Throwing one out there for consideration.
Given his description and intended uses, Bleu de Chanel came to mind.

TdH parfum - ca't go wrong with it; if he goes light on the trigger, the cloying factor is nullified making it a long lasting but inoffensive fragrance to enjoy.

I've never tried Cedrat Boise, so unable to comment, but this might be my 2nd pick, considering his preferences - Creed's MI.

That was my first thought, though I was tempted to recommend the Eau Tres Fraiche flanker since it adds a casual edge to the seriousness of Terre.

Have you considered Pure Havane or Pure Malt? They're both unique, and high quality, Winter themed, yet totally different than most stuff that's out. Nothing like La Nuit either. I can see why La Nuit would take him so long to use, it's not really a daily wearer if you ask me, it's more of a special occasions type of fragrances. Though the same could be said with the 2 I suggested too.

Being your bro's age, and of similar attributes, I think I could relate. I mostly hang around people my age and younger, so I get feedback on my frags all the time too. That's also partially why I woulnd't recommend TdH, as it has garnered some not so positive reactions.. I also think you could dice into the Guerlain I'deal line, most of them are really nice and are appropriate for his situation.

    He said 33, not 60..
Yes! I love TdH especially Parfum but I'm 54. You probably decided by now. People are buying Dior Eau Pour Homme as a more sophisticated Iris than Prada L'homme. I'm trying that myself lately.
In silence, with body and mind still, a depth of understanding may be achieved that is not available to one who languishes at the mercy of life’s relentless chatter.

I'm not looking to spend more than $100.

I'd like to get him something fairly different than La Nuit, as I'm looking to avoid redundancy. At the same time, he said he wanted something for winter.

My bro-in-law is a young 33, athletically built, single, good looking guy who works in finance in Manhattan. He's fairly stylish but not excessive or ostentatious about it, and he has dark features. He's clean cut and well groomed. As far as his personality, he's friendly and outgoing, but at the same time low-key. He's not obnoxious or loud.

He's looking for something to wear when he goes out, and also something he could wear to work from time to time.

I've been considering getting him Terre d'Hermes. I'm torn between the EDT or Parfum. But I'm also not sure if this is the best option for him, perhaps it's just my "inner frag-head" going for this. How is Terre generally received by the opposite sex out there in single world? It's one of a few fragrances I've owned forever and have never heard any comments about at all (for better or worse). My wife likes it and I like it. That's all I know.

[ So what do you think about TdH in this scenario? Do you have any recommendations you think would be better for him?

I had also been thinking about Mancera Cedrat Boise, which I also think is really nice, and a good alternative to Aventus, which is just to expensive in this case. I thought Cedrat Boise might be a little more fun than Terre.

What do you guys think of The One Eau de Parfum? Too similar to La Nuit?

    Any recommendations are appreciated!

I will NOT be getting him any of the following however:

    Dior Homme Intense
    Sauvage (in any iteration)
    Invictus
    L'Instant de Guerlain Extreme
Code or any of its flankers

    Thanks!

I have to give him the fragrance THIS Saturday. So I basically have about 2 days to make a decision (and Fragrancenet is out of the question, since they live 10 minutes away from me but take two weeks to ship to me). I incorrectly thought I had at least 3 weeks to make a decision.

So neither one of us really have time to sample anything.

Right now I'm leaning toward these, but still looking for more ideas:

    TDH Parfum
    Sartorial
    Prada L'Homme Intense

Dior Homme (thanks to the one female member above...who it looks like now edited her original response to eliminate Dior Homme...but I like that as a recommendation)
    Cedrat Boise
    The One EDP

Guerlain Homme Intense and Pure Havane are two that I'll be able to have him sample really any time that I see him, but I won't see him before Saturday, so I'm going to hold off on these for now and maybe consider them as gifts down the road...see if he takes to the samples I put together.

Yesterday I actually gave an uncle The One EDP (a big 5 oz. bottle). And it's his uncle actually (my in-law), so I'm not sure if he'll want the same one. Still, it seems like a very appropriate option, and seems like the perfect nighttime option for a guy his age during the winter.

Alien Man and Azzaro Homme L'Eau will have to hold off for now. I need to sample them first. I'm wary of a blind buy to begin with when gifting, but especially since I've heard so little about these.

Anyway, I'm enjoying seeing all the different recommendations, and being Basenoter, what will probably happen is that I'll buy one for my brother in-law and another two or three for myself based on the recommendations in this thread. I mean, don't we all do that when buying fragrances for others?

I think I agree. I have a decant and... uhm... I don't know. The Intense is certainly darker than the original Prada L'Homme, but each time I've worn it, I felt like something about it was keeping it from being great. When I got the decant, I expected to tear through it and shop around for a deal on a bottle. That was in summer of 2017. I still haven't finished the 5ml.

I was gonna recommend this earlier on as well.. but then thought it may be too loud for an office setting. I think he said he works in finance or an office, right when i saw those words, I thought deterrent. Granted the majority of us love EdB, I know it's one of my all time favorites, but I don't know if I'd wear it if I worked around other professionals in a big city like Manhattan. I imagine passing by people a lot and EdB is a noticeable fragrance. I also can say from experience I've seen people cought when i wear it around them and ask if there's pepper in it. Which I think there is, or if not, there is something that smells like pepper for sure.

I think the quality is there, but there's something about it that makes it just kind of average, uninteresting. It's missing a personality. It's like an incomplete sketch of DHI or something like that. It's been done before and done better. While I think the style is a good match for my brother, it just doesn't cut it. I'm crossing this one off the list.

Egoiste crossed my mind. However, I'm not sure it's really something he'd be comfortable wearing during work. It's also a somewhat polarizing fragrance among today's crowd. I don't think the younger generation loves it as much as we do, though I could be wrong. It's definitely one I'd like him to try, and would be happy buying for him if he liked it. The thing is, he's been raised around mall scents--sporty, fresh, sort of generic stuff. While I want something a cut above that kind of stuff, I'm not sure how outside the box his comfort zone will extend. I'll add Egoiste to the list though (in place of the Prada).

That's exactly how I feel about the Prada. I bought a bottle of it after using the regular one for a while (which I still love and think is great). But I sold it because it's missing a clearly defined personality.

While I agree that Tom Ford Extreme is very good, it's almost too business-like. The stuff literally and figuratively smells of money to me. It's a no-nonsense, alpha-male kind of scent. I could see gifting him TFE when he turns 40, but right now I think he's too young for it. Not a bad recommendation though.

Eau des Baux has too much of a rustic appeal, in my opinion. I like it. But it's a 'cuddle around the fireplace and wear a flannel shirt' kind of scent. It doesn't match his style. And as you pointed out, it could be especially out of place/annoying in an office.

So I have about one more day for considerations. Right now on the list of consideration we have:

    TdH Parfum
    Dior Homme
    The One EDP
    Egoiste

What do you guys think about the following? I'm kind of looking for something new and fun, but still high quality:

    AdG Profumo
Givenchy Gentleman Eau de Parfum (the new one...not the old powerhouse one)
    Spicebomb Extreme
    Tom Ford Noir Extreme

I think The One edp may be the answer! It sticks to the same style he seems to like. sweet/oriental kinda. It's seductive, but not overwhelming, sort of muted, but much better than the edt imo.. it's very suitable for this time of year, and I think in general in a colder climate like NY.

In regards to your other question Dave, I think AdG Profumo is an amazing fragrance. I think others will agree. I think it's a darker aquatic, but you gotta be careful with patchouli because it's one of those notes that rubs some people the wrong way., incense as well for that matter. Though this one seems to be unanimously popular, so it could be win/win.

I don't think Noir Extreme is appropriate either, it's more of an intimate scent imo. I wore it once to a Dr's. appointment and the tech there said "you smell sexy".. I was flattered but found it kinda awkward lol.

I'm not a fan of the Givenchy, Tom For Noir Extreme or Spicebomb Extreme - they are kind of 'trying too hard' when trying too hard is not needed.

Acqua di Gio Profumo is a very good choice. Terre d'Hermes Parfum and Dior Homme EdT could be okay or great (I love these scents but have "performance issues"). Egoiste seems a classic choice, and the current version is very good. Honestly it's a cut above everything else (or most other things) discussed here, but there could be a generational / cultural gap.

    Now seriously considering:

The One EDP (this is in the lead at the moment)

Dior Homme (surprisingly , this one's close behind)

Egoiste (I'd like to hear a few more opinions on Egoiste from other members...I love the idea, but it's risky)

Givenchy Gentleman Eau de Parfum (this would be the wild card, total shot in the dark....I know nothing about it but it sounds really nice)

Terre d'Hermes Parfum (though I'm much less enthusiastic about this as when I started...I'm hearing too many conflicting opinions)

From your revised list, my 1st choice for a gift would be Dior Homme, 2nd would be TdH Parfum (though, for myself, I might prefer the TdH? Both are excellent).

The One Parfum is a can't go wrong pick. Perhaps not the most exciting option, but I don't think you can go wrong with that one for him.

Is Givenchy Gentleman Eau De Parfum hugely massively wildly superior to the new Givenchy Gentleman? ...because the new Gentleman is filler at best. I think it's cash grab chem lab junk.

I would give Egoiste to an older gent, or to a fragcom style enthusiast, but otherwise, I'd choose something else.

    TdH Parfum

Mancera Cedrat Boise (if I can find it under $100)

These are the only contenders at the moment, though this debate has seriously reignited my interest in Egoiste. I may buy a bottle for myself tonight.

While I personally own and love Egoiste it is polarising and if he isn’t a fellow fraghead might perceive it as dated.

Prada Luna Rossa Black and Tom Ford Noir Extreme would likely fit his style better from how you've described him.

    Good luck with it BB

I agree with Dior Homme. Of course here on BN many of us are very critical of it in describing it.. but I would think to most people it just smells damn good!

The other thing about Dior Homme...

I think as fragrance enthusiasts we take for granted how familiar all of these smells are to us. But to the ordinary guy who smells Dior Homme for the first time, it's going to be a pretty interesting and new experience. Dior Homme is very unique, especially before all the copy cats (Valentino, Prada, etc.) came out. It was ground-breaking upon its release, a new experience for many. So I think at the least he'll be impressed by how different it is than anything he's tried.

Now originally I said "NO Dior Homme Intense." But hearing everyone chime in about Dior Homme has me thinking that maybe DHI would be a good one after all. Initially I thought it might be too heavy or too gourmand. But I have Dior Homme on my arm right now (Terre on the other) and it seems like if it were a little darker it would be perfect for him.

I'm sorry to "change the rules" so late in the game, but for those of you who have been so helpful so far, do you think DHI would be a better choice than plain old Dior Homme. And if I had included that as an option from the jump would you have chosen it right off the bat?

Personally, I've always preferred Homme to the Intense, but right now I kind of feel like my opinion could change.

I'll be ordering within the next few hours, so don't worry, I won't drag this out much longer. Right now it's Dior Homme over TdH Parfum by a small margin, but I'm adding the possibility of DHI as well.

I'd go with Dior Homme over DHI. It's more versatile, and really, it's a masterpiece of men's perfumery.

Thanks. It's been a few years since I've owned DHI. Dior Homme was actually the last one in the whole series that I sniffed, and when I finally did I thought, "This is what I've been missing all along!" I sold DHI shortly after.

I gotta tell ya though, it's interesting having DH on one arm and TdH Parfum on the other. Both are such good fragrances, and personal top 10's. I'll sniff Terre and think, "yeah....this one's better" but then I sniff my other arm and think, "No...it's this one."

My wife sniffed both and she said she pictured her brother more in TdH than DH. But I disagree. In my mind, Terre is a bit more rustic/rural than DH, which is about as "Metro" as it gets.

I came here originally with DHI on my lips before I read your first post. It's a compliment monster on me from all ages, not that it matters as such but it seems to have a better cross-generational appeal than DH from my own experience. DH may be the better scent to the connoisseur, but DHI is probably the better to your average Joe and isn't that what matters here? TdH EDT or parfum isn't a safe choice. The Prada is a sound choice for what he might use it for, irrespective of what opinions people on here might have.

I agree with L'homme. Although personally I do prefer DHI, I think the Intense in this one is aptly named.. very intense.

I also think the fragrance The Iceberg by Iceberg was the original DH DNA that DH kinda stole, or just coincidentally came up with. In any event.. Dior will make it popular long before and obscure house like Iceberg would. Dior may have made it famous, but they aren't the originators of the concoction if you ask me.

I also think Prada L'Homme is a good choice. It sort of takes everything controversial about DH and gets rid of it, slaps Prada label on it, and what 33 year old who knows nothing about frags, wouldn't want that? lol

I'm actually a bit sad that an "average Joe" friend of mine from another country smelled L'Homme before I did. He said it was amazing and I needed to try it.. and once I did I thought.. "Dior Homme" LOL
