    Default Total fragrance used

I read many times people say on basenotes that they only use 3 sprays or less of things. Then I also read that people seem to finish bottles, or at least go through a decent amount of juice. If they are not using a lot at a time, and they have many scents that they are using, are they applying them many times a day? How many times a day would the average basenoter apply their frags? If we take roughly 10 sprays per ml that should equal 1000 sprays in a 3.4 oz, bottle. I understand some huge performers will probably never be finished, but I'm just curious about your average every day scents. Is the average fraghead just selling it off or something? I just feel like things don't quite add up.

I can't speak for others, but for myself - 2 times per day.

Twice a day at the most for me.

l recently finished two 30ml bottles, both of which l bought 6 years ago, just to give you an idea how long it takes. But then l rarely have more than 60 bottles in my collection at any one time. l buy them to wear them, not for the sake of collecting, & l usually buy the smallest bottle available. lf l don't wear them, they get sold.

Twice a day, usually three sprays. I'd say most of the people finishing bottles have been into perfume for many years? But some people also hose themselves down with 15+ sprays at a time.

Depending on fragrance strength I’d wear anywhere from 1-10 sprays. 1 SotD. 1 SotE. Sometimes I layer 2 different fragrances.

The average BN fraghead probably has enough juice to last a lifetime or a few. The primary objective of this fragrance hobby is to enjoy wearing them. Finishing a bottle is never a prerequisite for buying another. And many here would rather keep the last 5-10 ml as reference sources against the likelihood of reformulations.

If you’re playing in the big leagues, the numbers aren’t suppose to add up.

I get that most would have much left over at the end. Im not too worried about it. Just curious how people seem to run some low at such sparing rates. I totally get the bottle over decant thing, since the presentation is part of the whole package for sure! Also, im not here to judge how people spend thier own money, if anyone is thinking that. No judgement here. Just curious.

Because I am a freak who tends to wear only one fragrance for quite some time (months sometimes), I do go through individual bottles fairly quickly.

    Fair questions and statement.

I think it's a safe assumption that most (but certainly not all) folks with some history here either: 1) swap our bottles, 2) sell unused bottles or perhaps sell or give away decants, 3) don't sell anything and accept an constantly growing collection, 4) eventually stop buying bottles and just buy samples/decants unless something spectacular comes along, or - mostly likely - 5) some combination of above that evolves and ebbs and flows over time. I know that's certainly me.

As for my personal usage, ~3-4 sprays per application, usually 2 applications per day. I think I've finished off just one bottle, ever. And I've broken one.

It just depends on the fragrance and what my plans for the day are. I go a day with a dab of Chanel No. 22 vintage parfum, or two sprays of CC X. On the other hand, I can revel in 5 sprays of Salt Caramel three times in one day--not that it's so weak or disappearing, but because I'm in a Salt Caramel honeymoon. I can do the same 5 x 3 with Rosarium, as it does just last about four hours.

ETA: Yes, I broke one bottle as well.

On average I'll wear two seperate fragrances per day unless I choose to reapply the first. I'll wear one to work, then come home and throw on another for the evening.

I rarely use just two sprays. Depending on what it is, I'm usually 3 to 7 sprays. The worst thing ever is when you finish a bottle and you have to start thinking of replacing that bottle rather than adding a brand new fragrance to your wardrobe.. oooohhh the pain!!!

I greatly sympathize with this, in conjunction with other reasons expressed. And, some fragrances I have are light and inexpensive, allowing them to be sprayed with reckless abandon. And I do. While I'm normally a 2 to 3 spray person, some fragrances will only get 1 spray while others get enough to gain entrance to the oversprayer's thread. As example: Yesterday I wore 2 sprays to the base of the neck of Ombre Leather. That's more than enough for me, as it's a siren off my skin and lasts all day. In contrast, the last time I wore Banana Republic 78 Vintage Green I sprayed about 8 sprays. It doesn't get any louder in me with more sprays, but it does gain some density and longevity. Xerjoff More Than Words, one spray. Puig's Agua Lavanda, I can bathe in it. Because of how fragrances interact with me and my climate, some bottles I will never finish while others I'll go through no problem.

Some things I wear 2-3 sprays at a time (high performers), and other things, like eaux de colognes, get 15-20 at a time. Also, I tend to enjoy trading samples with other Basenoters, and certain things I own get requested often.

Keep in mind that some of the bottles I post that I've finished have taken me 5 or 10 years to finish. Not all, though. The average bottle finish time is maybe 3 years for me. My collection stays around 30-35 bottles but I do sell or give things away from time to time when I am not wearing them.

EDIT: I also sometimes switch fragrances in the evening or top up. This is if I'm going out. It's maybe half the time. Basically if I'm going out after work, I will clean up, change, and apply more perfume.
My only regrets in life are the people I haven't stood up for,
and the perfumes I've thrown away.

Twice a day, 4-5 sprays each time depending on potency.

    Default Re: Total fragrance used

Lots of variables. I average two different scents a day but sometimes it can be three but occasionally, it maybe only one. Amount of spritzes per wear varies - depending on the perfume used, sprayers vary - some don't spray much but others can deliver quite a lot of perfume per spritz & some may need reapplying but others last for many, many hours. I have a wearer's mentality not a collector's mentality where perfumes are concerned but I do like to have some variety & I love contrasts, so I currently have around 50 bottles in my perfume wardrobe - this number includes travel size sprays, small perfume oils or extraits, 30ml, 50ml, 75ml, 90ml & 100ml bottles. Some of my perfumes get used more then others & all the different bottle sizes can effect how quickly a fragrance is finished. I do regularly finish bottles & I have emptied a few bottles this year.

I wear perfume 24/7/365. Usually but not always 3 applications a day. Anywhere from 4 to 10 sprays per application. Many of my perfumes have fine misting type atomizers. I'll never use up all of what I already have so cost is no concern whatsoever to me. Perfume is an enhancement--it helps me enjoy my life and it's not something I want to be stingy about in the least. If it costs me $5-10 dollars a day to smell how I like, so be it. Nothing good to be gained by analysis of this for me.

Two sprays of most fragrances are enough for Tom Ford and Le Labo. For most Creeds and all Montales, I only use one spray. Bond No. 9's, only one. I have yet to go through a bottle in my 5 years of smelling good. Thanks.

Agree to this! You spend money one way or another I’ve yet to find another hobby or expense bring more enjoyment than fragrances.

Allow me to elaborate since 2-4 sprays has been my default mode. 8-10 sprays usually happens whenever I use the ‘walk through mist’ method of getting a more diffused aura with the lighter fragrances such as Penhaligon’s Castile, Armani Eau Pour Homme, Le Cherche Midi No.11, Creed Original Vetiver, etc.

I am a pretty heavy sprayer of most things, 6-10 is an average application, and I usually wear two scents a day. But given the size of my collection, I haven’t finished a bottle (other than 15 ml parfum extraits or decants) in years.
