Default Beau de Jour by Tom Ford (Private Blend)

    Now Smell This reports:

Tom Ford has launched Beau de Jour, a new masculine fragrance in the Private Blend range.

Classic. Sharp. Maverick. Beau de Jour fragrance presents the perfectly groomed gentleman who considers every detail. He exhibits the best version of himself to the world, but beneath the surface is something deeper, refreshing and sublime in all its layers.

A fresh, commanding entrance of Lavender from Provence introduces the clean and fervent facets of the Beau de Jour scent. The cool and refreshing open is further amplified with an infusion of energetic hybrid of lavender and lavenders. The core beats with the herbal inflection of African Rosemary and floral green Geranium with its subtle mint inflection, a powerful contrast to the leather-like warmth of Oakmoss and the electric green of Basil. Patchouli and Amber create an earthy foundation of radiant wood and sensual musky warmth, further elevating Beau de Jour’s refreshing notion of masculinity through the finish.

Tom Ford Beau de Jour can be pre-ordered now at Saks Fifth Avenue, $605 for 250 ml Eau de Parfum.

    Help from French native speakers.

What would the name suggest in French? Famously, belle de jour is a movie about a (wealthy) woman who becomes a prostitute during the day.

If so, another tongue-in-cheek perfume name from Tom Ford, admittedly more subtle than the fabulous thing.

Odd that pre-order on Saks is only for the large 250ml decanter. Though I’m excited to try this one that’s quite a commitment for a blind buy!

So when TF announced Lavender Palm back in 2011 it was exclusive to the Los Angeles Tom Ford boutique I was super excited about it. Eventually it became a regular PB and I got a sample from someone here on BN and enjoyed it and then bought a mini tester bottle someone was selling on eBay and realized I didn't like it that much at all. There was an irritating fresh note right behind the lavender than annoyed my nose - sort of conveyed a feeling of drugstore-mens-aftershave. Very synthetic. It ruined the fragrance for me and I gifted a friend my mini bottle who ADORED it and went and sought out a full bottle for himself that's how much he loved it.

So, I'm hoping this TF lavender is more to my tastes: raw, medicinal lavender. Let's see...

Lavender Palm is a curiosity to me. I own a 50ml bottle and have been on the fence about letting it go many times. There's a strange, slightly mayonaise-like accord that never leaves... but I live in L.A. and it's supposed to smell like L.A. in a bottle so I persist.

Don't forget about "the fresh, commanding entrance of Lavender" which is then enhanced by the hybrid of lavender and lavenders.

    Oof. Marketing gibberish overload.

I would like to see the original press release in French, if indeed it is a translation from French. There are many types of lavender, in France there is a nicer one grown at higher altitude (lavande) and the less nice one grown at lower altitudes (lavandin). That’s the only thing I can think of after reading that text - a blend of lavande and lavandin.

The notes sound like a throwback to classics such as Polo or Azzaro pour Homme. Similar?

Yup, Tom Ford has a talent for overseeing fragrances that are heavily inspired by classics. The true artists here are the perfumers, but Tom seems to have good taste and a sharp sense of direction. For example, Tom Ford EdP was inspired by Habit Rouge, Grey Vetiver by Guerlain's Vetiver... Even Rive Gauche by YSL was created under the direction of Tom Ford, and it's a modernization of Brut by Faberge. I think he does a terrific job in this respect.

I'm actually keen to smell this one if it smells anything like Azzaro PH.

I've tried it a couple of times. The first time I thought this is a nice, aromatic scent. But it was a casual try.

Today I did spray on to a card, and accidentally some ended up on my hand. I did smell the lavender, which was unmistakable. Please note, this is not a proper wrist test, and I had to shower in two hours. During that time I sniffed it several times on my hand. It's a very fresh lavender; clean, brisk, modern but not synthetic, not at all harsh or medicinal. There is a tinge of sweetness. It didn't feel as complex as Gris Clair or Encens et Lavande, never mind stuff like Eau Noire or Music for a While. It could be imagined to be a 'modernised' version of Oxford & Cambridge, though the lavender here is not herbal. I find Oxford & Cambridge to be rustic and herbal; it reminds me of actual lavender plants. In terms of complexity, it is similar to Caron (in other words, not so complex), but I have to admit the lavender here smells more refined (not necessarily more natural). In fact, I think the closest comparison (in terms of scent profile) would perhaps be ELdO's Antiheros.

In terms of notes, apart from lavender, maybe there was the mint adding a bit of sharpness, but hard to spot in isolation. Ditto for the rosemary and geranium. I couldn't smell even remotely any of the other notes. I wonder what the dry down would have smelled like.

I didn't wait for the dry down, but if I revisit the sprayed card (which should be in my coat pocket), I'd update here.

If I have to contextualise this scent within the Tom Ford Private Blend collection, my best attempt at a description would probably be Tom Ford does lavender via Beau de Jour as the brand did neroli via Neroli Portofino. Which, in my books, is still a compliment. I wonder if Rodrigo Flores-Roux is the perfumer.

In terms of rating etc., I would consider this to be above average within the Private Blends line. It's miles ahead of most of the Vert series, infinitely better than the Oud Minerale nonsense, and a breath of fresh air next to Tobacco Oud Intense and Oud Wood Intense. I'd like to get a sample, or perhaps a small decant.

Expect to update my assessment if/once I try it more thoroughly.

I briefly smelled the card today that I had sprayed on yesterday. It smelled of traces of the top notes with what seemed like a fresh, clean patchouli.

The green opening notes have throwback characteristics for sure.. Lavender, rosemary, Basil, over Geranium reminds me of many throwback fougere such as Azzaro PH, Brut, and with patchouli it goes towards YSL Rive Gauche PH (also a Tom Ford). The patchouli, oak moss with amber (ambroxan?) might be more like Drakkar Noir or Sauvage. Hmm.

How would you compare Beau de Jour to the last fougere that TF released (Fougere d'Argent), which in my opinion, smells a lot like Rive Gauche Pour Homme?
