Question What do "Friend" and "Contact" mean on this site?

    Hi, Super-Newbie here,

As a frequent lurker--especially on the DIY Forum--I wonder what "Friend" and "Contact" mean. I admire and appreciate many basenoters, especially the many stalwarts who unstintingly give valuable advice and really wonder what "F&C" might mean.

First: does one properly first ask the counter party for assent? That seems to be how many social web services behave (in this present epoch). I, however, am a little shy about trying the "Friend" or "Contact" features, not wanting to presume by putting a person--who does not know me from Adam--in a position of having to make a judgement about me.

If "Friend"-ing someone were entirely my unilateral vote of appreciation, well, I have *quite* the list of designees. The same goes for "Contact"-ing someone.

Secondly, if either status simply means I am granting permission[s] to them, well fine, I'll grant away with utter abandon. But, I have no clue as to what changes in forum functionality my designating someone as "Friend" or "Contact" will effect (even if only data clutter

<sigh> Perhaps I should regret decades of avoiding actual participation on the great BBS's of yore.

You don't need to friend anyone to post messages and get replies. It is a built in feature of the software used to support various functions on many forums, but most don't use it like it were a social media tool on this particular board, maybe the others?

    Thanx Thea.

So, I gather that, since Private Messages enable 1 to 1 comms, there is no real use in this community of 'social' features like 'friend', etc. Suits me just fine!

Friending someone has one key benefit. All their forum posts will appear in your personal feed. That's why I friend anyone I see who has interesting posts. I can't think of any other difference between friend and not friend. I can see their posts more readily.

Yep, that's the main reason to use it.

I have long wished the software here allowed you to "favorite" reviewers, so that their new reviews would also show up in your personal feed. I've asked, but my wish has not been granted....yet.
