Question Help me decide on Bleu de Chanel Parfum?

Hello all, it's advice seeking hour again.

I've tried Bleu de Chanel Parfum many times over the last few months (at stores). I like it a lot (can't say I love it). I don't like the EdT (too synthetic) or the EdP (kind of dull). Today I bought a bottle, somewhat on impulse. However, I'm now thinking of returning it (still unopened).

Why I might want to keep it -

    • I don't have anything else very similar, or in the same ballpark.
    • I think it's a pretty versatile scent, and have a hunch it'll grow on me.
    • It's pretty upbeat, urbane, modern and easy-to-wear, qualities I'm not crazy about but do appreciate in a fragrance (and I don't have many that satisfy these, perhaps only Acqua di Gio Profumo).

Why I might want to return it -

    • I'm looking to reduce my collection. Not desperate, but getting there. And this wouldn't be in my top 50.
    • For "fresh but rich/deep" scents, I already have Green Irish Tweed and Acqua di Gio Profumo (and of course, vintage Kouros!).
    • While looking to reduce, I really want to get Memoir Man, Moschino pour Homme, Devin, L'Homme Sage - and perhaps hankering for Sel Marin and a couple of Acqua di Parmas (Colonia, Assoluta).
    • This isn't emotive, substantial or even complex (though I do find it to be abstract).

    Please share your thoughts?

    Thanks!

I've been looking for something in a somewhat similar ballpark over the last couple of months as well. I'm also trying to limit my collection as I hate clutter. Still, the hunt for something fresh and deep outside of GIT and Aventus is compelling me too. I think I've finally settled on Dior Eau Sauvage parfum (2017). I tried Chanel PM edp and liked it, but didn't love it. BdC it all its various iterations no longer does anything for me. It's become a dull pop song I've already heard a 1000 times. I'm not saying it's bad, just that it's finally ran its course for me.

Those are all really good reasons to keep it and I'm sure it's why you purchased it in the first place.

I own the EDT and I'm starting to feel this one is just a little to synthetic for my tastes these days, along with the EDP, that I still really enjoy from time to time. I've gone through a couple of the samples of the Parfum testing it, the new style squeeze samples are junk IMO, but I also find it to be the best of the three. I have almost purchased it on a few occasions, but have held off as I have a 5 oz of the EDP and they are just so similar.

If I did not own the EDP I would certainly spring for the Parfum.

Probably not a big enough point for you to consider keeping it, but considering your reviews reveal an aversion to the modern designer "imitation ambergris" vibe that has mostly consumed 2010's, this could be "the one you actually like" exception to rule which you can throw in the face of any non-fumie friends that try to club you over the head with accusations of hipsterdom.

Get rid of it. You're looking to reduce and already admit that it's really not that special.

    GET RID OF BLEU!

Moschino Pour Homme is a great choice. Recommend this one

Green Irish Tweed is a much suitable timeless scent that could easily fill the role of Bleu. ADG Profumo is better than Bleu as well.

The way I see it, you don't have any others from the Bleu dC line, and Parfum (to me at least) is arguably the best of the lot. Also Chanel seems prone to reformulations so you might want to keep your bottle of the original juice to hedge against the inevitable disappointing reformulation.

On the flip side, it's roughly the same price as Memoir and Memoir is the whip. But if you got the sort of play dough where keeping Bleu won't slow your roll, then keep it.

    1. No, never blind buy (I do, but do as I say, not as I do. I'm taking no responsibility for your fragrance gambling).
    2. Get them both. You're a Basenoter and you know you're going to end up purchasing them both eventually.
    3. Yes, it has been reformulated.
    4. Looking for a signature scent? You've come to the wrong place.

If that thought's even in your mind after just getting it: then return it and get the Amouage.

Your arguments for returning it seem to be stronger than keeping it.

If you need help being convinced to keep it, bring it back. You're very experienced in your preferences and I assume have an amazing collection even without it. I lose no sleep over omitting it from mine.

Channel Bleue is not my bag of tea at the moment. I'd probably return it fi you're having second thoughts. I did with RL Polo Red Intense the other day and returned it. Got YSL Y Prafum with no regrets.

Would still keep it, at the very least as a useful, versatile allrounder in completion of numerous other possible fragrance choices

Since you don't own any from the BdC line, I would keep it. It sounds like there's enough enjoyment there to have the occasional wear, especially when you see people talking about it.

If it wouldn't make your top 50 AND you're trying to shrink the collection, this seems like a no brainer return to me. I had a similar experience with BdC Parfum. I tried it a few times, found it fine, felt like I should buy it, but ultimately decided against it and am glad I did. I am really trying to only buy things I love from here on out, regardless of what everyone else thinks (except my wife, because if she hates then I can never wear it and it's a waste).

    Return it.

    I’d return it.
For me, it’s only good enough to get by with free Sephora samples. I’m on my 2nd one since it came out. Maybe one day I’ll pony up for a decant.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s the best BDC version so far, and the opening is divine, but it’s the basenotes that keep me from committing. Sadly, it’s built on that same generic, synthetic, obnoxious woody base that’s so prevalent nowadays and, like most modern designer scents, it completely falls apart in the basenotes.

That said, women DO love it.

Umming and urring about a fragrance isn’t usually a strong enough sign to keep it. Return it and put the money towards something you feel more drawn to

I think deep down you already know the answer, freewheelingvagabond.

My personal opinion: focus on what you really want, instead of 'sort of like' due to its perceived versatility. I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt and associated wardrobe creep with it...!

I just recieved a 50ml bottle today - blind buy. I absolutely love it - I didn’t expect to actually like it so much as I have seen it take som heat here on BN. I am now considering buying an extra bottle for backup.

Man, I gotta try this stuff. If you like it and it's not your style I think I'd probably love it. I have the EDT which is so hit or miss for me any time I wear it...most of the time 'miss.'

Anywho, I'd keep it if I were you. You don't seem to own many "safe" scents and it's good to have a few. Even something like AdG Profumo has such a recognizable, formerly ubiquitous AdG dna to it that it can rub people the wrong way (like women whose ex's wore AdG), so it's not exactly safe. And Green Irish Tweed, while fresh and upbeat, smells unusual considering today's standards/trends. So I think BdC Parfum could become your safest scent in terms of smelling appealing to a wide audience and not offending or dredging up old memories for others.

Also, it's a Chanel. It will hold it's value so there's no rush to get rid of it. If anything, you might be able to get more for it in the future as it may be an original batch or whatever (you know how these things go). It will also always be super easy to use in a trade. Furthermore, I've noticed with quality fragrances that even if I might not be crazy about them at first, I can grow to love them as I become more comfortable wearing that particular style because the quality is there and it's a good fragrance at heart. This happened to me with Pour Monsieur, which was a little too traditional for me at first, but I grew to love it. And on top of that, it may warm you up to other fragrances of a similar ilk, which is a genre you haven't delved into particularly, so it may help you out in terms of expanding your horizons and things you may want to explore that previously you did not.

Good luck on your 50 bottle mission. That's a hard number to cut down to. My absolute limit seems to be 65 and even at that I'm second guessing stuff I'm letting go. I'm shooting for 75 this year, but ultimately would like 50 as well. The frequency with which you move around though (after all, you are the free wheeling vagabond), I can't imagine how annoying it is to constantly drag your collection everywhere you go. Anyway, I'd love to see your collection when you finally hit 50. I'd be very curious to see what ultimately made the cut.

And I basically feel the same way as you about it, FWV. I enjoy smelling it - totally understand its popularity and appreciate its utility. But not enough to buy it. Like you, I have that "fresh but rich/deep" wardrobe territory covered.

Thought I'd share an update ....

I did manage to get a sample so that I could wear it. I wore it three days. Doesn't become sweet, but very muted sillage and duration. Not dynamic either.

I just returned my bottle today. Instead might get Coromandel - procured a sample to try it properly.
