going. I also try the rotate my wardrobe but usually always wear my favorites and ones I consider top notch.

I factor in the season/weather, but beyond that it's fairly random. Sometimes I'll ponder my SOTD while I'm in the shower, but it's usually a last-minute grab while I stare at whatever is in my bedroom fragrance drawer at the moment. Very rarely, it will be one mentioned here on BN that I haven't worn in a while and I'll pull that bottle out the night before. I also avoid wearing the same SOTD two days in a row.

Each month I pull out a rotation of 12--15 bottles and put them on my shelf and last month's away in a drawer. Of those 12 to 15 fragrances I just grab whatever catches my fancy in the morning. If there are any bottles among them that I don't use during the month, they stay there until I use them at least once. If after a few months I still haven't worn a particular bottle then I know it's time to get rid of it and perhaps replace it with something new.

    The fragrances choose themselves.

Some things go together well in succession: Moschino Pour Homme, followed by Versace L'Homme, followed by Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentree is a natural progression, for example.

Right now I'm going through a lot of my frags and it's just a matter of rotating through them. Sometimes they're not exactly appropriate for work (i.e. old Trussardi Uomo) but I go easy on application. Other times I'm just using one frag over & over to drain it out, especially when it's low. When I get a new frag oddly that doesn't usually go in heavy rotation... Not sure why. Even when I really like a frag I just got (i.e. I love Halston 1-12, got it last month, wore it maybe 3 times) that doesn't mean I'll wear it much. Go figure!
In rotation: YSL PH HC, Devin, Aramis 900, Halston 1-12, CdNIM, Helmut Lang Cologne, Fougere Royale, et al.

I have my fragrances separated by seasons:

    Spring/Fall
    Summer
    Winter

From there, I go by mood and a rough idea of rotation. If there's something in particular I haven't worn in awhile, I try to prioritize that over the stuff I've worn recently. Otherwise, whatever I'm in the mood for. For example, Mugler Cologne is probably my most worn summer fragrance.

There is a historical thread I recall previously replying to, but to sum it up, I —

1/ Consider the weather. (Never changes, but "check" anyway <grin>).

2/ Consider my schedule: any meetings, 1:1s, social events following work, what have you. Weekdays are evaluated differently than weekends.

3/ Consider what I haven't worn in a while, or that's a new acquisition or that I just want to get to know better (samples of contenders go here).

4/ Consider the longevity of whatever makes the short list. If it's not too long lasting, do I already have a small sprayer decanted so I can top off? Other minutiae concerns fall under this evaluation.

Then, usually in the shower, I've decided on one to three that make the cut. When I get to my wardrobe I kind of weigh them by feel — like picking the best melon at the market — and pull it off the shelf and do me. (How many and where to spray has its own thread somewhere, with recent activity.)

    That's how I roll.

    /Acey

I wear whatever I'm in the mood for that also fits the situation, meaning, the weather & my plans for the day.

It's really no different than how I decide what clothes to wear.

Today, for example: It was a nice but chilly autumn day. I knew that, after work I had plans to meet up with a friend for happy hour. So, I went with 1725.
Current Favorites (in no particular order)
    Castile
    Royal Oud
    Rose 31
    Curve
    1725 Casanova
    Noir De Noir
    Tom Ford Extreme
    Prada L'Homme
    Les Exclusifs Eau de Cologne
    Hanae Mori H.M. (EDT)
    Pomelo Paradis
    Aqua Universalis

In addition to mood and weather, there's an element of "I like it but haven't worn it lately" that tends to break ties.

These two are fundamentally what my reply was out to say. I tend to formalize processes, hence the list format, but these answers reflect that it's a common way to "make the call" — no chicken bones needed <grin>.
