    Default The "India scent"

Imagine that in one past life I was an Indian, living in Índia, but now I was born as an European in this life.

Maybe I could have been a powerful man, and aristrocat or a artist / painter.

Which scent would I smell like in this life that would make remember my past life.

Perfumes that come to your minds.

Remember as a fantasy or past reality? Probably the former, right?

I think is the same, no?

Since I'm not 100% sure about past lifes, I can imagine it also as a fantasy.

As a westerner I'd be reluctant to suggest or recommend a fragrance that ought to remind you of India or Asia as a whole, it's whole different mindset. Just like european idea of oud (even better, russian oud). The sentiments Guilty Absolute evokes in Russia are quite different from the sentiments of an American or European consumer.

Something like Habit Rouge... or Shalimar. Anything by Guerlain in the 20th century, really.

Growing up in India you come across Gajra walis at almost every street corner that sell garlands of jasmine flowers that women use to sorta tie or adorn their hair.

Serge lutens A la Nuit brings back the memory of that smell in the classiest way possible

Due to the sheer heat and often humidity your going to want a perfume that is popular and used in various location in India. Apparently CK One Gold is really popular in India at the moment as is Amouage Epic Man. Per India Times Creed's Green Irish Tweed is popular among those who can afford it. Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio has topped their best seller list for a while now.

So the question for you really is - do you want to be wearing what Indian men actually wear for perfumes or a fantasy version of what you think India should smell like? Until the end of the 19th century, foreign perfumes like Yardley, Tuskers, Chanel, even Shalimar was all the rage in India when it came out.

You'll probably find this article interesting: Perfumes that smell like home, a perfumer in India who tries to avoid the “kitschy, traditional stereotype of what Western people have about India".

Closest I can come in my head is Interlude, but that feels a bit more middle eastern. Maybe that with a dash of curry if we are aiming for Apu from the Simpsons stereotypes.
It’s tragic to think that heroic man’s great destiny is to become economic man, that men will be reduced to craven creatures who crawl across the globe competing for money, who spend their nights dreaming up new ways to swindle each other.
