Murdock - Black Tea *from sample

My neck is a bit sore from yesterday's shave and I need a day or two to recover. So, I will just go with a fragrance and decided to make it "Sample Friday" and try out one of the samples I obtained from Nordstrom. There is a synthetic tone to the mixture of clove, nutmeg and leather and there seems to be a fairly convincing animalic note in the middle of that clove/nutmeg/leather that I can't place. Civet perhaps? The woody notes in the back round also seem to be synthetic.

Now that I have this on my skin, my impression is different than on paper. On paper it seems more like black tea with a warmth added in from nutmeg. However, on my skin, it plays significantly different.

IMO, on skin, the fragrance has potential to be better if the civet note is replaced with a really ultra-light wisp of vanilla, the leather toned down a notch and the black pepper ever so slightly increased. There is definitely a place in my brain that finds this note combination pleasing and that is what made me grab a sample. On my skin that animalic note just blooms out to be too significant a player and changes what I smelled on paper. If the fragrance could just be tweeked slightly and the civet note replaced with only a wisp of vanilla, this fragrance could crack some of my seasonal rotations. At present, I'm on the fence. I will need a few more wearings. **I just sprayed a few more pumps on my chest to try and simulate a working sillage. I'm noticing a slightly 'fresh' vibe on the very front-end of the opening that seems to dissipate and go away in several minutes. I think that is what is giving this that 'tea' effect.

***EDIT - I just figured out upon reading the note break-down that it has Basil and THAT is the anchor note that is tying all the other notes together and making this combo enjoyable. I didn't know what it was, but now it's pretty clear to me. Despite the Civet/animalic-vanilla note not being listed, it's pretty clearly 'there' and unmistakable when smelling the fragrance on my arm up-close.

I will give this several hours to further evaluate. I think this has potential. If the sillage is not too animalic and it only smells that way up close, then this could be a 'buy'. I'll find out. My initial impression is that this fragrance could be better if it dispensed with the synthetics but keep the synthetic 'fresh' streak in the opening. I actually enjoy that synthetic note a lot. Despite the synthetics, this fragrance is pretty solid and has something with the notes that the perfumer chose. I think with some minor tweaking this could be a top-notch fragrance. Instead, for now, it's 'good', not great, but has the potential to be great if the company and perfumer decided to spend more time and invest more money into better ingredients.

***EDIT 2 - After 45 minutes, the anamalic note disappears into the mix's back round. So, eventually on my skin it smells like it did on the paper, it just took some time to dry down, so if you read my take on the opening, don't fear this one, it settles into a nice scent. The synthetic effect also fades into nothing and the scent smells very nice when it dries. Takes about 45 minutes to an hour to fully settle.

Scent - Nice, black tea scent. Subtle. It's not going to turn heads or grab noses. Not an attention-seeking scent. I believe enthusiasts who wear scents for their own person enjoyment will really, really appreciate this one. It's good. When it settles after an hour it smells fairly natural.

Projection - It projects about arm's length for an hour, then it becomes a personal scent. My nose is not becoming anosmic to the scent. I can still detect it after it settles. This is more of a scent that someone must be close to really smell or a really good waft of air has to carry it off of your skin for someone to catch the sillage.

Longevity - TBD. I'm about 2.5 hours in and it's a personal scent, but IMO, this seems engineered/intended to be a personal scent and be subtle. I will edit this later when this becomes a skin scent. ***EDIT - Skin scent in 4.5 hours then needs reapplication if you want to freshen it up. So, pocket atomizer recommended.
