    Default May 25, 2019 • Basenotes Chicago Meet-Up

Fragrance enthusiasts, in all stages of the learning process, and their family members are invited to hug and shop with folks like yourself on Saturday, May 25, 2019 (Memorial Day Weekend). Over the years, we've gathered to spend quality time together. This is not an official function of our dear Basenotes site, but a social event without fees.

When you show up to Merz Apothecary, you'll get a peel-n-stick nametag on which you can write your Basenotes and/or first name.
    APOTHECARRIED.jpg
    Chicago Meet-Up, Saturday, May 25, 2019
    Get ApotheCarried Away!
Due to the astounding variety of products available and the very warm reception being offered by Merz Apothecary, we will start our day at their Lincoln Square location 7 miles north of downtown Chicago. This means you will need to arrange transportation there first thing in the morning. Juxtapozbliss can help you choose the option that suits you best — taxi, Uber, or commuter rail. Merz opens at 9 a.m. (Contrary to prior posting here: Oromo Cafe does not open before 9 on Saturdays.)

If you do not make it to Merz, you could visit the boutiques near Oak Street and meet up with us at Barneys.

After an intensive hour+ of sniffing at Merz, we need to catch the Brown Line/Red Line to get downtown. Juxtapozbliss has generously volunteered to herd us through the process. This travel time will give your senses some time to clear before the next scent mecca, Barneys. After Barneys, we will walk to Water Tower Place's food court -- another chance to clear your head before the final sweep to Saks and (if there's time) Neiman Marcus. If we're running late, you have the option to dash in to N-M on your own. You will want to save time for sprawling out at the Drake Hotel, at the kind courtesy of Shycat. This is your opportunity to purge yourself of unwanted samples and take home ones new to you.

    9 a.m. — MERZ HQ, Lincoln Square
Walk about 2 blocks to Brown Line at Western for 10:28 or 10:35 train.
Arrive downtown, walk .3 mile (10 min) to Barneys.
Note: We will not have restroom access at Merz. So, before traveling to Barneys, if you need a restroom, plan to make a purchase at Oromo Cafe across from Merz and use their facilities. Barneys has luxurious restrooms, so you can wash your wrists and there.
    11-ish — BARNEYS
Note: Hermes has not responded. The Chicago shop has never been especially welcoming (unlike Hermes-Denver, which was extraordinarily generous, warm, and friendly to our group two years ago). Since most Hermes fragrances can be sampled at Saks, it's up to you as an individual whether you want to pop over to the Hermes across the street from Barneys within our Barneys-designated time.
Walk .5 miles (20 min) to Foodlife, Water Tower Place.
    1:30-ish — Lunch at Foodlife
Walk .3 miles (10 min) to Saks/Neiman Marcus.
    2:30-ish — SAKS, NEIMAN MARCUS
Walk .5 miles (25 min) to The Drake.
    4:00-ish — Drake Hotel

The itinerary sounds great, and I hope you all enjoy this very much! I'd want to mention a few quick points if that is okay -

    • Saks is across the street from Neiman. They would have Guerlains that might not be available elsewhere. They also carry Dior Privee (I don't think this is available at Neiman).

    • This might be of interest to the gents - Merz Apothecary is worth a visit if you are into wet shaving. There's a downtown location, but I'd suggest just take the Brown line and get off at Western. The shop is just outside the station. Lots of Trumpers, Taylor of Old Bond Street etc. Unfortunately no Czech & Speake. They also have/had Panama Boellis / Panama Daytona that I never got around to trying (some of our male European Basenoters have reviewed these positively). There's also a nice gelato place just across the street (or sort of).

    • There is a Diptyque shop at Damen (2/3 subway stops away from downtown). They should carry the boutique exclusives (Eau Lente, L'eau Trois, and also Rose de Maai, Benjoin Boheme etc.). This is a very fun neighbourhood.

    • Very close to Barneys is Velvet Taco - a great little fast food place specialising on tacos. Not authentic Mexican tacos, but sort of 'fusion' stuff but in the best possible way. Space is small (think little Manhattan joints).

    • If you like hot chocolate, try the decadent drinking chocolate at Ghirardelli (there are a couple of downtown locations); though, could be a bit too much in summer.

    • If you like smoked meats, you might want to try Green Street Smoked Meats. Great smoked pork; good selection of drinks.

    • The blues bars (BLUES, Kingston Mine and others) are on N. Halsted St. - a quick (~ 10 min) cab/subway ride from downtown.

    So exciting!

And what a plan! I love that cafe!

Are we planning to contact the shops in advance? I could contact Carlos over at Barney’s. I’m on his text message list.

There is also now a Dior boutique in Chicago near the Drake, which opened in the last two years.

Merz is outstanding! I was just at the one in Lincoln Park on Saturday and can’t recommend that site enough, though the one at the Palmer House is also great on a smaller scale.

They had selections from or the whole line of:

    4711
    Agonist
    Amouage
    Andy Tauer
    Berdoues
    Blocki
    Dame Perfumery
    Demeter
    Diptyque
    Eight & Bob
    Etat Libre d’Orange
    Grossmith
    Imaginary Authors
    Juliette Has a Gun
    Kerosene
    L’Aromatheque
    L’Artisan Parfumeur
    Maison Francis Kurkdjian
    Montale
    Nasomatto
    Outremer
    Pengaligon’s
    Santa Maria Novella
    Soap & Paper Factory

    And more

Neiman does NOT have Dior Privee, but as I said above, Chicago is now home to a Dior store which I have yet to visit and next door is Prada. Not far is also a Cartier, and I know a lot of folks have yet to sniff those exclusives. I went to Neiman last year and they had a lot of interesting stuff including Armani Privee, the full line of Acqua di Parma, the full line of Maison Francis Kurkdjian, the Van Cleef & Arpels line, the Lancome exclusives, etc. but nobody really has much Dior anymore. I was at Nordstrom in Skokie this weekend and all hey had from Guerlain was Shalimar, and all they had from Dior was Joy, Sauvage, and the full line of pink Miss Diors. Bitterly disappointing. Not even a Poison flanker to be found, except maybe Poison Girl.

Yes, the Chicago Neiman doesn't have Dior Privee (Saks Chicago does), but the one in SF carries Dior Privee (and Saks SF doesn't!).

The Nordstrom in downtown Chicago location has a much better selection IMO.

Cool news about the Dior boutique.

I will be contacting Barneys (they add staff to deal with our numbers) and Hermes (because the Chicago Hermes people get real twitchy when a lot of people mull around their expensive wares; the Denver Hermes was far more inviting and really generous with free gifts) and Foodlife (so we get a private dining space, otherwise we'd be dispersed all over for seating). I've found that the other stores sort of don't care that much when I contact them in advance, and it becomes harder to tell them exactly when to expect us).

I think you'd get a lot more out of Merz's headquarters in Lincoln Square. The downtown location adjoining the Palmer House is sort of small and doesn't carry as many products.

Does the Dior Boutique carry the Privee line? I recalled when the Dior boutique relocated in SF two years ago, they didn't carry it. They also didn't carry some of the designers like DHI and DHP.

Are there any mom/pop stores that carry vintage frags? SF used to have one called Jacquelines Perfumery right next to Neimans but that closed down a few years ago.

One my local Neimans carries a small selection of Roja Dove. Not sure if the one (or Saks) in Chicago carries it.

I'd be interested to know if Neimans in Chicago might have some discontinued Creed tester bottles tucked away behind the counters. I ask because SF had a bunch of them.

You'd probably have to call the individual stores or use their online "check store availability" function by location to learn for sure.

I haven't heard of any Chicago vintage-type shops. I think Boston's Colonial Drug and Portland's The Perfume House are the places to visit for rare treats.

    1) There’s also Merchant & Rhoades in the same building as Bloomingdales. It’s quite small (way smaller than the Loop Merz) and tucked away, but they have lines I haven’t seen anywhere else in Chicago, like Bruno Fazzolari and the more masculine Profumum Romas. It’s a fancy barbershop/spa, so you’ll also find high end shaving supplies. I’ve always found the staff to be very friendly there.

    2) A couple of floors down from M&R is J. Toor. They have beautiful men’s clothing/shoes and selections from several fragrance lines (Xerjoff, Parfums de Marly, Jeroboam, Rance, and maybe 1-2 others).

Also, for suburban locals, there’s a lovely Guerlain sales associate at Neiman’s Northbrook. I can’t recall her name at the moment, but I’ll dig it up if anyone is interested. Last time I visited, she had testers for Guerlain’s harder to find lines and was also very generous with samples (I did make a purchase).

I hope you folks can make time for any of the smaller boutiques that interest you. Our last Chicago gang walked past the Cartier and Prada shops because there wasn't enough new product diversity to be of interest to everybody in the group, plus the smaller shops don't deal well with our numbers. Trust me, you will reach olfactory fatigue soon enough, and there are only so many hours in a day. I aim to wrap things up by dinnertime so everyone can be on their way.

If some of you want to make dinner plans with each other, please have fun with that.

Well, I live here in the Chicago area so obviously I could go to Merz on my own, but my wish would be to find some folks who might want to go together. So I was asking if we could add an optional time for people to make the trip there? If there is no interest other than me, than I will drop it, but if others are interested then at least we'll know when that chance would be to go as a sub-group. I don't know any other fragrance aficionados and even though I live here, my opportunities to shop like this are pretty rare. Are you saying it would not be appropriate to add an "Optional Niche shopping side-trip" slot to the schedule? I would be happy to cover the transportation service to Merz in Lincoln Park and back. Roughly 20 minute trip. Very easy to get a cab from Foodlife and simple to call an Uber back. For example, such a trip could slot in right here:

1:30 — Lunch at FOODLIFE (Fuel up! You're running a marathon.)
2:20 — OPTIONAL NICHE SIDE TRIP TO MERZ APOTHECARY, SPONSORED BY DAVID (let's leave Foodlife a few minutes early to account for some extra transport time)
2:30 — NEIMAN MARCUS (for any who don't go to Merz)
3:30 — (Both groups) Head to Shycat’s room at the DRAKE HOTEL (140 E. Walton Place)

Perhaps I'm the only one who would be interested in the smaller niche venue over Neiman, and if that's the case then I will let it go, but it seems nice to offer the option.

Do you know if this sales associate still has testers of some of the discontinued Guerlains?

If you want to coordinate the arrangements, go ahead. Our whole group traveled by bus last time and some of the ladies were more than ready to sit down. Perhaps, with a large male contingent this time, there'll be greater interest in Merz.

Okay, sounds good! If it falls through, it falls through.

If anyone is interested in a trip up to Merz Apothecary, I'd be happy to cover transportation there and back. My thought is the slot right after lunch as I outlined above (instead of going to Neimans) would be the easiest time to go, and we could be back to meet everyone at Shycat's hotel.

Anyone who is interested, please PM me. I will repost this request also when we get closer to the date.

Here's a link to the website so you can check out the store, which was founded in 1875. https://www.merzapothecary.com/

It focuses on more niche brands with a lot of skin care and fragrances, including this list: https://www.merzapothecary.com/brands/

Jux, those pix are from the former location. The new location by the Palmer House is different.

    Yes, I agree.

On the last meetup in NYC I swear I almost got nose fatigue after Saks. I really didn't know if I was going to be able to smell at Twisted Lily. Thank God I could...lol. But I couldn't smell as much as I wanted to.

I don’t, I’m sorry. Her name is Anna Reyderman and the main number is 847-564-0300. Hope she can help you out!
